You know there seem to be a lot of Texas fans who just can't ever seem to give credit to players from A&M even if it's deserved. Most of these "fans" are of the "t-shirt" variety. Even after Reggie had a good game today (albeit in an exhibition vs. dumbed down defenses) there are still Texans "fans" who would say nothing but bad things.
Bumped into a UT grad here in AZ tonight at the bar, and the first thing he said to me after we started talking sports was "dude did you see Reggie today, he was ****** today!"
What I'm getting at is, I get sick of fans from EITHER school who no matter what, find negative things to say about each other. It shows your ignorance. I hate UT, with a passion, but guys like David Thomas and Ahmad Hall were two of my favorite players this year. I love Vince's athletic ability, but the manlove that so many people show for his has made me not like him (just go to the houstontexans.com message board and you'll see what I mean).
Maybe I'm just different, maybe I'm just drunk (which I happen to be right now), but as we'd all like to consider ourselves "educated" football fans, can't we put away the "aggy" and "t.u." crap and just talk x's and o's every now and then?

In a way I dislike all the attention UT got/is getting from winning the NC because we're gonna have so many more T-shirt fans. I wish there was some kind of law that only people who are directly connected with the school could root for it (with the exception of some).

you gotta get through the smacktalk to see who actually knows what the heck they're talking about when it comes to x's and o's.
There's a time for both, and on a message board it seems like we spend more time on the smack, that's true.
Just think if you were talking that way in a sportsbar last night, liquored up. Instead of some messages teasing you about the Aggies, you might have really said something bad and gotten in a "heated" discussion, or worse.
There's some protection in using the board, and people can and do say things that if they were face-to-face, they wouldn't. But the more posts they make, the more it comes out, what they're all about.
I haven't seen a whole lot of Aggies on here defending the Dead Dog Tribe, is there hope in Mudville?

BRING BACK THE HATE
In my opinion, the Bonfire Accident in 1999 and the September 11th attacks or something similar are the only domestic reasons the rivalry should be put aside. If t.u. was to say, play Soviet Russia, or North Korea, or Iran, or China, I would probably root for t.u. and America. It is a rivalry and people need to act like it. I'm not saying ****, pillage and plunder, but at least some sort of dislike.

I'm kind of on the fence, not a place I'm used to beong because I'm usually mostly a "black and white" kind of guy with not much gray area.
First and foremost, I'm a lifelong Longhorn fan, raised in the country and on a farm, not rich, poor as dirt, and I hate any tea except sweet iced tea, and I never sip it, just in nice big gulps. I became a Longhorn fan in 1962, I think, when my dad and I came home from fishing, I was 4 years old, and I turned on the TV and Texas was ahead of Arkansas and ths Hogs scored late anf best Texas. I was crushed that Arkansas had beat my home state, and became an instant Horns fan. It was cemented by watching The Big Shootout live on TV at the age of 10 or so.
It's just fine to be rivals before, during, and after the game and at appropriate times when special ribbing is needed between seasons and to defend your team on boards like this one. However, to not support the teams from your home state in their post-season action is treasonous. Many of the posters on here that advocate the constant hate theory seem to be transplants from other states or very well traveled. They don't know or understand the implied kinship that native Texans, in general, share. It's perfectly acceptable to "hate" each other for the head to head battles, but push comes to shove, we support the folk from the home state in battles against "outsiders". I may resent, in theory, that Reggie McNeal went to A&M instead of UT, and I may give him grief and his fans grief for it, but I support him in his endeavours against other teams, especially out-of-state groups, because the overall success of home state teams is more important than my petty ill wishes against A&M or any other home state school. I don't understand people who, from either A&M or UT, wish ill will against each other in contests against teams other than between themselves. We should show some charachter and lay down our petty differences and support each other, just for that day, at least.
You'll notice that usually I refer to A&M as "aggy", but not in this message, not today. I am ashamed of how we treat our fellow Texans at times. Yes, there is a time to trash talk and have fun with it, which is most all the time, actually, but there is also a time to support each other. I'll be proud of some of you if you show a bit of class, charachter, history, and state pride, when you show that you have learned the spirit of support for each other that all Texans should show for each other.
Good luck to Reggie and all the other seniors from the other schools in Texas, I'll be following and supporting their careers in the pros. Heck, Reggie almost beat my Owls single-handedly in 1999 in our championship season, he has my respect, but he went to A&M, so I'm gonna mess with him, but I'll support him too in his lifelong endeavours because it's the "right" thing to do.
If you think this point of view is sissy, or wussified, grow up and see the big picture like adults do, for a change, or move back to the junk state you came from (see, this is now some trash talk....I'm having fun).
99% of the time, I'll be trashing the aggy, but the 1% that is need for their support, they will be Aggies.

