Finally we can move onto this game after both schools cruised to easy victories this past week.
I know Lufkin will give The Highlanders alot of trouble with there speed. The Highlander offensive line should provide more then enough trouble wfor Lufkin. Both teams will have strengths and weaknesses.
X-Factors
Lufkin
QB Deauntre Smiley
DB Carrington Byndom (Texas Commit)
WR Quinn Trimble
The Woodlands
RB Daniel Lasco
OL Chad Lindsey

With all due respect, the Woodz coaches got to be a tad uptight eating dinner tonight.

Well after seeing what lufkin did with common opponent College Park I think Woodlands may have their hands full with this one...thats some offensive show Lufkin put on

Common opponent factor may not apply here. Woodz defense will be infinitely better than CP's so I don't see Smiley having his way with them like he did with us today. Woodz are very big and very fast compared to CP. Plus there's about 50 more of them.
Offensively, Lindsey and Sibal, not to mention Lasco may give Lufkin problems. And if Conroe can throw it on Lufkin, you know that Knust, Wilcher and co. can too.
HFA may help Lufkin here but I might go with The Woodz in this one.

dont think you want to talk common opponets -- it dont mean squat -- LP beat Conroe by what 7 ?? -- TWH beat Conroe by 34 --so C. O. comparison is meaningless

If you use Conroe as a common opponent, then The Woodlands looks like the better team. Using common opponents isn't always a good factor to use. Regardless, this should be one heck of a game between two quality opponents.

The Woodz won't show him anything he haven't already seen before. JT and Longview defenses are just as fast and maybe even better Imo.
But I think the Pack will win again in a close one against the Woodz..
If it wasnt at abe i would be alot more worried about this game. Being at abe, im worried but expect the pack to pull it out in front of a full house. (though not as full as the longview game)

You cannot use the College Park game as comparison. When TW played CP, it was raining. When LP played CP today it was sunny and 75 degrees. Big difference.
I saw both teams play this weekend. If TW are to beat LP, they have to control Smiley. If you control Smiley and the short passes they made today, TW will win the game Friday. In saying that, controlling Smiley will be a big chore.
LP defensive line and linebackers will not hold up to the pounding Chad Lindsay, Ryan Burnett and Adam Sibal will bring this week. I think Outlaw will put seven or eight in the box to stop TW run game. If LP do that and TW coaches call dumps and passes across the middle, Outlaw will have to back his linebackers up. That will open up TW run game. I think this game will come down to LP playing a perfect game to beat TW. TW has too many weapons this year and for the first time in many years, TW will line up an offensive line that is much more dominant that the LP defensive line.
It should be a great game and the team with the fewest turnovers will win this game. Good luck to both teams.

Doesn't matter if you suit up 100 per game, you can only play 11 at a time. Lufkin has plenty of depth on both sides of the ball. The Lufkin D line has already played against some very physical O lines in Longview and John Tyler so that won't be anything new. THW and CP played on wet artificial field and your making excuses. Lufkin played the same night down in New Caney in a mud hole and won 47-6, so by your terms it would have been more on a dry field. This will be a very good game between two good teams, a championship calibur game with a playoff atmosphere. Lufkin wins 28-24 at Abe.

They had alot of weapons in the loss last year and other then Katy the Woodlands O-line haven't played anybody to call them much more dominant than the Pack D-line and Linebackers...

Don't throw New Caney into the mix. Poor guys. That's like saying, "I raced my car against a bicycle and won." Besides, Lufkin scored 61 on them on a dry field last year so technically, yeah, you probably would have scored more.

Depth and numbers do matter particularly if you have injuries. It's not a factor in the Lufkin Woodz game as both have depth. It does matter to teams like College Park who only have something like 40 guys, if that. All I'm saying is it won't be a factor at Abe next week like it was at Woodforest yesterday. If we're not able to suit up players like Hilton, Cook, Gerard, Clark etc, we don't have a whole lot we can pick from to fill in. When Cole Jordan went down earlier this year, Woodz did not skip a beat. Their JV-2 qb could have filled in, they're that deep in that position.

