View Full Version : 2006 Super List - Top Players
KT2000
01-30-2006, 09:23 PM
I've posted the first edition of our Super List of top players to watch for 2006. 90-95% of the players on the list right now were at least 2nd team all district or better in 2005. As you might expect, it's almost completely seniors and juniors to be on the list right now given not many freshmen (sophs to be) played varsity.
2006 Players to Watch (http://www.5atexasfootball.com/superlist.htm)
As always, keep in mind players will be added at each position as we progress through the year and get more knowledge of what everyone has for 06. These are the top returners.
You can access the List from the home page as well.
Not- List accounts for anticipated realignment changes.

Thanks! Champ did some of that also. I started gathering that information last season as underclassmen stood out, and continued through the release of all the post-season accolades. Your boys return a very nice core of experience in '06, Seguin.

Cantu is on there now. I had taken him out of the list when I changed his school from Bell to SLC and forgot to plug him back in as a Dragon.
Seguin...Katy is where I grew up, went to school and live now after college; so I'll always be a Tiger (see my username). When it comes to this web site, I try and be as unbiased as possible with my contributions. I think I've developed a better ability to do that in what's now the site's sixth year on a dedicated server, but can't pretend to be completely without bias. I don't think anyone is really.
However, I've been lucky to get a pretty good pulse on 5A football around the state because I've been able to get out and watch games in different parts of the state in addition to staying in touch with the various contacts I've developed across the land through this web site. That allows me to look at things more clearly than I'd be able to otherwise, and I put a high value/priority on the thoughts and opinions of others. I enjoy reading our boards and the input yall have because I believe fans from a certain area know their school better than anyone else....admins included.

Terrence Henry but no Trent Hunter? Is that because we still don't know where or what Trent will play?
KT2000
01-30-2006, 11:31 PM
Hunter is on the all purpose list, or "AP." He'll most likely start at FS and play some RB like last year in addition to headhunting/kick block on special teams.

Mitchell earned 2nd team all district honors in a talented district. Given Conroe is a run based team, he got that mostly based on his blocking but he did average over 20 yards per catch the few times he got a chance to go downfield.

You might want to add AP Brad Ballew from Westlake. He started games at both DB and RB for the Chaps. If he hadn't had to split the district schedule between the two, he would have easily been all-district at one. He also returned all punts and kicks. He will probably play WR next year to replace Staton Jobe.

KT, I quickly glanced at the list, so I might have made a mistake, but didn't see any Cove players. I know they are rumored to move down to 4A, is that why? Would the list change if some 5A went to 4A?

Was glad to Strake Jesuit sophomores Jeff McVaney (AP) and Davis Burck (WR) on your lists. I felt two other Strake sophomores, David King (DL) and Aaron Jackson (OL) were also key contributors on last year's regional semi-final team and should have made their respective position lists.

More players will be added as we progress through the year as noted. There are roughly 618 players listed right now and that represents about the top 5% in the state. I base that percentage on the 12,000 players (conservative estimate) that will suit out in Class 5A this fall.
This is not a final list for 2006.

I would just like to nominate Jeremie Blackwell, safety for LD Bell for this list. He missed quite a few games this year due to personal reasons, but when he played I think he was 1st team all district worthy and we could have used him in the games he didn't played. He is an amazing athelete and even a bigger hitter. He can stop the run and pass very well. When he played against Trinity as a sophomore in 2004, he blew through those huge Trojan Linemen like they were nothing and shut down Nance/Handy. Unfortunatley he couldn't play against the Trojans this year and we really missed out on his contributions to the defense.

