I would have to go with Fanuzzi, Claybon, and Nathan Dick. If Riley Dodge does good as the main guy next year, he will probably get the most press and the media will name him 5A player of the year.

Oh...of course.
I meant the last portion....5a player of the year...is that a prediction?
Or are you just saying....all he has to do is show up and play above average...and the press will give it to him?

well I think that he may be able to Reggie Bush his way into the player of the year, or atleast all state quarterback.

I think Claybon is a pretty easy choice for the top spot, followed closely by Nick Foles of Austin Westlake. Justin Johnson is an option QB, but he's awesome. Dodge and Fanuzzi will be up there for sure. Don't forget about Nick Florence (Jr. to be) of SG, Boogie Anognostou of La Porte, Denzel Dewberry of SGP, Jeff Welch of Cy Falls, and Bryan Hill of SV. The best athlete at the QB position might be Demetrius Woods of Houston Lamar.

Jeremy Claybon of Lufkin should be a top prospect in 2006. I think he will be a better QB as a senior, than Riley Dodge will be as a junior. However, the difference is the media hype that surrounds the Southlake program, for good reasons and the media coverage that is available in the Dallas area opposed to deep East Texas. Dodge wil have all eyes on him to carry on the standard of excellence at the QB position for Southlake. Too bad the Dragons didn't get to play against Jeremy in the semi-finals in 2005, I am sure the game would have been much closer or maybe could have had a different outcome with Jeremy playing QB in that game.

If I had to pick the top 10 returning QBs right now...(alpha order)
Boogie Anagnostou, La Porte
Joe Chaisson, Beaumont West Brook
Jeremy Claybon, Lufkin
Denzel Dewberry, South Grand Prairie
Nathan Dick, Allen
Nick Fanuzzi, San Antonio Churchill
Nick Florence, South Garland
Nick Foles, Austin Westlake
Justin Johnson, Richardson Berkner
Demetrius Woods, Houston Lamar
Out of that group...I've seen Chaisson, Claybon and Woods in person.
A few first year starters to watch are Riley Dodge (Southlake Carroll), Vance Fizer (North Shore) and Josh McKinley (Leander). McKinley played safety and some receiver last year, but he'll be the QB this fall from what I've heard. Not a definite though. Very good athlete at 6'2, 210-215.

Forgot to add Daren Dillard of Garland Lakeview Centennial as another to watch. Went over 2,000 yards in 10 games last fall. 13 TDs to 6 INTs as a junior. Starter since soph year.

He will be the man with the bulleye target pasted on his chest and every LB will have his number if the OL is weak. Predicting the future? 2006 - Claybon (it's a Lufkin thing)

2008 - Jeffrey Claybon should be in this running as it will be his Senior year

Josh McKinley will be up there with anybody else IMO. Their was the heated qb controversy at the start of this year with him and Drew Dunn, and Drew ended up putting up 2500+ yards passing and was named 15-5a MVP, so you can't base it on him not starting this year. But Josh is just an overall athlete, and he plays really smart. This year he didnt exactly get a good enough shot with qb because when he was in we were obviously running the ball, either with a lead or by the formation. I think KT2000 put it best during the gridiorn guide, he reminds Leander fans of Al Pena at OK state, but hes probably a better runner.

I saw this guy on video tape as they played Irving Macarthur, and he was really good and accurate, although he threw the ball like a baseball.
Denzel Dewberry of South Grand Prairie is a winner and knows how to get it done.

Nick Foles had a great Jr. year, but all his best recievers are set to graduate. He's already got several offers on the table and is being recruited by everybody! If the Chaps can find some replacements in the receiving corps, he could be set for another great year.

LOL, i guess Nick makes a good QB name.
I think Carl Bouldin would suprise a few people this year, but I don't think the offensive line will be good enough for him to do so.

I you get a chance to go watch Richardson Berkner, go check out Justin Johnson. He's been a starter since his sophomore year and he's gotten better over time. The knock on him is that he can't throw the football with any accuracy. But it's something I know they were working on in practice all this year and if I know Ledford like I think I do, he'll have Justin hitting targets in the offseason. This kid is exciting to watch and can take over a game if need be. Next year should be a good indication as to how good he is, because he will have a relatively inexperienced line (one exception Josh LeRebius). He reminds me a lot of Cordell Stewart. My vote goes to Justin Johnson.

