I will be practical - y'all will probably beat us. I don't think it's going to be a blow out like you think it will be.
Red Raiders - 35
Longhorns - 49
I don't think it will be a blowout either, and Texas could wind up in a hole early if they come out flat like they did today. But I think Horns will come out on top at the end by around 15-20.

Texas looked slow today against mediocre competition. They may have their hands full.
Only one team that Texas wants to exact revenge upon more than Oklahoma, and that is Texas Tech... at home.

I think that Potts is going to throw at least a couple of INTs against the Texas secondary and that will be the main difference. UT will score points off of turnovers.

We'll see about that. That's not Harrell back there throwing to Crabtree and this ain't the same secondary that was bottom 10 in the nation. It's the same Texas offense though, but with a better running game.

Potts has a good arm, but still doesn't have a grasp of the offense that Harrell did. And you're not playing in the Jones. And Texas has a great secondary this year, and will have a good pass rush going against the young guys on your OL.

Potts wasn't pressured all that much tonight like he was last week against North Dakota. That could be a big reason why we saw no interceptions tonight vs. 3 interceptions last week.
Potts will be seeing a lot of Burnt Orange in his face next Saturday...it all goes back to the OL, but like I said, if he can limit bad decision making, we can stay relatively close to Texas on the scoreboard.

I think Texas will get some of the banged up kids back this week and will have some revenge in their eyes, Potts will face pressure beyond belief next week and, I agree with Bird, he will throw some balls up for grabs and the Texas secondary will make him pay. I dont see anything on the Tech defense that has me worried that we wont be able to score at will against them, providing Greg Davis doesn't have us dropping back and throwing the ball 50 times...This Texas offense is so damn good, but we need to force teams to stop us on the ground first and it would be better. I think we'll come out on fire Saturday and spank Tech in every facet of the game.

Yes, because God forbid Texas fans...or any fans can be confident about their teams chances in a game..
Not very different from the confidence Texas fans had last season going into Lubbuck, which would be relative to the confidence displayed by OU fans going into the game in Dallas last season.

That and play calling was the most disappointing aspects in the Wyoming game... the Cowboys were able to get pressure at times with 3 linemen and yet Davis continued to call pass plays...Sometimes when your O line is struggling in pass protection, the best thing to do is let them get down and pound on the D linemen with run blocking. I know we are going to pass more than run, but when we are averaging over 6 yards a carry, we need to run until they stop it.