All-South Texas 3rd team DB, All-Bay Area New comer of the year (5a 4a 3a 2a 1a), dist 31-4a Co-new comer of the year. Defensive player of the week (once). He will definitely be a player to watch in 2006.
This player will probably be the starting tailback/DB next year and help his school win district for the next three years. For those of you who might remember G-P was ranked #1 in the state (4a) up to the playoffs in 2004 season and sent the 6th ranked tailback in the state to MIZZOU. Good luck to those Cats next year.

you ain't lyin! Look for Util. player, Brad Ballew to move over to WR next year, and backup QB Steven Shaffer to move to TE to get on the field. He has great size and should continue the Chaps recent tradition of D-1 TEs.
Also, LB Bron Hager could really blossom this year. He is the son of form UT all-american and NFLer Britt Hager. He had a hard time adjusting to the 5A game his first year after playing most of his carreer in a small private school (Regents). With a deep and experienced D-line in front of him, he could make a bunch of tackles this year.

90-95% of the players listed right now were either All-State or 1st/2nd team All-District picks a year ago.
We only take the 1st or 2nd all-district picks initially because some districts have much bigger all district teams than others with 3rd teams and hon. mentions.

Derek Stephens LB - Will be a 3 year starter and was offered by UT last weekend at Junior Day. One of the top ranked returning LB's in the country.

according most recruiters, you are borderline for anything except center. keep growing about an inch or 2 and you'll be eligible to play guard, and maybe tackle.

When speaking of the big name schools, you're probably correct. But, I bet there's a lot of other D1 schools where 6'1" 300 works pretty well if you have any quickness at all. There are a lot of colleges out there that have football programs. If you really want to play and you've got some athleticism, you'll play somewhere.

Offensive lineman in the 6-0 to 6-2 range should look for run oriented programs...Nebraska made a living making all-americans out of lineman that were not typical pro-style (tall with long arms), but with shorter, explosive/quick lineman that had powerful hips.

I've updated the Super List to reflect the most recent coaches surveys we've received. The list now has just over 800 players listed.
Before you go thinking, "Who didn't make it?", the 800 listed represent roughly the top 7% of all 5A players...and that's only assuming a "two-deep" roster (44 players) per team.

I hadn't checked the list in a few months. That's nice to see all the Consol boys on there. For all the consol boys that aren't Class of 07 D-1 bluechippers, this Spring training ought to be a good time to show off their skills, desire and talent as there will be a lot of college coaches/scouts I've talked to stopping by over the next few weeks.

this site has gone a long way...now players like that center from Marshall are shamelessly talking themselves up??
until I see the username MackBrown2005champs or DenFranchise on 5atexasfootball.com and there replies being "nice stats you posted about yourself son, here's my cell", stop bragging about how much you can eat because any football player can have a big number under "weight" but I won't care until I see that bench press max or 40 time complement the weight.

I haven't reviewed it completely but when I counted FOURTEEN players from Baytown Sterling and SEVEN players from Baytown Lee with the seasons they had last year and then considered ONE player from Strake Jesuit is still on your list (Davis Burck has been removed?) when they went 2 deep in the playoffs with a mostly underclassman team, well, it gave me cause for pause...

It's a simple case of which coaches have provided information and which haven't. In the cases where coaches haven't sent us info, there isn't much to go off of besides the All-District teams and the stats available in the Chronicle. Lee and Sterling's coaches both sent us great info, so we were able to recognize more of their players.

Also, any pre-season list is going to largely reflect returning talent from the previous year. That's what pre-season rankings are based on as well. Teams that return key parts from successful teams are obviously going to get higher rankings. No calculus formulas needed.
So, as far as the Houston area is concerned, teams like Strake Jesuit/Marshall/Westfield who graduated most of their key players will not be as well represented.
I think that factor gets overlooked sometimes.

hey kt, on your top players list you have OL Darr Nieuwoudt Sr 6'3 255 Oak Ridge listed. He actually transferred to conroe hs. the uil has told him though that he will not be eligible to play for them this upcoming season, therefore he will most likely play for st. pius...wow, very nice pickup for them!!! and he will play DL as he did his soph year at oak ridge

