I really cannot believe that Aggy is actually doing this. It is amazing. I guess they should sue almost every football coach and every football fan and every football announcer while they are at it.Link (http://www.thebatt.com/media/paper657/news/2006/01/27/News/Trademarking.Your.Territory-1515107.shtml?norewrite&sourcedomain=www.thebatt.com)

This is not so out of the ordinary. Kansas State threatened to sue a DFW area school district a few years ago for using a likeness of the K State Wildcat. I would think UT might have trademark registration to the longhorn moniker as well. Usually offending parties do so as an oversight and cease once they are notified. The Chicago Bears & Buffalo Bills used the 12th man several years ago but stopped when they found of the trademark infringement. So far Paul Allen has not seen fit to honor the trademark rights.

but how can somebody trademark something as general as the 12th man. That is ridiculous. Are they going to claim that the 6th man award in the NBA is too close to the trademark too?

There are lots of simple things that get trademark or copyright protection through the law. A&M did receive a registered trademark for the 12th man. I am not saying it is good or bad it just is. The whole area has a huge impact financially because through the trademark rights, A&M is entitled to all the revenues generated using the trademark.... that is really what it is about... the money.

The K-state thing caught my eye because Humble (Wildcats) uses the same logo on their helmets as KSU. I wonder if they worked something out. Hell, the Woodlands use the same funky "W" that is on U of Wisconsin helmet.

I personally thought it was pretty cheap of the Seahawks to use the 12th man reference with A&M having used it for so long.
poooooooor aggy! i was wondering if the 'hawks are aspiring to win 4 games next year.

Seattle first made reference to it back in 1984 when they retired a 12th man jersey in honor of the fans. They really did not do much with it until this year when they revived the promo early in the year. A&M was in touch with them a few months ago long before they were locked into the SB. They (Seattle) have chosen not to respond. I talk with a friend of mine who lives on Widbey Island and he said the 12th man stuff seemd to be gaining momentum by the 2nd game this year.

another instance of copyright infringement (which this is, and whether horn fans like it or not, it's a legitimate beef), was when Warner Bros. made Schulenburg HS change their Shorthorns logo from the Superman logo.

Uh....they're defending they're rights to the trademark....what's wrong with it? It'd be the if some pro team adopted the longhorns as their mascot and started using "hook'em horns" as they're logo or saying and made a fortune selling things that had "hook'em horns" on it.

Considering the life expectancy of a collie is 8-12 years, then they'd have a funeral roughly every 12 years (considering that Ms. Reveille is well taken care of). Now, I don't see how they'd be constantly doing funerals if this occurence happens every 12 years.

You don't get in full dress uniform...ERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!...pretend army garb....and hold a ceremony at your football stadium....then proceed to bury said stiff dog...right outside the stadium....and give it it's own little personal scoreboard...

maybe you should find out about your school that you support. I found this from the official corps website.

While membership in the Corps itself carries no military obligation, all cadets must take basic ROTC classes during their first two years. Subsequent enrollment in advanced ROTC leads to an officer's commission, but is strictly voluntary. Approximately one-third of graduating cadets choose this career option. However, most cadets receive non-military advanced leadership training through the Office of the Commandant and are termed Drill and Ceremonies (D&C) Cadets. They participate fully in all Corps activities, but do not incur a military service commitment.

For one, his pants aren't down. Two, I don't see how this somehow implies that the person in said photos has a liking to the animals. But is merely holding the head inbetween his knees/thighs. The reason, as I can only speculate, to why he's holding it like that is that if he were to hold it from the side, it would not be a good place to hold it and would impair the profile picture of the animal and it's pretty basic to never get behind an animal.

So this media is doing this because they have a liberal bias, or because they just don't like Bush, or they are doing this to sell newspapers, or they are doing this because they are stupid, or they are doing this because they have a hidden agenda that includes a plan to overthrow the entire government. find me somebody that is not Aggy that thinks that having an elaborate funeral for a dog is normal. Then ask that same person if it is normal to build a scoreboard outside of their graves so that they know the score of the football games. Then ask that same person if a dead animal should be subjected to such terrible football. Then ask that same person if it is normal to play dress up as a soldier every weekend. I garauntee you they will not think that is normal. I do not condemn somebody for thinking differently than I do. I condemn them for being stupid.
1. Having an elaborate funeral for a dead dog is not normal.
2. The scoreboard for the dog is stupid. I wouldn't complain if they put up a sign and said (for example) "This is where Reveille 3 is buried and she lived from 1991-2004."
3. Terrible football probably killed a few dogs.
4. I don't think it's necessary to play Soldier/Seaman/Airman/Marine for every waking hour for 4 years. I say the same thing about the Academies, The Citadel, and VMI. It doesn't make you any better for the military and that's why I never gave thought about going through Air Force ROTC at A&M.