I think a bunch of you cats are out of your mind and will list the reasons:
1. I know all about the revenge factor, but that factor has been tainted on several fronts. Texas is like a 17 point favorite, so it's not like the 'horns have been given every reason this year to be stomping around mad about their next opponent.
2. All the crap Mack has said since November 1st has created a mentality in 'horn nation that Tech got lucky and it was a fluke. All that talk has nothing to do with truly respecting your opponent and it will show.
3. I truly believe OU respects Tech more than Texas' coaches, players, and fans do and it will impact Saturday night.
4. There is nothing Tech wants to do more than beat Texas again. Contrary to popular belief, I think Tech will be more focused on beating Texas than the 'horns will be to beat Tech because it's in Austin, you're #2, we're unranked, and everybody has you in the Title Game.
5. Besides Tech beating the 'horns worse than the score said last year, it took a bogus TD and on onside kick recovery (Great call) and a few shadies from the refs to get that 59-43 win in 07 and we've talked ad nauseum about how crooked 06 was. My point is all things being equal, without the refs help the last 3 years, Texas would've lost in 06 by about 10, might've won a close one in 07, and would've lost last year by about 20 because they never would've had the momentum push from the bogus punt return.
6. Now that I've said my ref rant, I hope it's legit this year, but I sure wouldn't bet on the reffing to be legit.
7. People come and go each year and it's always good to do a progress check to see how teams stack up to each other and themselves from previous years and I did that with Texas and Tech earlier. These stats are from the first 2 games for both teams each of the last 2 years and all 8 games were ones where Texas and Tech were expected to win against lesser opponents.
Texas 08
94-23 score
907-704 yards
57-36 first downs
553-522 passing yards
354-182 rushing yards
Texas 09
100-30 score
1106-571 yards
60-35 first downs
716-385 passing yards
390-186 rushing yards
1. Score-wise, UT is similar to last year.
2. The yardage disparity has grown quite a bit with improvement on both sides.
3. The first down department is negligible.
4. The passing yard game is better with better pass defense, but the yards per attempt stat is basically the same on offense, but better on D.
5. The running game is a little better and basically the same on D.
6. The trend says Texas is better in 09 than 08. It's not earth-shattering, but they're better.
Tech 08
84-43 score
1060-852 yards
50-52 first downs
833-605 passing yards
227-247 rushing yards
Tech 09
93-23 score
1005-464 yards
50-36 first downs
913-331 passing yards
92-133 rushing yards
1. The team that lost an award-winning QB and WR is scoring more and giving up a lot less points.
2. Point 1 is backed up with almost as many yards and a lot better D in 09.
3. That also plays out in the first down department.
4. Despite losing a 3-year starting QB, Tech has more passing yards in 09 and the passing D has almost been cut in half.
5. The rushing yards are down a lot, but this has all the look of a red herring to me. I think Tech has been waiting to break out the running game because every indication going into the year said the running game was going to be better in 09 and we sure enough have better talent back there in 09. The rush defense that has plagued Tech many times in the past has been solid this year.
6. I'm left to believe that Tech has improved more from 08 to 09 than Texas has.
7. The single biggest jump in play from last week to this week will probably be from Potts as he gets more and more comfortable at QB. I've already heard a couple times this year that Potts will probably be Leach's best QB yet in his first year starting.
8. I'd be lying if I didn't say all the injuries and attrition on the D-line didn't bother me.
9. Thankfully, I haven't seen Texas really slow Tech down much on offense in recent years.
I know all that I've said so far, but I think the perfect storm is forming again. Texas is being set up for failure with all the hype, the lack of hype for Tech, and all of Mack's 1-second comments and even his latest snippet recently about Leach doing a good job convincing QB's to wait their turn before playing (Trying to get a recruiting edge because he knows Tech is a threat!)
Tech 42
Texas 38
Blah, blah, jibberish, blah blah, jibberish, blah blah, the refs are crooked, blah, blah, jibberish, Tech is better than Texas this year, blah, blah jibberish, Tech was really better in '06 and '09 blah, blah jibberish, refs screwed us, blah, blah jibberish, I eat tinfoil for breakfast lunch and dinner, I speak to outer space, blah, blah, jibberish, I dont get papercuts, I get tinfoil cuts, blah, blah, jibberish, refs screwed us, blah, blah, jibberish

Thanks for the pictures. I'll just say that those who don't follow Tech don't have a clue yet how good Tech will be this year and that will play out on Saturday night. Even if Texas wins the game, everybody will know that Tech is for real. I've talked on here about the growth of Tech's program for the last 4 years and they're still on an upswing. At some point during or between the 2009 and 2010 seasons, Tech will be nationally recognized as a football power. It just takes success after Harrell and Crabtree and Tech will be the favorites to win the Big 12 next year if Bradford doesn't come back.

Yeah Lonny. Ever year Tech is better than everyone thinks. Every year Tech is on the upswing. Every year is just a year away until Tech is nationally respected. 2006 and 2007 were shams because of the referees. Tech has an underrated running game despite every statistical category and everyone not named Lonny agree that it is well below average. yada yada yada. Blah blah blah.
If you said all the nonsense you say less often people might actually read what you have to say and bother to respond but you've gone well past the point where anyone actually takes you seriously anymore. Beyond that, you've said it so much that you couldn't even start a new name on here because the idiocy would be instantly recognizable.

