Got this thread idea from my recent post in the 4-4-3 thread.
How many of you follow teams in which FB is really a spot on your depth chart and not (at most) a part time job that your big backup RB fills in short yardage situations? Anyone out there watching teams that still have a fullback as part of the base offensive set?
I'm sure somewhere in Texas someone is....

This thread is very interesting.
First of all according to me the FB is an underestimated role.
I think it is very difficult to find a team that has a FB at the base, less than there is a FB very strong technically and physically.
The fullback does a dirty job...really. He opens the holes, he hits d-line protects QB etc ... anyway I do not see that as a part time job whilst at the same time it's hard to imagine it as a reference point for a large part of the offensive schemes.

Not many offenses have a fullback as the feature player, yet it was not too long ago that the FB was an integral part of most teams' base offense. Cowboys fans will remember Daryl "Moose" Johnston as a key cog in the offense that featured the triplets. He was also a safety valve for Aikman on passing plays and was a fanstastic reciever out of the backfield. The Pro Bowl features a fullback position because of him.
Nearly every offense we played against in high school featured a fullback-- running out of either the base power I or an off-set I as the base formation. As I said in another post, the inside linebackers in the 4-4-3 defense we ran were taught to key off of the full-back to determine where the play was going. Your first step was always determined by the direction of the FB. And in our own base offense the FB got significant carries--not as many as the HB, but there were several designed plays for him.

What is CP's base offensive set? The standard I?
Great reporting by cpfan. It's true.
As matter of fact I saw some highlights of last season of College Park Team and some stats of this year (how many rb??!?!? :D ). I think that more or less they still have the same playbook.
In fact they use a lot of their FB. They play a standard I Form if I've seen well from the video.
The FB is mainly used for fake run and as receiver on the average length after a play action on rb.

In the wing T offense the fullback is basically the primary ballcarrier in that he gets more carries than the HB most of the time. At least in Burleson's offense it has been that way. Every year since we ran it the fullback has gotten more caries than the HB or QB.

Trinity has used a fullback since Lineweaver came in. Mostly blocks, but carries the ball 4 or 5 times a game. They also sneak him out of the backfield and throw it to him every once in a while.

They also use him for FAKE PUNTS, where he takes the snap and runs it 28 yards and gets a game saving 1ST down!!! GO GONZO!!!:notworthy:notworthy:notworthy

It seems ol' Permian used a lot of the Fb back in the day..esp in the 80's. A buddy of mine Chris Comer played FB for yall back in those days and excelled carrying the ball playing FB. That is def. old school hard nosed Football....damn I miss that.

A lost art, but my Trojans still have it in their soup!
I would love for us to have #33 Wawa at fullback! Instant nightmare for any defense.
When his brother Mao carried the ball he didnt just break tackles, he ran through them with such an ease. And Ive heard his brother is a more aggressive runner, and loves to punish. At Euless Jr. High, it took five or six kids to get him down.
Hes my dream fullback next year 6'2 240ish, and can move, look out:)

Trinity, Katy, CedarPark, Haltom, I'm sure there are others.
Your fullback is more than just a battering ram, he fills a critical roll as part of a zoning unit. His blocks also tend to be the most difficult as he's having to cancel out a linebacker or safety in space. I rate the qualities of a good fullback in the following order - descending in importance
1. Intelligent
2. Quick
3. tough
4. Powerful

It is really sad to see the Fullback postition basically going away. It isn't very widely utulized anymore by high school and college teams.
Some NFL teams are having hard times finding true Fullbacks because there are not many out there. Most teams end up converting a TE or something like that.
How many FB were taken in the draft this year?

The funny thing is I think the veer will be making a comeback with more and more shotgun/pistol sets. 10 bucks says most people are going to think its a new high powered run system with only a few knowing its a relic

I don't mind the shotgun. It has been used for years. But to be in the shotgun every play isn't real football. Throwing the ball every down isn't real football. The spread basically eliminated the TE position in most cases. A TE isn't supposed to line up wide. He is supposed to be right next to the tackle or guard.

I hear you I played for Katy Back in the Day and we only threw 4 to 5 times per game out of the I.
I miss the Use of a TE and an FB in Football today. I also miss a long lost formation called "the huddle" that used to take place between plays.
That calling it in from the sideline in theory is good but in pratice takes longer and dumbs down the playbook.

Im really looking forward to the Katy North Shore game this year
so Far it has been
2008 NS 10-6
2009 KT 9-7
Last year it was supposed to be on ESPN or something like that but got dropped in favor of a higher scoring game (since those tyoes of scores arent entertaining)
but I have always enjoyed a good defensive grudgematch.

I do like seeing high scoring games but I love those 9-7 or 10-6 games. Or even something like 7-3.
I love me a good defensive grudgematch. I am a defensive guy. I plan to coach it someday.

You clearly haven't watched Abilene High's offense since about 2001 or so.
AHS operates a multiple spread offense. When I was there, we had several packages that had a TE on the line, in many cases two of them. This year they also added the I-formation, though Tony Curtis wouldn't fit the traditional definition of a FB. That being said, he's built like a bull and will knock you on your butt if you aren't prepared for him!

I thought that some of what Abilene ran looked like that.
often times it is not what you run, but how well you execute what you run.
