I hope not...he only needed to hang around for another year or so at Longview to become AD. Besides....HENDERSON!?!?

Hard to turn down a 40,000 dollar raise.

But when it's possible to stick it out for a couple of years for Collins to retire and make even more than that....I donno about you, but I'd stick it out. Besides, it would truly show its about money. He has the chance to become a legacy in 5A football.

Oh well, it is his decision.

Yeah I saw somwhere that the position pays $110,000. I would have to think about that one long and hard.

He is also stepping into a program that hasn't been doing real well recently. If he doesn't turn the program around he will canned also. I don't know if leaving a winning program with potential for advancement is worth that.

If I were Longview - I'd scrape up a $20,000 raise real quick like.

King to remain as Longview football coach

John King has decided not to pursue the Henderson head football coach and athletic director's job further, choosing to remain at Longview High School.

He told the Longview News-Journal Friday afternoon that after dropping his two children off at day-care in the morning, he couldn't leave Longview and the Lobo football program.

"I had all the intentions of going to Henderson this morning," King said. "I came out of the school and it got to me. It came down to the kids that play for us and the effort they give. The class that they play with.

"I haven't ever coached in a better place than Lobo Stadium on a Friday night. I've been here six years and have since the ups and downs. I felt like time hadn't run out on me."

School officials at Henderson had approached King after Tyler Lee coach Mike Owens turned down the same job last weekend.

Henderson ISD Superintendent Tommy Alexander said on Thursday that King would be at Henderson High School on Friday and that he had hoped to have him hired Monday.

Former Henderson athletic director and head football coach Reid Waller was reassigned on Jan. 18.

This backs up what I think of Coach King....he's a class act. I was going to very dissapointed if he left the first time someone threw some money in his face(although I woudn't have blamed him). His comments prove what kind of program we have at Longview.

This statement is kind of misleading too me. First you said you would have been dissapointed if he left, and that he,s a class act. Then next you said "although you would have not blamed him" so which is it inquiring minds want too know.

Once again. Longview is going on the cheap. They pay their coach $70K a year when other schools pay far more. When will somebody in that town do something right? That arrow on the city flag has been pointing in the wrong direction for almost 20 years now!

Before anybody says something about money, let me say this. Throwing a lot of money around does not guarantee you get a good coach, worker, etc. I do know your best workers, coaches, etc. know their worth and don't take cheap salaries when they know the demand for their talent brings more money.

One of my mom's former bosses always said, "When you pay peanuts, you get monkeys!":D

BigArab

That has partly to do with him not being the AD in LISD.

I think Henderson should go after Coach Dodge. He deserves a raise more than anyone:D

Here is what the Henderson paper says about the Coach King deal:

Are you sure it was just the kids or did the Longview ISD throw a little more money down on the table to keep King in Longview?

Don't mean that to be misleading. i don't see the contradiction in my statement. I just meant a $40,000 raise is a very hard thing to turn down and therefore I wouldn't have blamed him for leaving although I would've been very dissapointed.

was the 40k difference all in coaching salary, or was it an ad job too?

With the talent Longview consistently has, Barry Switzer could even get them to state.

The last time Longview was at State was 1997 and they haven't been past the 4th round since then. They are graduating this year probably the best collective talent that Longview has had since that 1997 team and got KO'd in the 1st round to boot. I would find it hard to leave a winning 5A program to re-build a struggling 4A Henderson program. Some things you can't replace with big money.