Tech 42
Texas 38

Thanks for the pictures. I'll just say that those who don't follow Tech don't have a clue yet how good Tech will be this year and that will play out on Saturday night. Even if Texas wins the game, everybody will know that Tech is for real. I've talked on here about the growth of Tech's program for the last 4 years and they're still on an upswing. At some point during or between the 2009 and 2010 seasons, Tech will be nationally recognized as a football power. It just takes success after Harrell and Crabtree and Tech will be the favorites to win the Big 12 next year if Bradford doesn't come back.
Actually that would be false. Most I see that follow Tech closely are quite concerned about this year's team. Lots of losses on the O, and a D that can return to questionable at a moment's notice.
I'll state again that this game IMO will be closer than some are thinking - I've got Texas by 14. Beyond that - your entire hypothesis is as flawed as you thinking Tech is a top 10 program.
Did Taylor red-shirt his freshman year, or is this it for him?

In a nutshell - that is the problem with Lonny's "insights". His stats are beyond meaningless - thus, his hypotheses are always whacked out.
I am never confident facing Tech, especially at night.
Tech is not UL Monroe or @ Wyoming, but @ Texas is not North Dakota and Rice.
Revenge should be a factor, but I thought the same thing about KState/a$M in '07.
DKR can rock with the best of them, but it certainly is not typical. See Houston '90 for the likely the best example.
I like facing a new QB three games in, opposed to eight games in. I saw Potts play in HS, and was not uber-impressed by his decision making. That being said, he's not in HS any more.
Huey should be back, will Detron Lewis be?

Going into the year, we wondered about things, but stuff starts to play out as the season rolls along.
1. Will Potts play error-free football in the Big 12? I don't know, but he's doing better after his first 2 starts than the 3rd year starter did last year and that says something. There is a natural curve going up for new starters, but we're off to a good start.
2. Texas broke in a lot of new guys last year, but in several areas they're not necessarily that much better so far this year unless Muschamp has them hiding all the great improvement since last year. I do think the pass D is a little better, but we haven't seen this great jump yet.
3. Tech was supposed to be crippled with all the new guys on the D-line and Secondary with the LBs returning. Tech is playing a lot of young guys, but so far they're blowing last year's guys out of the water and will only keep getting better.
4. People had questions about the O-line. I know we haven't played Texas yet, but what I've seen over the years is that Tech pretty much always reloads on the line and is OK.
5. You'll hear a lot of Lou Holtz talk out of Tech fans and I gripe about stuff in blowout wins, but that's because I want perfection. Don't let that get in the way of me seeing a team that gets better and better each year, except for the fallback in 2006.
6. Almost everybody in this thread that is commenting on Tech has not seen them play this year, but I have.
7. Tech's D won't look as good against Texas as it did the first 2 weeks, but Texas sure isn't going to shut down Tech, either.
8. I went into the year thinking Tech might be lucky to play Texas early because the UT guys won't be up to full speed yet and even thought that might override throwing Potts in there early, but I now think that Tech's new starters might have enough a growth curve this year that it might be Texas that is lucky to play Tech this early. On the other hand, I do think the early game helps keep Tech under the radar more.
1. I know all about the revenge factor, but that factor has been tainted on several fronts. Texas is like a 17 point favorite, so it's not like the 'horns have been given every reason this year to be stomping around mad about their next opponent.
4. There is nothing Tech wants to do more than beat Texas again. Contrary to popular belief, I think Tech will be more focused on beating Texas than the 'horns will be to beat Tech because it's in Austin, you're #2, we're unranked, and everybody has you in the Title Game.
You can't possibly be serious about either of those.
Texas was a dropped interception and a missed tackle at the end of that game away from playing Florida in the National Championship. Every Texas player on that teams remembers Tech fans rushing the field not once but twice and shattering their dreams of playing in a title. If you had to list the games that Texas players, fans, and coaches wanted to win most on the schedule and by way of a monumental beat down it would be the Tech game.
Every single Texas player remembers this moment and you can guarantee that it will be the butt of many speeches and pre-game talks this week. http://jayjanner.files.wordpress.com/2008/11/jwj-ut-tech-12.jpg
I hardly think Tech's desire to beat a top ranked team even comes close to the desire Texas players have to avenge the team that knocked them out of the Big XII championship and the National Title. You are delusional if you think Tech has more to play for in this game.