Yes, let's talk "Xs and Os"... now that football season is over. Perhaps this thread should have originated four months ago when it would have actually had a point.
It has been said by myself and numerous other Horn fans on here repeatedly in the past, but apparently our words have, once again, fallen on deaf ears (or blind eyes depending upon how you look at it). While competing for Texas A&M University, an athlete... any athlete... is the enemy. This is the very nature of rivalry. That doesn't mean we can't or don't appreciate what this young man does or what he is able to accomplish, but let's be honest... there has been very little to glow about coming out of B/CS over the last few years. If there was actually a decent team with great playmakers coming out of that area, you would see a different kind of rhetoric emerging from the burnt orange masses. The same way we were able to appreciate and stand in awe of what Adrian Peterson and BJ Symons were able to do despite the fact that they are our rivals. Texas fans appreciate good football. When Texas A&M starts playing good football, maybe then we'll have something to appreciate. Forgive my frankness and honesty there, but if you do not understand that, than I am not your enemy or rival... truth is.
Once the player in question leaves A&M, the rivalry lessens and we all appreciate and root for him as we do anyone from any Texas school. We are Texas and we want to see the entire state represented proudly regardless of their academic institution. You have seen plenty of love and praise for Mr. McNeal come from Horn fans when talking about his days at Lufkin and we will be rooting for him to make it in the NFL at which time we will cheer form him as a Texan. We will do so ignoring the dark four years of his athletic career in which, frankly, there is nothing to cheer about and few things worth remembering (not all his fault mind you).
If you don't understand or can't deal with Texas fans and our praise of and love for Vince Young, then you really don't understand football to begin with and you have no business trying to discuss "Xs and Os." Vince Young is talked about and appreciated the way he is because his is the very essence of football and competition... he is a winner. The same high praise we exalt upon Vince is the same praise USC fans give to Matt Leinart, Miami fans to Ken Dorsey and Nebraska fans to Tommie Frazier... they are all winners thus solidifying their status in a very select pantheon of college football greats regardless of where their post-colligate careers may take them. If you can't understand that, then you truly have my pity because if you don't understand it, it's probably because you have never experienced it.

My thoughts on VY have little to do with him being "a winner" and his football prowess. I'll admit that most of my disgust comes from the Texans fans who continue to boast "If we don't draft Vince Young I'll never be a Texans fan again."
I'm not gonna get into a pissing match with you over this, to be totally honest I don't wanna give the effort. My thread last night was just a little drunken rant about a select few.
One of the reasons this "rivalry" has diminshed to this status is...well, to be truthfully honest...A&M has just flat out sucked, and they've become apathetic to the whole thing.
I fully understand what a "winner" is in college football. Tommie Frazier is perhaps my favorite CFB player of all time, and I have no ties to Nebraska, because he was...to me...the ultimate field general. Looking back, I think Vince is the only player to match his leadership. It's taken a couple weeks go appreciate what Vince did, but it's not his fault, it's a certain group of fans.
Okay now I'm just rambling. jtk you made some good points, I'll acknowledge. I think we agree we just don't know it. I didn't attend either school (TLU grad here), but I've got more ties to A&M than Texas. If A&M could just start winning in ANYTHING anymore, maybe the rivalry can return for me :)

I will cheer for a Texas HS kid that goes out of state and makes it to the NFL.
I will root for any Texas kid in the NFL regardless of what U he attended.
Otherwise, to JTK's point, if they ain't at Tech, they get no love. They are the enemy. You think I like seeing Lubbock kids at UT just because they stayed in state? The list is long and distinguished, but just because they're at a U in Texas doesn't mean I'll cheer for them.
I used to cheer for OU when they were in the Big VIII because of all of the Texas HS kids who spurned UT to go there, I loved it. Now we have to play 'em every year so it's not so fun.
Don't sit there and preach Loyalty or Understanding to someone who has lived out of state. You have NYC guys always talking about hoops. Guys from the midwest( Indiana) talking hoops. I was always arguing with Cali and Fla guys about football. Texas does have the best High school game in the country, doesn't mean in the least bit that I have to cheer for steers and dead dogs. If you never leave the state or see something else, how do you REALLY know we're the best? because Dave Campbell's says so?