Justin Smith will be a JR at Conroe HS this upcoming season. He lettered last fall as a soph by being the starting P, K, and the #3 WR. He will be moving to QB this year, and because of his great athleticism he should be a great QB next year!

Are we talking best pure QB or best athlete of QB's. Dodge definitely looks like a type of player that even if he doesnt have the best ppl around him he can make it work. But if he had to stay in the pocket and plant his feet every play, do you think someone would be better? I do. Half the players yall are talking about I havent seen play or heard of, so I don't know about their ability or stats. Never the less, by the end of the season even if Dodge has the better numbers, one or more of those QB's will be a better pure passer.

Since the RGV NEVER gets any love...i'm gonna go with Jonethon Sarver from Sharyland, 06' will be his 3rd season as Sharyland's starter and he's ONLY GOTTEN BETTER, he's got a CANNON hanging from his right shoulder and has decent size 6'1 185lbs.....if Sharyland would throw the ball MORE he'd put some pretty GAUDY NUMBERS UP TOO.....he's VERY accurate and can make ANY THROW

Look for Nick Foles of Austin Westlake to lead his team far into the playoffs and get a lot of attention. Westlake is a good team with a 6' 5" Qb who is 240 and is a great passer.

It's going to be interesting to see how he does without the Wr-Staton Jobe and the Te's he had last season. I know those dudes made some big plays for Austin Westlake and helped out Nick Foles a ton.
I do think Nick Foles has some bigtime skill however. He should shine at Arizona St in their pass happy offense that is wide-open.

I dont about best overall qb but certainly one of the best dual threat, Sam Proctor an exciting addition to our offense this yr.

05-28-2006, 06:06 PM
After watching last year, parts of spring ball and 7 on 7, I'll throw the CyFalls QB into the ring - Jeff Welch. Top returning signal caller in 17-5a with good field presence, leadership and arm strength. Will have many tools to work with on offense - Roger Holland, Jack Freeman, Garrett Williams, Darius Thomas and Geoff Dobbin to name a few - only issue is patience and accepting what defenses give while not "forcing" things.

Only a QB with a team operating the spread offence, that is the only way the big numbers can be achieved. The evidence is that Southlake Carroll have provided the #1 QB for the last 4 years. Riley Dodge has to be one of the favorites for this season.

Well what does the title "the best" mean? Southlake puts up the numbers and produces very good quarterbacks there is no doubt about that but they throw 90% of the time. At trinity last year Trevor Vittatoe threw for 2000 yards which is good but small compared to spread teams but he still got the job done. Without his performance we couldnt have won state. So if putting up numbers is what the title means it will always be a passing quarterback. If it means playing your role and doing what you must to win then the whole perspective changes. You have to look at the players competitive drive and desire to win, it cant be all about stats.

The spread is not the only offense where big passing numbers can be achieved. You can put up big passing #'s in several different types of offense. ( Pro set, I, normal shotgun etc etc) Nobody runs the spread as their main offense in the NFL. Of course the qb and wr's will be able to put up bigger numbers on a passing team just like rb's will usually be able to put up bigger numbers on a running team. It only makes sense.

With the offense Westlake has returning, i think its a safe bet that Nick Foles of Westlake is not only one of the best qb prospects in the state of Texas, but he will be one of the qb's putting up the best numbers. Westlake doesnt run strictly out of the spread, they run plenty of under center stuff. But he should put up close to 3000 yards passing (i know i know, nothing like what Riley Dodge will probably put up but its still good).

i think you need to check out a spread team like slc before making such 90% comments. the ratio is actually almost 50-50. the yardage is higher on the passing side, but that is expected.

i understand that the slc spread offense provides more opportunities for a qb to shine, than a mostly running back based offense. it also means that defenses are less able to focus on one facet. the et offense forced teams to play 8 man fronts, easing the pass defense in the effort to stop the bleeding. had the et system been 50 50, defensive coordinators would have adjusted accordingly.

the qb at South Garland should be really fun to watch. Claybon will be good to, but I noticed he seems to throw alot of interceptions. maybe that will change this year. Also, the qb that transferred from Georgia to Wylie will turn a few heads as well. He has good size, 6-4 220 lbs. but not very speedy. I think his name is Patrick Witt
