Lufkin continues to produce college talent

By JEFF AWTREY

Thursday, February 02, 2006

Wednesday was business-as-usual for the Lufkin Panthers football program on national signing day when eight seniors signed letters of intent to play in the college ranks.

Lufkin's ability to produce college athletes ranks as high as any other high-school program in the state, if not the nation. According to Lufkin Head Coach John Outlaw, 45 former Panthers suited up for college teams last year and he has no problem talking college recruiters into checking out his players.

"There's not much of a problem with success in our process," he said. "Anytime you have a successful program, those guys will just show up."

The past speaks for itself. Former Panthers like Reggie McNeal, Jorvorskie Lane and McKinner Dixon are just a sampling of the college athletes the Lufkin program has produced.

This year's squad featured three players who have come across the national recruiting radar: Leonard Hewitt, Mandela Roberts and E.J. Shankle. All three are listed on Rivals.com's search database.

Rivals is the "bible" for college football fans wanting the inside scoop on how their favorite school is doing on the recruiting trail. Members can pay a subscription to see articles about the top recruits and what schools are offering them scholarships, what schools they are interested in, how visits to the schools went, etc.

Rivals has over 140,000 paying subscribers, according to Bob Burton, Jr., general manager and executive vice president of Rivals.com. Burton says East Texas never comes up short in providing football talent.

"Year-in, year-out East Texas has special years and this year is no different," he said.

Hewitt is listed as a four-star (out of a possible five stars) recruit and signed to play for Texas Tech, while Roberts, a two-star recruit, signed to play for Indiana and Shankle, a three-star recruit, signed with Texas A&M.

While those three prospects have attracted the most attention, Lufkin has many others who will be moving to the next level, whether it is a non-BCS conference school, a lower division school or even a community college.

Jamie Harris signed with SFA, Eric Taylor and Roger Hurts signed with Kilgore College, Robert Taylor signed with Navarro College, and Clifton Kibble signed with East Texas Baptist University.

Lufkin will likely have at least a few more players sign to play collegiate ball in the upcoming weeks.

According to Outlaw, any senior who wants to play in college can do so.

"When we finish the season, I ask kids that aren't getting recruited if they still want to play and we find them a place to play," Outlaw said.

They have had 8 and only 3 signed div1a so far. That is a down year for Lufkin but still very solid. Lufkin has had 14 div1a players in the last 3 years which is top 10 in the nation.

Just for you farmer because i knew you were wanting an update! ;)

That is impressive. Lufkin had that same number in 2003 and 7 signed div1a scholarships that year. That is Lufkin's best year. Last year they signed 11 and 4 were div1a. This year "so far" there will be more to sign. 8 and 3 were div1a Here is another article on how many they had in Outlaw's 11 year's. 115 in 11 years

Eight Panthers sign letters of intent

While the Lufkin Panthers had a fairly youthful team this year, the seniors were still a major reason they advanced all the way to the state semifinals for the fourth time in five years.

Collegiate coaches must have taken notice of that talent as eight Lufkin players signed letters of intent on National Signing Day at Lufkin High School Wednesday morning.

Three players signed Division 1-A scholarships, one signed with Division 1-AA SFA, another signed with Division III East Texas Baptist University and three more inked with junior colleges.

The eight signings on Wednesday brought Lufkin's total to 115 players that have signed in Outlaw's 11 years at the school. The Panthers are likely to have a few more signings in the upcoming months.

"We're always proud of the kids for being able to do this, but we do have some mixed emotions," Outlaw said. "We're proud to see them get this opportunity, but we're sad to have to say goodbye to them."

The Panthers will continue to have an impact in the Big 12 as E.J. Shankle signed with Texas A&M and Leonard Hewitt signed with Texas Tech.

Mandela Roberts will be taking his talents out of the state after signing with Indiana.

Meanwhile, his teammate on the defensive side of the ball, Jamie Harris, elected to stay close to home by signing with SFA.

Eric Taylor and Roger Hurts will still be teammates as they both signed with Kilgore College while Robert Taylor signed with Navarro.

Running back Clifton Kibble signed to play for East Texas Baptist University next year.

"It's really a credit to the whole school," Outlaw said. "People aren't going to give away scholarships unless they think the guys have a chance to be successful. So that speaks highly of the faculty here that they're equipping the students to be successful."

Shankle was a dual threat for Lufkin over the past three years. As a senior, he ran for 319 yards and seven touchdowns on 42 carries and caught 30 passes for 348 yards and four touchdowns.

He will be joining former teammates Alton Dixon and Jorvorskie Lane with the Aggies.

"It was important that those guys were there because I think I'll need some support as a freshman and those guys can give it to me," Shankle said. "It's exciting to be playing for a school like A&M."

Hewitt will also be joining a pair of former teammates, McKinner Dixon and Rashad Hunt. Dixon was on the Freshmen All-America team this year.

Hewitt could possibly be starting as early as next year.

"I think it's pretty likely that I'll come in and be starting next year," Hewitt said. "Everybody knows about Texas Tech's offense. But I want to step in there and help the defense get to the next level to get that national championship ring."

Hewitt was an all-state selection as selected by the Texas Sports Writers Association. This season he had eight interceptions after recording 11 as a junior.

While Hewitt and Shankle will be playing in the Big 12, Roberts will take his talent to the Big 10 to play for the Indiana Hoosiers.

He was excited about playing at a Big 10 school as well as getting the education that goes along with it.

"This is the end of something great but the beginning of something even better," Roberts said. "I'm really excited about getting to play at a school like that.

"One of the main reasons I'm going there though is they've got a great business school. I'm not going to be playing football for the rest of my life, so I've got to get ready for life after football."

Roberts finished his Lufkin career as the all-time leading tackler with 258. That included 128 tackles this season.

Harris will also be joining some old teammates after signing with SFA. Roy Gardner and Zeke Fancher, both receivers, signed with the Lumberjacks last season.

He will be hoping to lead a turnaround for SFA, which had its struggles this season.

"It's a great opportunity to play for Coach Mac," Harris said, referring to SFA Head Coach Robert McFarland. "Their coaching staff's a lot like the one we have here in Lufkin so I should be able to make that transition.

"I know the type of attitude I can bring to the team, so this is a really exciting day for me."

Eric Taylor and Roger Hurts will get to team up on the same side of the ball next year as they signed with Kilgore.

This season, Taylor was third on the team with 83 tackles, while Hurts had 37 tackles while also clogging up the middle.

Robert Taylor will be playing for Kilgore's conference rival, Navarro. As a senior, Taylor finished with 52 tackles, 11 of those going for losses, and six sacks. He should be able to provide a pass rushing force for Navarro.

Kibble should also be able to make an impact after signing with East Texas Baptist University. Last season he finished with 811 yards and 12 touchdowns on 146 carries.

"I'm just going to go in there and do what I can to help the team out," Kibble said. "I know it'll be a challenge, but I think I'll be ready for it."

MY GOODNESS 10 div1a signee's!! That is the most div1a's i have seen since Lamarque a few years back. SLC usually only has a couple of div1a's a year before this one right? They are finally getting the recognition they deserve in terms of college recruiting.

I guess it all balances out.

I'm glad to see that SFA is finally devoting some recruiting effort in Lufkin. I've never been able to understand how they could be right next door to one of the best programs in the state and never sign any players.

That is impressive to say the least, but from looking at the size of a couple of them the education most likely will benefit them more, as they won,t go much farther than college.

what is that supposed to mean? You cannot discount signing with a division 1 school.