I have more A&M ties than Texas ties as well. ;) They are the reason I started cheering for the Longhorns back when I didn't even know what a university was.
I want to further expand my thoughts on Reggie McNeal. I really liked this kid coming out of high school. I was hoping he would chose Texas because at the time, it looked like Vince was Miami bound. Reggie is one of the best high school QBs this state has seen in my opinion. So, I was very disappointed when he chose A&M and I was even more disappointed watching him struggle with a coaching staff and program that just didn't appear to care. I think that rubbed off on Reggie and by the end of this last season you started to see a QB that just didn't care. Stephen McGee does care, but if the coaching staff and attitude there doesn't change, McGee will meet the same slow and agonizing fate as McNeal.
I'm excited to see what pro prospects Reggie has now. I was starting to think that his future was at WR but his recent performance has brought new life into my hopes of seeing him play QB in the NFL. Nobody will deny his talent, but after this season, his attitude is in question and his durability has always been a question. I hope he can stay healthy and land with a good team. If he can, his future is very bright indeed.

I always root for the Texas boys. I hate to see Texas HS players leave the State of Texas and go play at places like USC, Florida, FSU, Miami, SEC schools and ect. But, I can understand that they aint all going to stay in Texas.
When I'm watching other schools outside of Texas.. I usually root for the one that has the most Texas kids on it. (EXCEPT OU !!!):D
In Texas... I dont hate other programs like A&M, Tech and ect. I actually root for them most of the year. Especially Tx Tech, I like them alot more then Tx A&M just because of their underdog "overcheiver" mentality.
I loved seeing TCU win the MWC this season and hope they have great seasons and get a very good Bowl game.
Texas vs Tx A&M... bigtime in-state rivarly that just creates alot of trash talk. Most of those kids had the chance to go to either school and for many of them it came down to Texas or A&M. That kind of adds to the rivalry.
PS.. I loved seeing Sam Houston St and Texas State make long runs in the D-11A playoffs. Two years and two Semi-finals appearences. I would love to see one of the Texas D-11A schools close the deal out with a National title.
It would of been totally cool to see UT and Texas St both win National titles this past season.
As far as the Pro ranks go... (NFL, Arena, CFL ). I always follow the Texas HS kids and hope they do well. Whatever college they went to kind of goes away and its all about State pride and Texas High school kids.

Ahmard Hall ex-marine, Longhorn, and probably the most respected football player this year, made an amazing tackle on a punt return and the other two announcers went crazy. The University of Texas College of Education was founded in 1891. It is currently ranked 8th in the country among public universities, and 15th overall.

Notice also that A&M is ranked 35th in the same link.
The University of Texas Physics Department is ranked 11th nationally.

I personally took Calculus at UT, so I can attest to UT actually teaching it.

You lump people into a group, saying they are all "dumbasses", and rave on about how Aggies are stupid, and the Longhorns are some awesomely awesome that A&M looks like a ****hole in comparison. WAY TO JUMP ON THE BANDWAGON. All I have to say is that I can sit here happily knowing that any one Aggie has more respect, honor, and caring for others in his pinky toe than the whole UT campus and I can't wait until I show up to my full-time job one day and get to hear you call me boss. I'm done here, I'm not coming back to this thread, so go on and talk bad about me. I don't care. Tell me to go screw a llama, I don't give a damn. Moron. Let's begin.
Good for your engineering department. I said academics. That means as a whole. Aggy does not compare. Don't get your panties in a wad because you are part of an inferior school. It's not my fault. Blame the numerous ranking services that consistently rank Texas, as a whole, much higher than A&M every year.
I posted all of that information in the first place because you were ******** enough to try and state that Texas does not teach "real subjects." How stupid can one person be? You stood up for your school? Sure, I guess you did. But you did it in the same way most aggy does....devoid of logic and reason. You make a baseless claim, I slap you around with facts, and you come back with the same drivel that all aggy uses, "we have more class and honor and so on."
The whole "we have more honor" argument is so tired. I guess that is why A&M has been on probation for NCAA violations so many more times than Texas. Or maybe why the football team has had about 20 guys arrested in recent years. Sure, Texas has had the same happen, but 1) We don't claim the moral high ground and 2) Aggy has far more instances than Texas does.
Bandwagon? Talking out your a$$ again, are we? I just graduated from the McCombs School of Business at THE University of Texas last month. One of the highest ranked business schools in the nation. And I'm bandwagon? stfu before you make a bigger fool of yourself.
Boss. hahahahahahahahaha please, man! You can't even put together two coherent sentences, let alone manage anyone! You are a joke!