I agree that comparison games don't mean much and equally as insignificant are rankings. TWHS was hyping this crap last year with a team that was supposed to be better than this years Highlander version and playing at home...oh I forgot that homecoming was a major distraction;) and the LP team was way down by normal standards with multiple losses and very inconsistent on both sides of the ball. Somehow still got the job done.
You can talk and wish all you want but THWS will not push LP around on any front and TWHS better bring their "A" game to have a chance against the Pack in Abe.
It should be a very good game and I don't think a blowout by either team. Respectfully TWHS has a solid program, but both teams will have to play well to win.
I really don't think Outlaw will need to call TWHS to consult on how to beat the Highlanders, appreciate the help but he's done a pretty good job of that without all of the help;)
I just don't know if our slow, pint-sized team can compete with such overwhelming odds against us....Don't let your fan arrogance cloud reality.

I have a feeling this game is going to be on the pick'em. Probably the most exciting game in Texas next weekend.
If it's on the pick'em, I'll take Lufkin just because they are at home. To me it's really too close to call. TWHS is ranked higher than Lufkin, but I believe Lufkin should be ranked higher than Katy.
I'll go Lufkin +2 at home. A virtual push. Best I can do.

This TWHS team has exceeded my expectations but beating Lufkin up there is a tall order. Throw all the transitive game comparisons in the trash and go play this game. I don't think either team is going to intimidate the other with talk of speed and strength, both have competed well with the best in Texas.

College Park was able to rack up alot of yards rushing because they run such a great veer and ill admit they ran it alot better then I thought. It is hardd to play down hill against an option team because your LB's just cant blow the FB up because if the QB pulls it he is going to have nice yardage.
Now I do think TWHS will have the best O-Line we have seen but since they wont be running the option dont expect to push the Lufkin D-Line around they are alot better then people think alot better. Not to mention James Duriden at LB will be there waiting for Lasco ;).
This game will come down if TWHS can contain the Lufkin speed because on fridaynight TWHS will play at team with more speed and more athletes that are coached by one of the best.
Anyone here seen both Longview and the Woodlands this year? Just curious how there running games stack up against each other this year.

Remember he's the same one that said this...
I would not count out the Cavaliers on this game. CP has some talent, granted not the speed of Lufkin, but CP will hold their own. Lufkin is playing by the seat of their pants with the QB being the playmaker. I predict an upset this week with CP winning 28-24.
I really would like to see a Lufkin win this week so that TWHS Lufkin game would bring more excitement, but Lufkin will overlook CP for TW game and thus there is the upset in the making.

Lets dont start patting ourselves on the back just yet my fellow Lufkin fans. Lufkin came out and played well and took a big step in the right direction Offensively, but the Woodz is no CP, and will be a much bigger challenge. They will be the most ballanced team we have seen this year, and will come into Abe motivated to beat us in our house.
We have been to inconsistence over the last couple of years for me to feel comfortable knowing which LP team will show up. So I will just sit back and enjoy the inticipation of gameday.

Don't think of it as patting ourselves on the back, but not going to sit here and let some say how they are just going to manhandle the Pack. Never seen it happen even when the most inconsistent and will not on Friday night.
Now if you want to talk about a couple of very proud and talented teams going to war I am all about that. I do believe it will be a hard fought and closely contested game, just don't come on here talking a bunch of nonsense about being a superior to a team you have not beat. Don't care what your ranking is.
Both teams have playmakers and both have advantages and disadvantages.
I sat back Saturday and watched a Jr. QB who has been trying to learn the dual threat of the spread and run it to perfection. 19-19 passing is just sick and as equally impressed with the fact that not a receiver had a drop nor was a defender even close to an int. Not saying he will have the type of game every week, but he did show what he and this offense is capable of. That performance is worthy of recognition and not easily duplicated.
An exciting game and good for Texas HS football. Abe should be rocking!!!

This is a toss up, but I give Lufkin the edge defensively and also for home field. I will be interested to see which Lufkin offense shows up this week. Check that, I will be interested to see if either offense shows up this week. However, something tells me there will be more scoring than last year.

