How do they come up with .5 kids? I noticed that on the UIL page on enrollment. One even has .84 of a kid.

Absent kids count for .5 I believe. At least that's what I was told in the past.

Not idea where you get .84 though.

Well you did say you. Sorry I misunderstood. On the 4-A enrollment numbers they have a school .61 and one with .48. I am sure they have some strange formula to come up with that.

I could be missing something here. But if Longview has 2086.5kids then they should be in 5A. Because the 5A numbers say 2085 and up. Last time I checked, 2086.5 is greater than 2085. I could be missing something here though.

You are. The alignment numbers are taken every 2 years. So 2 years ago Longviews numbers (2005) had them below the cutoff line, thus 4A. They are now reporting numbers (2086.5) that have them 1.5 above the LAST 5A cutoff line. Now, that cutoff number may rise, as it has for awile every realignment, so if it does, then Longview is still below the 5A cutoff and will remain a 4A school.

As usual. words of truth. I'm afraid John Tyler is headed for 4A, probably 14-4A. That should make many 4A schools cringe.

the feeder schools sometimes are split unevenly between sr his, so the numbers are multiplied thusly, making for partial students.

does the UIL really need to change the numbers up that often?

That aside, wouldnt it make for an interesting situation with Longview and JohnTyler in 4A over there? That would be wild.

Yes, they realign every two years. Last Thursday was "Snapshot Day" - the day schools look at their enrollment and sed it in to the UIL.

Half kids are kids who spend half their day on one campus and half on anther. Happens in Mansfield all the time - there's one Latin teacher in the ISD, so if you want Latin, you have to drive over to the campus where she is.

Other fractions come from ISD's that don't have a clear feeder system - if a 10-12 school does not have a clear feeder school (Permian is a good example - their 9th graders are spread between two 9th grade schools), they just multiply the 10-12 population by 1.33 to "normalize" the school population to a 9-12 basis.

5A is all based on the enrollment of the top 285 (believe that's right, could be off on that number) school in the state of Texas. So yep. They do need to change that much.

Longview, Marshall, Texas High, Pine Tree, John Tyler, Nacogdoches, Hallsville, Mount Pleasant, Sulphur Springs, Whitehouse, and Jacksonville are the schools in East Texas that look to be in 4A next year.
Kilgore, Henderson, and Lindale will probably head to 3A.

I thought that they took the average daily attendance for one specific week and that is were the percent came from on some of the school's reported #.

Interesting number there with Steele.

Here's an even more interesting one!!! I've heard, I repeat heard and don't know it for a fact that Smithson Valley turned in 2,038!!!!!!

Sorry, but we are doing work on that campus right now and if that is truly the number they turned in they were missing about 1/4 of their students that day! If that is right, then they need to turn off power to about 1/2 that campus because it looks like a friggin university on that hill side!!!!

I know this is the UIL and this is probably a very, very stupid question but why would they take the attendance for this very important happening every two years??? Why would they simply not use the ENROLLMENT number.......an honest to goodness true number of how many students go to each school!!!!!!!!!!

I think they do use the number of students enrolled that day.. not the number of students in attendance. Because then you would be penalizing the schools that have high attendance percentages.

Per a very thorough analysis on another site, the cuts are expected to be:

5A - 2053 and up
4A - 1015 - 2052
3A - 461 - 1014

That can change based on who is granted exemptions to play up, etc. But the assumption (according to sources in the UIL, exemptions will ONLY be granted for true 8 team districts and REAL extreme travel.

Up from 5A to 4A

Saginaw
Denton Guyer
Mansfield Timberview
Mansfield Legacy
Midlothian
Longview
Dallas Samuell

Dropping from 5A to 4A
John Tyler
Mansfield Summit
Smithson Valley