This isn't directed at any one person in particular, but here goes...
I don't hate the Aggies, they've been a great source of entertainment over the last few years. When they eventually win the T+1 game, it will be infuriating, like it is when your little cousin beats you in a game of 21...embarrasing and infuriating.
I love how Reggie's performance in an Exhibition Game, where there's no rush, suddenly gets compared to Vince's performance in the freaking National Championship, leading his team back from a 10 point deficit with under 7 minutes to play while not only completing 30 out of 40 passes, but also setting an All-Time bowl game rushing record.
Oh, yeah, that's totally the same thing...
...only if you're an Aggie, that is.
Look, I've always wanted Reggie to do well. He is good and fun to watch when he's on. He just is not, and never has been, as good as Vincent Young, period.
In high school, Vince put up better numbers supposedly because he was on a worse team and played against weaker competition, so "of course" he would have better stats than Reggie...his team needed him more. Then in college, it was, "of course" Vince wins more games, he's on a better team. So what of the stats now? Oh, see, he's on a better team, so, eh, urr, umm....Reggie runs a 4.3!!!
Yes, there is alot of Man-love for Vince. Is it not deserved?
The man took Madison high school...Madison...to the state semifinals. He's 6'5" 235 pounds and he's as shifty as guys 8 inches shorter and 60 pounds lighter. He can throw the ball 65+ yards with the flick of his wrist, while jogging sideways (for video proof, go to jcdenton40.com). He is a GREAT role-model to young kids and he enjoys doing it. He is a GREAT leader...everyone on the team feeds off of his energy and believes in him (can either of the last two be said about Reggie? y'all don't have to answer that). He just became the only player in NCAA HISTORY to pass for 3,000 yards and rush for 1,000 in the same season. He led the nation in passing efficiency despite 'not being able to throw.' He was 30-2 as a starter (he wasn't allowed to play past halftime of the WSU loss). He changed the way the winningest coach in college football over the last 8 years coached his team. Finally, he led Texas to their first national championship in 35 freaking years!
I could go on, trust me. Vince Young is an anomaly...a once-in-a-generation type player. His combination of size, smarts, freakish athletic ability, great arm, heart, leadership, and character just doesn't come together very often at all. If you can't see that, you're just refusing to because you're an Aggie or a Sooner who can't see past their hatred for all things Texas.
I want to see Reggie do well in the league. He has a GREAT arm and he has GREAT straight-line, top-end speed. He definitely has upside as a pro and he's a Texas boy, so naturally, I'm rooting for him.

I'm not saying that VY isn't an amazing athlete. He is. I don't hold that against them. I hope he goes on to play great on the NFL, and by no means do I think that Reggie is better than him. It just pisses me off when people start throwing all sorts of crap around about how the Aggies are (or act like) a bunch of dumbasses. If you ever meet a true Aggie, not one of those two-percenters, and take the time to get to know them, you'll find that they're kind, sensitive, caring people who are just as intelligent as anyone else. The requirements for acceptance are identical to those at UT, so 1. they are/can be just as smart as Longhorns, 2. there must be some reason they're going to A&M if it is such a crappy school, huh? You can't judge an entire school on how a small group of people act. That'd be like saying Lufkin is a bunch of stupid sore losers just because some fans don't act in line with the city's expectations. We all know this isn't true. We all know that 99% of Lufkin are good, friendly people who love to support their team. If anyone goes trashing Lufkin on here, they WILL hear from the pack. Everyone expects that. So why do you get so uptight when I defend MY school? Honestly, I didn't mean a lot of those things I said about t.u. I know they teach real classes, and are very well educated people. I just wonder why everyone feels the need to trash the Aggies and call them a bunch of dumbasses/morons when we have done NOTHING to you. And don't say that I threw the first stone. You know that we get crap from all sides year round. I ask you this: If the Aggies suck so much, why were they one of the THREE teams to play Texas within 11 points and actually lead them at multiple times during the game? Even if you say they had a lucky day, they still beat several teams this year. I just wish that someone would get down off their high horse once in a while and acknowledge the fact that Aggies are real, smart people who actually are successful in life. I won't hold my breath.

As far as staying withing 11 points...yada, yada. It should tell you something about the state of the 'rivalry' when you can get excited about a game in which you gave up 40 points on your home field to your arch rival. The fact is, that would have been maybe THE most embarrassing loss in the history of UT football had it materialized. The game was a big deal to you guys and an afterthought for us.
Maybe the pendulum is swinging, but that's the slowest damn pendulum in history.