Since I can't find your stats anywhere, I have no way of knowing how you compare to TW's 1422 rushing yards. Unless you're well over 2000 rushing yards, you might want to reconsider stating Cujo is far better than TW. If they're over 2000...:notworthy

Excited about this one, great district showdown between two of the top teams in the state. I'm making the drive from SA for this one, first (and probably only) game I'll catch this season. From what it sounds like, Smiley had a breakout game last week. Hopefully last weeks game against college park is a indicator of how the pack will play the rest of the season.

as of game 6 --district stats are :
TWH ------ 1276 Rushing ----- 1153 Passing
LUFKIN ---- 1300 Rushing ----- 810 Passing
dont have Lufkin stats -- but TWH had 411 Rushing & 484 combined against Oak Ridge and Conroe -- that gives them 1687 Rushing and 1637 Passing thru game 8
Cant find stats for Lufkin - New Caney but for Lufkin - College Park -- LP had 188 Rush and 224 Passing -- giving them 1488 Rushing and -- 1034 Passing -- so Lufkin would have to had over 300 yds Rushing against New Caney ( possible ) and 0ver 700 passing ( not likely ) to have 100 yds more than TWH in each category
I wouldnt consider 100 yds more after 8 games being significently better. Anyway -- stats dont really mean anything --so we will see Friday night. The stat that I always look at is when rushing and passing are approx the same -- to me that means a team can go either way if the run or pass is not working in a game
To be honest : I got the stat info from the TWH website & The Conroe Courier archives -- so take them for what they are worth

Think you can throw out the stats and past game comparisons, fun to look at but not meaningful in this game.
Both coaching staffs know enough about each other to know what they are up against. Both teams defensive coaches are going to have a tough time sleeping this week as they have numerous offensive playmakers to defend against.
Could be a cold rain on Friday. Expected 40% chance and temp in the 60's.

Both qb's will have to hit their receivers on the quick out. Both defenses are very aggressive and the qb's will have very little or no time to survey the field. Woodz will have to be very patient and take those little out routes for 5-7 yards. This will loosen things up a bit for Lasco. LP nneds to do the same to create some openings for Bush. It's going to be a chess game between the coaches. Should be a lot of fun.

Should be a great game that likely carries zero PO implications. Barring something bizarre in the final district week, both will be No. 1 seeds from District 14-5a.
I'm still not convinced the Woodlands can ride a bus 2 hours, and play a great game in a hostile environment. There's always a first for it, however, and this group is very talented.
I don't expected Smiley to go 19-19, but if the offense plays equally as good as they did last week, Lufkin should win.
I also wonder if there is not going to be some kind of holdover from last year. Lufkin's win last year was stunning - most local folks were picking the Woodlands to win - and some thought it would be ugly. Not sure if that provides more motivation or more anxiety for the Highlanders.

That is true. The ORHS - CP game is the key district game. Key for ORHS. Loss means they're out. Even if something strange happens next week, LP and Woodz already have the 1 seed wrapped up.

The Team is pumped, the Students are pumped, everybody is excited for the game, anybody you talk to at school, says that they are ready and want to go to Luffy and show off their Highlander pride.
This team plays with heart and compassion to win. They don't play to run up the score or to degrade the other team, all they want to do is go out there and have fun, and in order to have fun in their minds, is to win.
Good luck Lufkin, and be ready for an emotional crowd from South County, they are ready, hopefully you are too.

Word from The Woodlands High School:
The Team is pumped, the Students are pumped, everybody is excited for the game, anybody you talk to at school, says that they are ready and want to go to Luffy and show off their Highlander pride.
This team plays with heart and compassion to win. They don't play to run up the score or to degrade the other team, all they want to do is go out there and have fun, and in order to have fun in their minds, is to win.
Good luck Lufkin, and be ready for an emotional crowd from South County, they are ready, hopefully you are too.
For some reason I don't find being called Luffy as funny. Lufkin is more than ready for you skirt wearing Scotts.:D Our fans on the visitor side will also have a nice little token of our appreciation ready for you Highlander faithful when you arrive. Please have a safe 2 hour plus drive over to LUFKIN on Friday night.

where's the poll guys? Lots of folks interested in this game, need a poll to see what folks think IMO.
I'm leaning toward Lufkin for two reasons, one trivial one not so trivial. The non-trivial one is it is at home for Lufkin. The trivial one is TWHS really disappointed me last year because I thought they would get to state. So I feel a bit 'show me' about them. This is a 'show me' game.

I don't neither. I think the Woodz will get the same love the Lobos got on the visitor side this coming friday.

I'm with you on this one. I've pretty much kept my mouth shut about this game until I see what happens. I like what TW has done this year...and they look really good...but LP doesn't look like a cakewalk, either.

