I think the Cougars will give the Owls all they can handle and then some. Hopefully Tommy Bowman will be back.

You know Coug, I give you all the respect for your opinion. But, I seriously doubt the Coogs will put up 35 on the Owls "D". I mean the same D'Ville team that put it on Permian only manged 3 against that "D". All be it, only in a quater and half, but D'Ville got two turnovers in Garland's half of the field and still only managed the 3. I was at the game and D'Ville didn't show much chance of scoring much more than that. I see this game much closer than that and Cooper will do good to put up 20.

If the Coogs win it will more like 20-17 and I'm that confident they can put that many on Garland. Good luck to both teams. It should be a good one.

Jared Barnett throws 2 picks that go the other way to cost his team the game.

Abilene Cooper 24 Garland 20

Barnett is just too inconsistent to win vs good football teams because he has a very low football IQ and can not read defenses.

The K.A.W.C. is gone from the Owl offense they should revoke their G's from their helemets (like they did in 01 vs Naaman Forest) as they are an embarrassment to the tradition.

You guys kill me. Its ridiculous. I don't know enough about Cooper to make and informed argument about this game (other than that we beat them last year), so I won't... not as if that stops most of you. I'll be a fan and take the Owls, hoping that they have fixed the problems that were so evident last week in all phases of their game.

Pressure.
Coppell put pressure on HP and it paid off. HP put pressure on Coppell and he was able to run away from it or step through it. Depends upon how good the pressure is, and if it keeps contain.

We will be without a couple of key starters on D this game, both would help get Qb pressure, they were suspended for being idots after the LH game. Kind of scary, our D is vulnerable in the middle part of the LB and secondary drop zones.
Looking forward to District play.

Cooper has a good Oline, a good rushing attack and a smart, veteran QB who can hurt you with his arm and his legs....he's not a threat to take it the distance running but he can get away from pressure and move the chains. He reads defenses well, only remember him throwing one ill advised pass. he did get a little rattled once AHS started blitzing him but overall I was impressed with the kid.
I was also impressed with the Cooper D, although they couldn't contain the AHS O speed they played well.
Hard hitting Garland should be another good test for the Coogs in this killer predistrict schedule Spradlin has lined up for his boys....Lewisville Hebron next week:eek:

This will be my last post. ( I know you are all sad) I am an Owl fan through and through. I love this program and I love this tradition and I love these kids. I will root for them and pick them up when idiots on this board will tear them down. When I got on here I thought it'd be nice to have some good, intelligent conversation with other fans. I have been very disappointed and now I see why I was told to stay away from not only commenting, but reading this crap. With the exception of a few, these conversations have been ridiculous. I get rattled by uninformed, yet unrestrained comments. Barnett just seems to be all you guys want to talk about. If you think I am a coach or a parent you are wrong.

Sorry you feel that way. I, too, am an Owl fan through and through. I, too, love the program, the players, and the tradition. Maybe, in a perfect world, no one would ever talk about players by name. However, I dont think thats too realistic. I am against harsh, mean spirited or personal attacks, but fans are going to criticize play and speak their minds. Does it sometimes get out of hand? Sure it does. And, when it does, those who do it should be called on it. However, it isnt reasonable to expect everyone to just throw flowers and lolipops all the time. We are fans. This is a fan board. We watch every game, we love the program, and we are far from uninformed. We all hope for better things this week. We'll be there, cheering madly and living and dying with each play. We'll be exhasted when its over. And we will come on here and express, in our opinion, what we saw.

I'm sorry to see you leave...there is so much you can learn here.

If being honest about the play of a kid, from a person with no dogs in this fight, is too much for you, then maybe you should be gone.

See, we talk football here. We love our teams. We are critical of the bad things and complimentary of the good things.

There have been few good things about Garland football this year.....there is no cohesive flow.

Whether you like it or not...the play of Barnett has been less than inspired. If he can't step up and make plays, he will get replaced by A.P. and his schooly is in jeopardy.....I'm not being mean...I'm being honest.

I'm an Owl fan....I want him to be successful. When he got hurt last year, I was probably one of the sickest people at the stadium that night....I had such high expectations for the rest of the season. The expectations are as high this year as he is older and more experienced. If I'm disappointed by what I see, I can only assume that Iowa State is disappointed too.

I hope he gets it turned around, for the teams sake and for his.

Since I can't make the trip to Tyler, I might go to this game. Looks like it's going to be a real battle of whether the Cooper O or the Garland D is stronger. I think the game being in Abilene, Cooper scores a few times and the d holds enough to hang on to the win IMO.

And therein lies trhe problem that may haunt this team all season.....too many individuals and not enough people thinking about the good of the team.

The 1999 team won State because players made sacrifices for the sake of the team.....they played positions they didn't really want to becasue the coach asked them to for the team.

