View Full Version : Which DFW teams surprised you in Week 0?

I have 4 to give props to----but some questions still exist about these:
Hebron (they beat a very highly touted Wylie team soundly)
Garland Lakeview (huge offensive #'s-----or is Frisco that bad?)
Lake Highlands (are they really good or is Mesquite down?)
Berkner (there starters have outscored South Grand Prairie 80-0 the past 2 years; SGP scored 19 points against the Rams subs last Fri.
I have two---
1. Hebron- They went on the road to a very tough place to play and beat up on Wylie pretty good.
2. Duncanville- They traveled down to SA and beat Permian with all their tradition and spoiled the return of Gary Gaines.
By the way, Frisco is that bad.

Duncanville was by far the biggest surprise for me. I thought they would be good this year. But going up against an OP team bringing back some talent and with Gaines back in the fold to fire them up I thought they would put a lot in that game.

I can speak for Lake Highlands and Berkner, since those are the two games I attended this week. Berkner looked great, plain and simple. The defense was absolutely dominant as I thought it would be. The offense added a new wrinkle with Aric Stock getting some reps at QB and Lawrence Williams moving to WB. Stock can actually throw the ball a little, and runs the option as well as Lawrence. He's not as fast, but he's a little bigger and tougher I thought.
For Lake Highlands, the offense, although they had a bunch of mental mistakes and penalties, was awesome to watch. Zorn is just a stud and Des Roland, now starting fulltime at RB, is a hoss. They just wear you down 7 yards at a time, take all the time off the clock and score almost every possession. I believe Mesquite stopped them on the first drive and then Zorn got hit on a deep pass that was intercepted, and the rest of the game, the Skeeters had no chance. The defense was surprisingly good. They were faster than last year and even though they lost two really good leaders in Jones and McCann, were better. This was all done without James Duke, the starting FS also. I hope he's back soon, because they have a few good passing teams coming up with Horn, GTown and Skyline their next 3. That's going to be a really tough stretch.

Agreed.......Duncanville was the biggest surprise considering top competition.

I would say:
Hebron - I expected a close game with Wylie but I did expect a Hebron win.
Flower Mound - I expected Plano East to win that game by a Field Goal. Congrats Jags.
Another vote for Duncanville.
Did not expect IMAC to beat Plano.

Duncanville for sure. Practically the whole game with their backup QB. One or two plays different and I would have had to consider Desoto. People better watch out for those guys.

Wylie...really expected a close, hard fought game with Hebron. The Pirates made to many mistakes...5 turnovers and several penalties. Can't do that against a very good team like Hebron and expect to win.
Hebron...had heard they would be down somewhat this year compared to last. It did not appear to me that there has been much of a drop off from 08.
Plano...did not see the loss to IMAC coming.

DeSoto. Coming off a 6-6 season and jumping out to a 28-7 lead over CHill and playing and giving the effort they did against a highly ranked and hyped team as CHill in the first game is an accomplishment, they can only build and getter better as the season progresses. A very impressive and talented DeSoto team. CHill gave up 41 points in its first game and will not meet another team this good and talented as DeSoto.:)

another vote for Duncanville. They are going to be like Desoto and CHILL in another year or two. OR, maybe it won't take that long!

True....Trinity, whom they play on Sept. 12, is average at best.

Hebron- Maybe better than last year.
Allen- lost to a 4a, must have made a lot of mistakes they will be OK
Permian- Didn't look real solid in the trenches
Abilene- Taking up where they left off last year- great offense
Heritage- Solid performance left no doubt- class at the end of the game not to run up the score!
SGP- nothing going this year.

Only because they broke up our old district...........That would be one slamming district if it was still together.:)

Trinity? Duncanville?
You guys need a new coach in a bad way. That guy is horrible. You guys still happy you ran the old coach out of town?

We don't need a new coach, you will see in the end. Keep your opinions to yourself, our kids love him, and will go out for him. Yes, we are still happy the old coach is gone! He is catching it at Katy now. Neither one needs to be criticized though. But people like you start making comments, because you all think you can always do better. We are happy with our coach, and if you are not, so what!

He just got hired last week! Or am I confused.
Second, seems like a lot of parents at Desoto started making comments, and they were false accusations, because they thought THEY could do better. Or is that not true?
Take off the eyeshades and see what is real. The coaching staff made several bonehead decisions in that game. period. Doesn't mean that can't correct it, they are human too, it is the first game. Doesn't mean they are forever awful, just means they need to up their game. But to deny it completely is just plain .....ostrich.

What did you think of the LH uniforms? I had to go see the eye doctor after that game. I still don't know who played.

No need to feel sorry for our boys. They know what they have and know what they can do. Yes, there were errors on all aspects of the game: coaching, refs, and players. There was fault on all, and they will only learn from their mistakes. Someone told my son that the coach blew that game for you, and my son responded with he didn't we were the ones on the field. He knew what he was doing, and we will always believe in him. So that is why I am defending the coach, the players love him and continue to work for him.