Yes, 2/3 are playing dress-up. That stuff is crazy. I'm a career Air Force guy, I really care about my job and work a lot of hours because I'm dedicated, but nobody in the military wants to or does think military 24/7. We can't be that way no matter how much we love our job. I'll work 20 hour days if I need to and I'll go on long deployments, but we all need, want, and take breaks from being a military guy or gal to keep our sanity. We sure don't want to wear a uniform 24/7 even though we're proud to wear a uniform.

The article said that all cadets have to take ROTC for the first 2 years. Of the guys who stay in the Corps all 4 years, which is probably the vast majority, 1/3 end up in the military. One thing that hasn't been mentioned so far is if there are a limited number of Cadets who can take Advanced ROTC. All the military services limit the number of new officers, so they may be competing for spots in the classroom at A&M.

TCU- frog- on farm, but not farm animal
Rice- owl- on farm, but not farm animal

ALL ROTC members wear a uniform while they're in training. The difference is A&M does it 24/7 and it doesn't get them anything that all the other ROTC kids don't get after 4 years.

Personally, I think it's foolish for somebody to go through 4 years as a Cadet and not join the military. Even if they don't have room for all the Cadets in Advanced ROTC, they can still apply for OTS or join enlisted. I know kids have fun in sports and most hope to go to the next level from where they're currently at, but some want to get to a certain level and quit. I know people are proud to be in the Corps, but I do question why somebody would stop with the military stuff after 4 years in the Corps.

All the members who are in any of the Advanced ROTC's get a monthly stipend for their Junior and Senior years. They also offer 2, 3, and 4 year scholarships in ROTC that require a military commitment.

All I'm trying to say to the A&M guys is that the least you should get out of 4 years in the Corps is to prepare you for military service. I bet the guys who used to be in the Corps all joined the military.

Dude that’s just all wrong. The US Coast Guard has sea rescue ops that are second to none (including the US Navy and Air Force and they DO it a lot more in real life situations, not just for the IG.
Their web site is uscg.mil , not uscg.com or uscg.edu. You should check it out.

Didn’t we have some punk on here that we all agreed posted inappropriate comments about our President and military? I see no difference in what you posted. These men and women are serving while most in America don’t.

As the duly appointed Secretary of Defense on this board and a former member of the Air Force police (in the fine tradition of Chuck Norris and Sinbad), I think you should apologize for that comment or I’ll bust you’re a$$ and make you laugh about it…
The Coast Guard is a part of the Pentagon. They are a military branch in time of war, but don't usually go to fight with the other branches. I can see making fun of them a little, but they shouldn't be completely dismissed. I make fun of the Guard and Reserve, but those guys still do their time in deployed locations.

I assume by Pentagon you mean the Dept of Homeland Security. That is where they are since 2003. From 1967 to 2003 they were part of the Dept of Transportation. Prior to 1967 they were in the Dept of the Treasury. In time of war you are correct.. they are loaned to the Navy. I think the last time that was done was in WWII.

It means the Coast Guard guys are a part of the military and they die just like we do. I just came back from Kyrgyzstan. We didn't have the Coast Guard come through just because Kyrgyzstan and Afghanistan are landlocked, but I saw plenty of the other branches who had been in the war effort from 4 months to 2 years. That's right, they have some people who have to spend up to 2 years in a war zone with a few R&R breaks thrown in. Those Coast Guard guys do help with the war, but not as much as the rest of us with their limited numbers.

First of all, I will clarify that I bleed orange through and through.
Secondly, being a grad of UT, I understand the importance of tradition and what it means to the students even decades after the fact. This includes traditions with mascots. Does A&M take it a little far sometimes? Sure. Every college takes tradition a little far.
Thirdly, who cares if it is a dog. It's a mascot. Hell, Bevo lives better than half the students at UT and generally, a collie has more intelligence than cattle.
Next, Rattler, don't attempt to beat Wide to death with facts. It will do no good. He doesn't listen to reason.

Everyone lay off A&M for a while. It is still a fine University to graduate from whether you buy into all the tradition or not. If you get a degree from there in anything, you'll probably do well in your career.
