Ali hands down.......Love him or hate him he stood out in his era. So much more than boxing.
If you were not a Die Hard Basketball fan, you may have heard of Jordan..most kids today grew up watching him and think thats when basketball started...the were deprived of see "Showtime" with the Lakers, The REAL Celtics, the Bad Boys and players like Dr. J
Same goes for Payton and the Babe...if you're not a Die hard fan, you probably wouldnt recognize them if they were alive standing next to you..
Ali can step off the plane in any part of the world and you know who he is. Like I said....read about him, check out the documentries....it was soo much more than just boxing.

That's a damned good case for Ali, and because of it I can't think of anyone better.

Whenever this topic comes up, I always wonder where Bo Jackson could have been on this kind of list. I think he could have been at the very top, if not alone at the top.

on that note, if we're talking just pure "athletic" prowess, wherever Bo goes, I'd have to put Herschel Walker right there with him. I mean, just look at this beast...

I really like the point made about Ali. I do not believe the list should be just about athletes because dada4w makes a good point.
Greatest of all time debate list:

Einstein
Jesus
U.S. Military

My answer is actually none of the above.
I believe Pele is the greatest of all time.
He led Brazil to three World Cups and scored over 1,200 goals in his soccer career. To give a little perspective on that, French national Thierry Henry just became a legend at the very well respected London pro club Arsenal for scoring over 120 goals in his career there so far. Henry is 28.
Pele was only 17 years old when he won the first of three World Cups with Brazil. That is unheard of in soccer and any other team sport, and might not ever be done again at the World Cup. That's the equivalent of Jordan leading the Bulls to an NBA title during his junior year at Laney High School. Muhammad Ali wasn't even Muhammad Ali yet at 17.
World Cups are only held once every four years like the Olympics, so the huge majority of players only get a chance to play in one or two if they are lucky enough to be selected by their country.
Pele's instantly recognizeable to a huge majority in just about any country except maybe the United States, but he did play some here professionally for the New York Cosmos.
Michael Jordan was my hero growing up. Hard to argue against Jordan, Ali and Pele as the three most dominant athletes of all time.
This quote from the London Times after one of he and Brazil's World Cup title victories pretty much says it all....
"How do you spell Pele? G-O-D." The London Times

 Who the Hell is Pele???
Just kidding....good argument for him too, but ask the "Average" or "Casual" fan who he is and they might look confused......You just may have exposed Pele to some people on this sight for the first time.:D

For sure...but outside the US he's as recognizeable as Muhammad Ali, Jordan's Jumpman, The Golden Arches and the Nike Swoosh.
Here are a couple pictures of him...