I know plenty of aggies. Many of my friends went there or cheer for them. Most of them are decent folk. But a lot of people I meet from there are brainwashed cultists. My best friend cheered for USC just to keep "certain people" humble. I haven't spoken to him since. He used to be a Texas fan and only ended up going to A&M because they accepted him after 2+ years at ACC and he wanted to be a football coach. Now after 2 years in that armpit of a town, he's been totally brainwashed. He'd rather cheer against a friend than swallow what little pride A&M provides him.

He's a master at Gracie and will kick you upside the head and then have you out on the floor in some weird crazy position and choked out in seconds.

Nah, seriously. I've got no problem admitting that I'm a tiny *******. I'm wi-r-y (read with thick Scottish accent), though. Our 6'5" 230lb TE once thought he could just drag me into the locker room and give me a swirlie, but he never got close. I'm one of the most laid back people around, but I have always been fiercely competitive when it comes to sports. AZTiger can tell you about how I used to get pretty damn intense on the basketball court and during pickup football games.
I would never mess with wide, though. I knew that long before discovering he had 5 inches and 80lb's on me. Heck, I wouldn't want any part of pack0808 or Bleed either.

BEST VALUE - A&M #1 REGIONALLY & #25 NATIONALLY
TAMU is the top-ranked university in Texas and the Southwest and is ranked #25 overall in Kiplinger's 2006 list of the nation's 100 "best value in public colleges." "The Kiplinger 100" is featured in the current (February) issue of the widely circulated personal finance magazine.
The list is based on a combination of academic qualify and affordability factors. Quality considerations included SAT/ACT factors, student/faculty ratios and graduation rates, and financial considerations included total and "after aid" costs.
TAMU moved up 16 places since Kiplinger's published its 2003-04 "best value" rankings for public universities. UNC-Chapel Hill is #1 on the Kiplinger list. The only other schools in Texas or the Southwest included on the 2006 list are #27 tu and #66 UT-Dallas, 66th.
"The Kiplinger 100" is the second national ranking published within the past six months in which TAMU fares well. U.S. News & World Report ranked A&M 21st among public universities in its "America's Best Colleges" edition last year-and fifth in the magazine's "best value" ratings. Also, The Washington Monthly ranked A&M seventh in the nation in its inaugural college guide that takes into consideration such aspects as community service and research that advances knowledge and drives economic growth. Here are the raw numbers you fail to post.
Category Texas Texas A&M
Enrollment 37,377 35,372
SAT/ACT 55/66 43/57
Admission Rate 51% 72%
Student/Faculty Ratio 19 20
4yr Grad. Rate 36% 32%
6yr Grad. Rate 71% 75%
In-State Costs $16,855 $14,464
In-State after Aid $11,035 $5,584
Out-of-State Costs $24,748 $22,744
Out-of-State after Aid $18,898 $13,864
% Met by Aid 95% 64%
Avg Debt at Grad. $16,200 $15,927
What this means:
SAT/ACT: % of incoming class scoring 600+ in verbal and math on SAT, or 24+ in verbal and math on the ACT. Texas incoming freshmen are smarter.
Admission Rates: Texas is harder to get into = better school
Student/Faculty Ratio: Texas = 19:1 students to teachers. A&M is 20:1. Another advantage for Texas.
So since Kiplinger bases his analysis on academics + cost/aid, it is safe to say after looking at both sets of numbers, the only reason A&M ranked higher in his list is because they're cheaper. Congratulations. A school in the middle of nowhere is cheaper than one in the 16th largest city in the nation and capital of Texas. Mindboggling.

That's BS. If you work hard and make the automatic admission requirements, they are equally difficult to get into. Just becuse t.u. accepts less people does NOT make it "harder to get into".

Here is the Sentinel's take on how the NCAA's 119 Division I-A schools rate in terms of being able to get football players in school. Rankings are 1-10, 10 being toughest and 1 easiest. Ratings were compiled after discussions with conference officials and recruiters across the nation.

Uhhh...did you miss the meaning completely? It means it's a tougher school. That's why you see Rice with a 10, Stanford and Northwestern with 9's, and so on. The better the school is academically, the harder it is for players to get accepted. Texas is a 7. Aggy is a 4. Texas has better players and qualify to get into a better school academically. Just because texas is ranked higher academically, does not mean it is harder for football players to get in. THe thing that may make it ahrder for players to get in at texas is the higher standard currently held by t.u. In almost all major universities, as long as the student passes, if they are a great football talent and desired by the team, they can get in. The top 10% high school thing doesn't help.