Your missing a few key players on your list....
RB
JJ Mullins - Clear Creek (just signed with K-State Friday according to galvnews.com)
DB
Brandon Burton - Clear Creek (big time return guy...will spend 20% of time as WR but has been 2 yr starter at DB)
Nolan Loflin - Clear Creek (mentioned in Dave Campbells last season)
Garrett Rimel - Clear Creek (several blocked punts and couple of picks)
All three of these players run 4.46 forties or better and are all 3 over 6' tall.
WR
Taylor Echols - Second team all district 2004 and will big time in 2006 since Austin Yancy is gone and headed to Stanford.
All of them are seniors this year.
Because Creeks young defense struggled last year with all the youth and a new program, they are much bigger and faster this year and should be much much improved. This is the season for Creek because all the speedsters are seniors and this will be Neal Warden's chance to shine with lots of support. 2006 is the best chance they have to shine with 2007 losing 95% of their speed.
KT2000
04-17-2006, 12:20 PM
I know who Echols is, he should already be on there.
As it says on the page..."work in progress"
Oiler1
04-17-2006, 12:52 PM
Nope....you had Echols on it last year but not this year so far and yes, I'm aware its a work in progress.
Unfortunately some great players were sacrificed at the district meetings (Pearland won the district) that should have made all district. Taylor was one of them and JJ Mullins is the La Marque transfer.
Defense could not stop the run up the middle and the 3 returning Sr. DB's made more tackles than picks. Why throw when you can run for 8 to 10 a clip.
If you don't believe me that Creek is loaded with speed just check out the 24-5A district meet results (all football players). They cleaned house with 197 points. G'ball came in last (that program is in trouble) with Pearland coming in 2nd.

Baytown Sterling shouldn't have that many players on the list, but Lee has a lot of talent coming through in the next few years. They probably will only have 2 seniors goto college to play football, but they have at least 5 or 6 juniors that will play football in college. I don't think them having 7 is that bad of a number.
I'd be willing to bet Baytown Lee will have many more college signees over the next 3 years than Strake does for football. Now will that translate into victories? Who knows?

Who knows? When I made the previous comment I didn't understand how the list was formulated. I assumed it was based on last year's performance by underclassmen. I was like, "how can Baytown Sterling have so many studs?" with their record last year, and "how can SJ have NO lineman when their entire offensive line was underclassman?"... Now I understand that the list is primarily based on coach's feedback, which makes the list more sensical to me...
As far as who has more college level talent... I know Lee has a good JR. class... I know a lot of those kids personally... The more that get to play at the next level, the happier I'll be for them...
KT2000
04-18-2006, 07:41 AM
The huge majority of the list is based on returning talent from last year which is obviously all we have to go by at this point. We're still adding players who did well last year. Sterling happens to return most of their production from last year, so they're naturally more represented at this point than teams who don't return as much.
Coach feedback is definitely helpful (to guarantee accuracy), but not what "makes the list" if that makes sense. IE, we don't put players on there because a coach or parent simply sends us their name. We research what the player has done, and go from there.
95% of the players listed earned some kind of post-season recognition last year whether that be all-state, all-district, all-area, etc.

I just didn't understand how it was formulated or how Baytown Sterling was so bad last year having 14 on this year's list, 95% of whom were at least all-district...
By the way, at one point you had WR Davis Burck, Strake Jesuit, who caught the winning TD against Marshall, ON the list... What did he do to get removed?

Baytown Sterling's representation is more the exception than the rule. 7 of the 14 listed received All-District honors. I added 7 others that their coach believed could be D1 or D1AA prospects.

Abilene High has a kid that will be a Soph that has had people hopping, gasping, ooing and awing so far this spring. His name is Chris Williams and will most likely start at middle LB seeing some time at RB. The kid is quick, fast, big (6'0-6'1 and 205) (big for Abilene) and will flat bring it. Everyone that frequents practice mentions him. I am hoping to get to the black gold game for a look see. Don't expect him to be on anybody's list this year but he'll be on everybody's next year.

Taylor Stuckey is on there. Look on the RB page and scroll down to the fullbacks. He could have a very good season, and think he will after sharing time with Jordan Hill last year. He's tested very well during the off-season.
Brad Graham is a player who could be added during the season. I'm just looking to see him in a bigger role this year. I think he's a good one though.

