Today is the day! This is the day that attendance offices throughout Texas will record enrollment, normalized the population according to the forms, and send it to the UIL! These are the numbers that will be used for the 2010-2012 alignment.
If you have access to those numbers, make sure and post them because we'll ALL be wondering what they were come January!

I've found about a dozen or so on The Old Coach, I bet they start trickling in slowly but surely

Westfield looks to be around 2550-2560. Ceteris paribus, that means Westfield would go from being the biggest school in their UIL district to the smallest. Proof positive that the way they do ADA when a new school (like Dekaney) opens skews the numbers.

What is the cutoff for 5a this year? Cause I think Cove is headed back down the 4a.

Numbers that could affect Region I alignment:
Amarillo 2089
Amarillo Tascosa 2140.5
Mansfield 2391
Figure the Sandies are moving down (probably).

Dude....That is a MAJOR blow. That is bigger then i realized. Going from a school with close to 4300 kids to a school with a little less then 2600...wow... They pulled an Humble-Atascocita on yall.
I would also guess that Westfield will be split again when HS #4 opens up. Spring will eventually take a HUGE hit when # 5 opens up.

last i checked Humble was at 2080 kids. We will be 5a, and we need to be. We need to re identify ourselves as a community and a program.
A 4a school with 5a facilities and budget we should be able to build ourselves up again. Then again....We may have a redrawing by the end of this year that may push us up back again.
either way, im fine with it.

Which makes re-alignment interesting... What will happen to Memorial, Strake Jesuit, and the 3 Alief schools? 5 team district (probably not)? Split up? Joined with some teams from some other district - who could possibly be added to the district thats on the west side of Houston?
So what I think the solution will be is - Memorial and Strake Jesuit join HISD and the Katy schools re-accept the Alief schools... or vice-versa...

only for multi- school districts that have enough schools to form their own UIL district ( at least 6 ) --or for extreme travel problems -- but from what I understand travel would be easier they were 4A

What is the cutoff for 5a this year? Cause I think Cove is headed back down the 4a.
there is no number that the UIL sets in advance -- doesnt work that way --in a nutshell --the simplified process is as follows :
In a perfect world 5A would have 32 districts of 8 schools ( that works out to 8 districts in each region ) for playoff reasons --that is 32 x 8 = 256 schools -- UIL starts in El Paso ( 1 - 5A ) assigning 8 teams --then work their way east then south , etc --then they start looking at multiple school ISD's , travel , schools that fit parameters for appealing to play -up , then try to fit a little bit of reason into the process , creating some 6 , 7 , 8, 9 , or 10 team districts to allow for the situations that exist and make things fit ---usually winding up with a little less than 256 --- then the smallest school that winds up as 5A is the cut-off for 4A -- no perceived magic number . The number is in effect created by the number of large schools
then they do the same with 4A -then 3A and so forth

so if JT is still one of the 256 largest schools in the state, they will remain 5A?

twhfan#1

so if JT is still one of the 256 largest schools in the state, they will remain 5A?
didnt say that -- in an ideal world ( no travel concerns --every school is in a single school ISD , etc ) -- because of these concerns the number of schools in a classification will usually be LESS than 256 ( the reverse could be true also --maybe more than 256 --- but that hasnt happened )
Now -- the UIL can and usually does set a TARGET number of schools ( 245 ?? ) based on how everything fits -- but that is a target based on previous expereince ( and probably early projections )
things can throw off the ideal and the target --- for example El Paso -- in an ideal world there would be 8 EP schools that fit the 5A size -- but what if there are only 6 ? -- 7 ? --- 10 ? -- 12 ? -- right there at the beginning the 256 ideal is shot
my point is that there is NO pre-set enrollment to determine 5a / 4a cutoff ( or any classification ) -- whatever is the smallest school assigned to 5A -- that becomes the cutoff number --that is why projections on who will be 5A or not is useless ( except for the very large schools ( 2500 or larger are pretty well sure to be 5A )
Usless -- but fun for the fans to speculate

JagDad07

Indeed, 5A is anywhere from 220-245 schools - they almost always make it 245. They then take the largest 4A school, divide it's population by 2, and make that the 4A lower bound cut-off
has09
10-16-2009, 11:06 AM
usually lots more wiggle room in 4A though as they can gerrymander the # to make certian districts fit better, etc. No minimum or max # for 4A and below.

http://www.uil.utexas.edu/policy/pdf/08realign_procedures.pdf
I have no idea how many schools have historically ended up in 5a; but, a careful reading of the UIL procedures makes it clear that they have no set minimum or maximum number of schools. The key word is "should".
"should consist of a minimum of 220 schools and a maximum of 245 schools"
They obviously gave themselves wiggle room for the unexpected. IMO, a lawyer probably looked it over to make sure they weren't locked in with specific numbers.
JagDad07

And it's been 245 pretty much every year since 1980 - perhaps every single year - I'm too lazy to go back and check. Hence - YES there is a min and max as defined by the procedures.
www.theoldcoach.com has a log of numbers - I'll try to pull those together.

Abilene High has gained a few students since but they are only sitting around 2300 i think but Abilene Cooper is sitting right there around 2300 as well so it could mean the old 3-5a maybe getting back together and Cooper coming back up to 5a or abilene high maybe dropping to 4a depending on where the cutoff is this year.

Burleson has 2600, but with our new high school opening next year with approximately 900 students being transferred, it is questionable that they will still be in 5A, but I see Burleson playing in 4A in the coming years, and Burleson Oak Valley playing in 3A to start off their program

I have to agree with skeptic. You can point to the past for evidence that 245 is a maximum, but the UIL drafted this language for flexibility. 245 is not a hard and fast maximum, it is asperational though accurate historically.

just saw Burleson's # was 2058 apparently they are allowed to take out students who are allowed to transfer...not fair IMO this means they'll be able to play 4A w/5A's next year if that # is correct

Joined with some teams from some other district - who could possibly be added to the district thats on the west side of Houston?
So what I think the solution will be is - Memorial and Strake Jesuit join HISD and the Katy schools re-accept the Alief schools... or vice-versa...
wow - that's going to be interesting. Hate to see that happen though to the old neighborhood - guess people just aren't moving away. That's the reason SB closed back in 1985 - they were already feeling it in the demographics even then. I know my mom's been there for 50 years and she's going nowhere. I wonder if they've considered closing NB at all and spreading the students around. My old neighborhod is (GASP) Memorial now:eek: Gee, they didn't hesitate to close the flagship school. Should have been NB to begin with.

I don't think this will be an issue in Cy Fair - I think the lowest is around 3200 - most are near 4000:eek:. I can't think of any in the 2000's (outside of the brand new schools which don't have a Senior class) but I guess we will find out soon.

Cedar Park is <2000. Those are old numbers you have for 16-5A teams.