Just a reminder, Texas was ranked #4 in the nation before getting whacked by K State in Manhattan and then beaten by a$m in '06. If there ever were two teams I was certain they would be prepared for, it was KState /a$m in '07. They suck at revenge, so I hope they are perpaerd ni other ways.
That picture of Colt is a really really cool one. The look of shock/disappointment is a great shot(although I'd not like to see it again). it is a bit big however.

I was there. It was loud, but DKR can be louder if it wants to just because of the sheer number of people. I don't know how loud it will get and I'm not confident it will be louder than it was at Tech last year but I think, given the circumstances, it most certainly can happen. The problem at DKR is a lot of the seats are filled with old people who won't stand there and scream the entire game. The student sections will be loud as **** near the end zone opposite the godzillatron though, you can be sure of that. I don't think the sustained volume will be as loud as at Tech though, I don't think anyone in the stadium stopped screaming the entire game, not even for a second.

That was the loudest I have ever heard one group of people at one time. For a 53K seat stadium I wasn't expecting it to the be that loud. But even for Rice this weekend and sitting on top of the south end zone building I could barely hear myself talk. I like that. When the opposing team is in that south end zone I bet they have a hard time doing anything. Pretty soon the north will be too with 6,000 seats being added.

Seriously though...Does it really matter? I mean if we put a number on it and say Jones last season was a "10" for loudness on a scale of 1-10 and DKR is an "8" or "9" for example...How the hell does 1 or 2 spots matter to ones ears?
I think loud is loud...whether its an 8 or a 10...The only obvious time it would matter is if one was a 10 and the other is a 2 or 3 or 4...And I dont believe that will be the case at all with DKR on Saturday.
And just for the record bro...I'm not jumping on you...I'm just speaking in general.

I understand. My point being, how many 50k seat stadiums do you know that are as loud as huge stadiums like DKR? I think we all agreed here that they are similar in that department.
I think Tech can handle the noise just fine. Hand signals, baby, hand signals. :D

Depends, I guess, on whats at stake as far as the team being played and the configuration has alot to do with the sound as well, types of fans also play a role, drunk or not drunk also affects it.:D

I agree that it is bound to be louder total volume with all the extra bodies. I doubt it matches Lubbock per capita, but it will be loud. I wonder if it will match what OU had vs. Tech. I think it all depends upon if Texas can get a big lead, but even still I think UT fan wouldn't blow the roof off like OU did.

when tech came to norman, it was unbelievably loud. gonna be hard to top that. tech came into norman as the #2 or #3 team in the nation right? now tech isn't even ranked...that'll probably take off some of the steam of the crowd, but probably not much. either way, it's going to be loud as hell at DKR...

Thread went to suck as soon as we started arguing of the relative loudness of stadiums. Bottom line, it's gonna be loud at DKR, but that's the least of Tech's worries. The biggest worry is a QB making his third career start behind a revamped OL against the number two team in the country, with some of the conference's best pass rushers and DBs. That's the worry.

Exactly. Tech was #2, had the respect of the crowd and the team. It got ugly and OU wanted to score style points to make a better case for the Big 12 Title Game.