I don't see two players from Keller High School on your list. Cal Farley was leading in passing yards in the D/FW area much of the year until he was injured in the Southlake Carroll game. Also returning is WR James Ritenour who had just under 500 yards receiving with 30 plus cathes.

I think at least for more players from Austin Westlake should be added.
OL - Dusty Davidson, he quit last year, but this guy is a beast. He's around 6'3 290ish. He was on varsity sophmore year but junior year he quit due to lack of desire. Despite this, he is still receiving interests from quite a few D-1 colleges.
LB - Bron Hager, started and had lots of tackles last season, should have been 1st team all district, I don't know how the senior back up, Cody Porter got it instead. He is receiving interest from many D-1 colleges including LSU.
TE - Stephen Shaffer, incredible athlete, though he didn't play much last season, has incredible hands and is very physical, he is receiving interest from many D-1 schools.
P/K - Justin Wang, more a punter because he injured his ankle, has a monster leg for kicking, average around 42 yards a punt last season. He is receiving interest from quite a few D-1 colleges for his punting including Nebraska and Northwestern, but has potential to kick as well.

Thanks for the input guys. The players to watch list is ongoing and never really complete.
We are constantly adding to it this time of year, and it'll definitely get bigger once the Guide is out and we can add the players we researched for the Guide. Many of the players mentioned above will be added because we've had a chance to go more in depth going the Guide stuff.
Once the Guide is out, the rest of the summer will be 7 on 7 and PTW updates in addition to any Guide edits that need to be made.

Cal Farley is on the superlist and he was amazing until being injured(probably the best qb in 5-5a last year). Ritenour had a great start to the season until he got knocked out at the denton ryan game (what a vicious hit that was), but i would say look for ritenour to be one of the top receivers in the district.

west, Britt to me was the standard by which I would measure Permian Line Backers although he was also great RB here also, a lot of the kids went both ways for Permian. He was to the best of memory around 185 lbs and a little over six feet. He won the big class state shotput championship his senior year. He also had two brothers, one was good in basketball. Not football related but he married one of the prettiest Permian girls ever. Or state for that matter.

westlake, he made all state in 83 as LB but he also ran for 1043 yards in 14 games. I have no idea what his speed was I'm not sure it was ever documented. Permian always won with small quick kids. So saying a guy was 6-5 and weighed 310 didn't mean much to us. That may relate to potential but may not relate to player. We measured defense players by the amount of snot they could knock out of someone rather that size or 40 time.
Anyhow he was good enough for Texas. This district, two Abilene schools, two Midland schools, two Odessa schools and one from San Angelo have more large class state football championships than any district in the state.
One of you teams there has a claim to fame. Reagan has beaten Permian two times in 68 and 70 state final games.17 to 11 and 21 to 14. So we have played in that area before. Also Yates drilled us in Austin in 85.
Like you were about west Texas I know nothing about teams in Region 3 and 4. This could be a year where we may get back to your area. Its been a long dry spell.
Good luck to your guys and your welcome for the genes we sent your way.

Yes, I know. The term "starter" is different at Garland. They will play 18 to 20 on both sides, from start to finish. Caldwell most likely played as much as most starters.

Not a bad list, however, when you compare it to Dave Campbell's Texas Football TOP 300 players, how in the world do you leave off Justin Padron, MLB Southlake Carroll. He was only their leading tackler (236 tackles)last year on a defense that stifled the competition. Ask Katy (Padron had 19 tackles, 2 tipped passes, and a 14 yard QB sack all with a dislocated elbow from the previous week against Lufkin), ask Lufkin (14 tackles and a momentum turning tackle on a fake punt), ask Plano (15 tackles), I know Abilene knows who #44 is. He was always around Potts and 52-0 whooping is impressive. I believe you forgot one. How can Tex FB rank him amongst the Top 20 LB's in the state and top 300 in Texas and he doesn't crack KT2000's list. Padron has been called a warrior and the heart and soul of the Dragon defense by no other than an authority on Dragon football, Todd Dodge! Justin Padron has all-state written on him, again, according to Dave Campbell Tex FB.