Dante Hart, the single season rushing city champion, was a D-1 linebacker prospect.....he had played occasional RB in mop up role, but never as a front lien guy.

Coach asked him to be the stating linebacker because he didn't have faith in what he had there at that point and Dante brought one thing to the team that was lacking.....a tough inside runner to make the outside stuff work....the rest is history..... he will forever go down, with people who know, as possibly the main reason that team won state, outside that ponderous offensive line rotation.

If we can't find people who will sacrifice.....we won't do much this year....just like in years where we were loaded with talent, and selfish players.

Also, if Barnett can't take a little criticism, he's not a D-1 prospect anyway.

We probably need to slow down a little bit on posting inflamatory stuff about the kids. A little criticism regarding the game or the on field performance is one thing, but we may need to remember that these are kids, not NFL or NCAA players. I'm not sure their personal feelings and what other students are saying about them should be fair game for this board. Not trying to call anyone out, just making a suggestion...

As for the game, I'll go with the Owls, 17-14...

FYI, From a former Owl player, while everyone is bashing our QB, did anyone notice that Barnett had 10 passes hit receivers in the hands and dropped last week. He can't throw it and catch it. We have to catch the football. How much do we miss Updyke! Owls win 28-14!

There is a difference between bashing and relating an opinion.....I hope he does well...I want to win.....but there is no question that the player we are seeing, thus far this season, is not the same player that led the team in 7 on 7 and started in 2008....

My viewpoint is FACT not opinion. We can't expect this kid to throw and catch the football. It's a team sport! Us Monday morning QB's have to sit back and realize that neither Brady or Manning can lead a team if their recievers are not catching the ball. If you want to truly evaluate a QB, look at his TD/Int ratio and fumbles lost (From Bill Walsh's book) That will tell you if he is losing games and/or not putting his team in position to win. For our QB, it's 3-1 with 0 fumbles plus 2 rushing td's. If your QB is making mistakes and turning over the ball, your team will lose. If your TEAM is not playing well as a unit, the team will lose (that's coaching). In your opinion, which one is it...the QB or the team? If your answer is the QB, make a change and see if it gets better. It's that simple! Owls 28-14!

A great game! Cooper had 30 -13 lead with about 8:00 to play. I was sitting in the Garland crowd and they were not happy with their team. Garland scores and recovers onside kick. They score on first play to take momentum and close to 30-27...and get their crowd back into the game!! Cooper fumbles kick off but recover. Coogs get long run called back on hold to kill that drive. Garland connects on long pass to inside the Cooper 15. Get 1st and goal from three. Cooper Stuffs two runs up the gut but on third Garland puts it in for the winning TD. Cooper moves the ball to the Garland 40 against a soft prevent and then heaves 2 unsuccessful hail marys to end game.
Both teams played well. Garland QB missed two wide open receivers behind the Cooper D and had one dropped by a wide open receiver who was all alone. QB did hit long one when it counted....receiver was covered but went up and got the reception. Both defenses were bringing the wood....all in all a very entertaining game.
Congrats to the Owls for a great comeback win. Hats off to the Coogs as well.

Congrats to the Owls on a great comeback win. The Cougars played Garland toe-to-toe all night and just fell apart late in the game. The Cougars have been burned by the onsides kick several times this season - got to work on that! I think the Coogs will grow from this and hopefully have another great run in district and the Class 4A playoffs!

Loved the atmosphere at the stadium. Abilene ISD and the city of Abilene were great hosts. Cooper is a good team - Great O line play, very well coached, poised and sharp. I think they will be heard from in December...

The owls showed something I have not seen in them this year, a little HEART. I thought that when they got down 30-13 they would give up and this would turn into a blow out, but they picked up their game and fought back. CONGRATS OWLS on a big WIN:notworthy

I could not go, but those guys on 95.3 THE RANGE did a great jub calling the game, with a total Garland bias. I saw some video from the Abilene paper site. Cooper looked big and fast. I will be following them this year... Go Coogs! Sounded like somebody turned on the lights in the 3rd qtr. If this game can be an inspiration for the Owls maybe we will have another interesting fun year again.
Mr. Go, waiting for your take

There is a difference between bashing and relating an opinion.....I hope he does well...I want to win.....but there is no question that the player we are seeing, thus far this season, is not the same player that led the team in 7 on 7 and started in 2008....

....but it's still early......I'm just saying what I see at this point.
" how do you like me now" Barnett

Well, it just went to 30-13 with a little over 10 minutes left in the game and we were getting ready to leave for the long ride home with the feeling that nothing had changed...the team was flat....the offense was flat....the defense looked uninterested...Barnett had flashes of "finding it" but it was just plain bad.

Then we started the drive....moved quickly and crisply....scored.

We lined up for onside kick with 7 minures left.....got it......one pass.....scored.....30-27......baby we got a game.....what a catch by A.P.

We stopped them.....got the punt.....and completed one heck of a 42 yard pass...what a catch......a few plays later......we're up by 34-30.