I will acknowledge that 'ol Will might have a few tricks up his sleeve, but so far Tech is better at:
Run D
Passing D
Total D
Scoring D
Sacks
Tackles For Loss
and others I don't care to add to the list, but so far Tech is top 30 in all of those.
Considering Tech gives up fewer sacks than Texas has so far and Tech is very high in sacks and tackles for loss, Colt might want to watch his back, too!:D

Eh, Brad is undefeated this season I believe...through two or three games anyway.:D
Yes sir....Bob left Sloppell for the pressure cooker in Brownwood...I think he won his first two and then got absolutely hammerd by the Yellowjackets last week. Bob is a good coach and I think he will do good things at Brownwood..I hated him being at Sloppell.
Graham is doing OK so far, but was terrible last year.
Yes, Brownwood won a couple tough games and got hammered last week. I kept laughing at the Brownwood radio announcer. He made sure he kept reminding people that the QB and another guy got hurt, but what got me was him reading the stats at halftime and saying stuff like:
"Stephenville has 77 yards rushing, but it seems like a lot more!"
"They didn't call Stephenville for a penalty in the first half, but we have like 6 procedure penalties"
He either read off something and said "These stats can't be right" or didn't have the stat and said something like "Who cares about these stats?"
When Stephenville went up by 3 TD's he said, "That pretty much does it now!"
I will say he's not quite a funny as the Longview guy that does all the hollering/crying/excuse making!:D

BTW,
I'll warn you knuckleheads now. You probably won't see me on here spouting off as soon as the game is over. Every officer and Senior NCO in our group is required to go to the Air Force Ball on Saturday Night. It lasts from 6-12 and I'll leave as soon as I can before 12, but I'll miss almost all or all of the game. I love the Air Force, but I get tired of missing football and hockey games I have tickets to (I wasn't going to the Texas game this year) because of stuff like the Air Force Ball, annual awards ceremonies, Air Shows, and hurricane standby. Of course another deployment will make me miss the Olympics and NBA All-Star Game.

Right, thats Potts with a stronger arm throwing to Lewis/Swindall/Zou/Leong.
Our offense has reloaded and it was obvious tonight.
Do not forget that Potts last meaningful game was being on the receiving end of a 52-0 slaughter against Southlake Carroll, while playing for Abilene; which has scarred him for life.

What's the story regarding the injuries especially at the DE spot?
Ra'jon Henley is out for 3 weeks and one of the 2nd stringers, Ryan Haliburton, will not make the trip this week. The two starters are Brandon Sharpe and Daniel Howard. They have been doing a pretty good job, IMO. Just not much depth at all at that position.
Franklin Mitchem, starting strong safety, is out.
Detron Lewis sat out the first day of practice earlier this week but has practiced full pads everyday since. All indications are that he is back to 100%.

Rajon Henley was a beast at Galveston Ball, dude was on some bad teams, but he was a man among boys..messed up his elbow or shoulder in like '05 and missed 4 or 5 games and still put up full season like numbers that year. Impressive player for sure.

Tell 'em to turn somebody into a DE. I can't believe Tech is down to ONE non true freshman DE this week. Williams went to the NFL, 2 guys flunked out, 2 guys got hurt this week, and now Sharpe has been suspended for a game by the University.
I don't know what Tech is going to do on D, but I sure expect them to have to win a shootout if they're going to win. I already thought it would be the best Tech win ever if they could pull it out. Now I know it would be the best. This is crazy!

I'm pretty sure that's what mad dog would like if he didn't work out a day in his life.

screw musberger and thanks for Kirby acknowledging Coach Ruff's improvement on the D.
I would like to see the blitz stepped up though. McCoy will get on track and when he does, rushing 4 will not cut it.

Ruff has lost 40 pounds since this time last year. See Bennie Wylie.

announcers are off for the second half.
that was a low blow with the one-second comment towards the Horns.
refs botched the last play, but it's better than getting Potts killed( Kindle was free)

Bird is playing hard tonight.
VERY nice to see that.
When they gonna call Chykie Brown for the arm bar on Zou?
He does it every freaking play.

over all, I thought the officials were good.
They are so geared towards protecting the QB, I absolutely understand how the half ended.
(But it would have been cool as hell to get a freebie 60 yard td)
Didn't like The comment by the announcers about running up stats. You gotta be kiddin me! Stats don't win games, TDs do!