KEYS FOR BOTH TEAMS..
Lufkin- Come out with energy, play hard, play well. YOUR AT HOME :). keep lasco from busting out the long ones and keep pressure that QB!!!
Woods- Lufkin couldnt stop CP's Running game half the time so we were able to march down the field. (tell we hit red zone) give lasco the ball like you always do and let him work.
take crowd out of it fast and score fast and early.
Watch out for QB he will run it him self and will bust though holes if he see's one. Keep that back field ready for the Pass, or its going to be over your heads and in a players hands in EZ..
Im picking lufkin at home. LP is alot better than i thought and they have speed and talent, LP 32-Woods 24

I hope you mean "passion" to win because I'm not getting the feeling that TW's "compassion" is going to be reciprocated Friday night. :D

My sentiments exactly. This is a big game for both teams but IMO maybe a bit bigger for the Woodz. If Woodz wins in Abe it may be the confidence booster the Highlanders need to propel them to a State appearence or even a Title. Lufkin is well, Lufkin at Abe. It's almost an exercise in futility beating the Panthers at home. This should be one of the games of the week or THE game of the week. I bet it won't be televised. :(
Usually big games by teams with good defenses become low scoring, defensive battles. Maybe that's why everyone is calling this game close. I would say Lufkin by 7 due to the friendly confines of Abe or if the Woodz finally brings it then a 3 to 4 point victory by them.
Now watch them boys make a fool of me and 60 points get scored by the end of the evening!!

I gotta go with Lufkin on this game...
After the Katy/Woodlands game some were saying that Woodlands just has Katy's number...I don't know if that is true or not but I think if that applies, then Lufkin has Woodlands number...
Lufkin plays them tough and has a certain confidence they can beat Woodlands anytime they play...
Besides, I just want to see the Woodlands get beat...:D

While in the Woodlands area visiting a new granddaughter(the first) I was able to attend the TWHS vs Conroe game. I enjoyed myself alot and had many conversations with some great Highlander fans. They were really interested about the Pack and what I thought about their team. So here goes.
After watching both teams against a common opponet(Conroe), both teams will have their hands full. When you say Highlanders, you have to say Big! That O-line is Baddddddd! Well coached and good. If Lasco shakes free no one on Lufkin will catch him without an angle. But that goes for every other team they play.
(Speed Kills) when refering to the Pack. On Both sides of the ball they are cat quick. Lufkin still gets beat on mis-direction plays because they pursue so hard and fast to the play. If Smilley can be close to what he was against CP Saturday It will help the Pack running game that some times goes more sideways than upfield.
No prediction on this one other than the game might be determined by turnovers. TWHS had 3 or 4 Saturday and that will be to many this Friday
and still win I think. Lufkin is not immune to the TO bug either.
No matter who wins both teams are class acts. Because both teams will be D1 and D2, nothing would be better than 2 state titles.
Have a safe trip to Lufkin and we will see you Friday.

Packtracks,
Which Highlanders players really stuck out for you when you watched them last week?
Packtracks
10-28-2009, 05:23 PM
I could always name the ones that we already know, Lasco and such but others that stood out were #89. (I'm bad with numbers) I think. He played defensive end and was in on 1/2 the plays. He has a motor that don't stop. Also the nose guard. He is short but they did not move him. Kind of made it hard to run inside. The WR's were not real fast but ran great routes and were on the same page as the QB which negates the speed factor somewhat.
I must say again that the O-Line was big and good and that they are a handfull for even the best teams.

Oh, that's nothing different than every other time I've travelled to Abe and sat on the visitor's side. The Lufkin crowd has always been very welcoming. Your comment made it sound like we had something to fear this year...other than the action on the field.

Will The Woodz fans travel for this one i.e., will they sell out the alloted visitors tickets before game time?

Def feeling LP in this one.
When we went up there and beat them it bout took a miracle to get out of there with a win.
I also had the pleasure of sitting right across the stairway from the LP fans on the visitor side :D:D Good times. They are def loud and in your face, luckly we are too. I do have to admit it was pretty nice to shut them down though.
I don't see TWHS fans getting as into it though, penny loafers and having sweaters tied around their necks while sipping on ice'd teas doesn't really scream rabid fan base to me. ;)
GL luck to both schools, hopefully the rain is passed and everyone avoids serious injury.

Shows how little you know about TWHS. You sound like those people from up north who think all Texans own an oil well and still ride horses to work. Woodlanders are regular folks and some just have above-average incomes.