They get the ball.....move it steadily down the field, but the clock becomes the enemy....they throw two bombs in the last 10 seconds from about 43 yards out.....but nothing.....Garland won one of the most incredible games and 4th quarters I've ever seen.....it was certainly worth the drive and the drive home didn't seem as long as it appeared it would be in the early 4th quarter.

Abilene Cooper is everything I feared they were.....nice team.....you will certainly make waves in December.

First time to Shotwell....I was impressed.....nice stadium and nice hosts. You could tell that there were big games played there...you could feel it.

Questions...is Shotwell on it's original ground....was it reconfigured or was it alway in the semi-bowl configuration.....when was it built and when did the renovation occur, if there was one?

As for Barnett....it was a mixed bag.....he looked good and bad throughout the first three quarters, but there was no consistancy or flow.....good plays would be followed up with bad or non plays.....there was a lack of "flow" to the offense.

But then the 4th quarted happened and it was like the Barnett we saw at Lake Highlands suddenly was reborn....he made decisive decisions, took the ball crisply, made sure throws, nice flowing runs off the zone read.....in other words, everything we have been expecting from him all season.

The difference I saw was that maybe they got a little success throwing the ball downfield....that was the big thing about last years team....they could get vertical with success when they needed it.

I don't know if the coaches were calling different, or if there was just finally a hook-up between Barnett and the receivers who had been dropping the passes that did get to them, but it all worked.....everything worked in the 4th quarter.

I hope that this is "the wake-up moment" for this team....the moment that they realize what potential they have. We will see now as we move into district play.

Through the 3rd quarter of last nights game, my assessment of Barnett had been spot on.....then his performance changed in the 4th quarter and his potential and expectations were realized with his consistancy and ability to string plays together and not just the occasional good play.....he had it going on in the 4th quarter.

I hope that this is a trend and his confidence is back now....I hope we see the realization of the potential that the Iowa State scouts saw when they offered him last year, for the rest of this season.

Go Barnett.

Go Owls.

Thanks for the nice words about Shotwell. We are proud of it. Shotwell was built in 1959 and sits on its original ground. It has been the same basic configuration for as long as I can remember. The AISD has been doing continuous renovations for several years now. Turf, scoreboard, fieldhouse, expanded restroom facilities, paving the parking lots and reworking traffic flow, landscaping and the newest additions this year was lighting. Now if we can get a new pressbox....

Yes, I've heard many accounts of how nasty the pressbox area is! But, thanks to the citizens of Abilene they voted down the bond issue that would have been used to finance more renovations to Shotwell.

Barnett is a sweet kid,but who let's him play QB.The boy has no clue what he's doing.Doesn't know how to make a pass, distance is off.
But abilene played a very good game, had a better team than I thought. My daughter told me that in the stands, kids were yelling nasty things at Barnett, and that when players went down, everyone was like "I hope it's Barnett" That is sad when your own school mates want you to be hurt so another player(A.P) can replace you

G-Owls 00, it's obvious that you are not a fan of Barnett. You must be a disgruntle ex-girlfriend or Adrians best friend. Barnett was 13 of 16 in the first half. Adrians fumble of a Barnett pass killed a drive and gave the Coogs a short field to score a td. Morgan dropped a deep ball that hit him in the hands that killed a drive. If you are a true Owl fan like the rest of us, you would know that Barnett is the best QB in Garland.

Barnett showed us what he is capable of; in fact, in the 4th quarter, the whole offense showed what it can do. Jared was not the problem in the first 3 quarters, either. He was pretty much on target, but was being let down by his receivers. That finally changed with the clutch catches in the 4th quarter.

I loved the toss sweeps and WR screens. We also had an effective running game. Defense gave up a lot of yards up the middle; lets not forget that we had two top defensive players not playing this week who would normally be in that middle area. The D will be fine.

All in all, just what we needed going into district.

I sat on the Garland side with all the Garland fans. Man you guys travel well....really good turn out. Garland fans were loud and for the most part had class. I did see a few idiots....grown men.....talking trash to some of the kids in the Cooper band... there's a few in every crowd ain't there? Overall I really enjoyed watching the game with y'all!
Y'all don't want no part of that team from the north side of Abilene tho:D!!
2008: Abilene 20, Cooper 13
Garland 28, Cooper 14

2009 Abilene 49, Cooper 37
Garland 34, Cooper 30

How about lets just meet in the playoffs.:D I would love for Warren to schedule some different pre-district opponents such as Garland and would love to see a game at Jerry World. The only other time I can remember that we almost played y'all is in 99, if we had beaten South Grand Prairie in the 4th round, we would have played y'all the next round.

I would love to see AHS and Garland play.

That AHS-SGP PO game was a great one. I thought we had it won but SGP rallied to go ahead and then stopped us on a 4th and short to end it.
