Dave Campbell's Most Absurd Oversight?

Vote me in for one beginning to have serious concerns about said magazine's knowledge of Texas football.

I realize we're talking 5A football here - but I think Campbell's slight of Gilmer at the 3A level this year is beyond absurd.

Gilmer had the best 3A team I've personally ever seen last year - with barely a hint of a close game until the final with multiple D1 signees in their backfield alone. The state title win over Jasper (49-47) was again the greatest display of skill I've ever seen at this level.

While Gilmer is by no means coming back fully loaded, 2-3 members of that talented backfield/wr's are coming back - and Gilmer is certainly at that level where they are now cocky and reloading, vs. rebuilding.

Where does Campbell list Gilmer? Who really knows - Campbell does not even mention Gilmer in the Top 25 at the 3A level!! Say what??!!?? :confused:

Wait - it gets worse. Campbell lists Gilmer to finish THIRD in their district - which granted is a tough one. But, wait -- just how many district games has Gilmer lost in the last five years combined?

Yeah I dont' think i'm going to be buying one this year..........and for the future i'm going to wait and hear how it is before I buy one.

If I could find one in a store up this way, I'd buy it. I sent someone in Texas money last year to mail it to me.

If they have a huge staff, then I think the criticism is warranted, but if there are only two-or-three guys doing all classifications, then there are going to be some errors when trying to forecast all of Texas.

You ought to see the magazine that previews Louisiana football. It's embarrassing.

The rankings i hear are done by Carl Padilla...who used to have the Pad Poll.

I used to check his rankings out and they were horrible even before he was at Texas Football.

that reminds me of the issue previewing the 2003 season where they did not predict carroll to win its district even after a state championship in 2002. The kicker is that they picked The Colony to beat Carroll for the district championship. That year Carroll was district champs at 15-1 and then The Colony I think went 1-9

They also left 3A champ Abilene Wylie out of the Top 25 rankings. :eek:

No Garland in the Top 25 in a season we expect to be a better team with 11 returning starters and 38 returning lettermen after beating the 4A Champ, and losing to the 5A champ in the playoffs. Rediculous.

Yea the rankings in the magazine are beyond absurd. This site, (which I think does a terrific job in researching and posting correct ranking/perdictions) had Garland ranked #10 which I think is just about right because like GoOwls said they had some great wins last year against good teams and lost to the State Champs, but Campbell's doesnt even have Garland ranked!! But we never get any respect from that magazine.

I totally agree with you favpack.

That team last year, I was able to see twice. And listen to on the radio several times.

Got to see them beat up on Mount Vernon (I think thats who it was..cant remember...Whoever they faced in the 1st round at Lobo Stadium) and kill Synder in the Semi Finals at Texas Stadium (that was a fun day got to see Lp vs SLC in Waco hurried and got over to Texas Stadium with 5 minutes left in the Marshall/Ennis game and stayed for the Gilmer/Synder game)

Also heard them againist Spring Hill and Jasper

Boy those boys were good. Definately deserve credit. I've come to the conclusion that Dave Campbell...doesnt know what hes talking about half the time
