I did not see an official FW Paschal thread.
I always loved the story of the 'Little Engine that Could' --- FW Paschal has been the Little Engine that Could in 5A for quite a while.
There is no doubt that there is some unique tradition here. How many schools can claim that they shutout the TCU B Team -- 26 to 0!!! I mean, it was in 1913, but it still counts in the all time record right? They were called FW Central back then!
It wasn't that long ago they beat Arlington Bowie in a game (2002)!!!! I was there and saw it -- and saw all 27 FW Paschal fans celebrate the incredible feat. Anthony Criss still has nightmares about that one.
One of these days, the mighty Panthers will return to their 1961 glory days (undefeated regular season and trip to state semis). Or they could make the playoffs with 3 or 4 wins in a season again (1993,1994,1995).
You just never know! So lets hear it Panther fans!!!!! Burleson, Weatherford, and Haltom are all beatable (considering last year's close games). Win those 3 and get 1 more win in district, and you are in the playoffs most likely!

I'm not sure if the Panthers will make the playoffs but, things are getting alot better over on West Berry Street. The numbers are climbing for the Panthers football program and, they do return all of their key players, including the main hoss at running back. The Panthers MIGHT just make the postseason this year. As Vols4Ever said, Burleson, Weatherford, and Haltom are winnable games that they could've had last year. I'm very interested in seeing how well the Panthers do this year and, I'll definitely be keeping my eyes on them.

There's an article in today's section of the Fort Worth Star Telegram about the Paschal football program. It also talks about the 1960 and '61 Paschal teams that were state semifinalists.
It speaks about how the attitude has changed around the school about the current football team, and how it was a couple of years back when Coach Cook got there. When he arrived on campus, the Paschal varsity football team had finished the year before with only 17 players. For those that don't know, Paschal has over 3,000 students in the school.
There was only 90 players from freshman to varsity level, in Coach Cook's first year starting out. As of right now, in just his 3rd year at Paschal, Coach Cook has gotten the Paschal football program, from 90 players, to approximately 200 players. Now, I know that 200 players is a small number, especially when you look at teams like Trinity, Katy, Carroll, Allen and other 5A schools. But, 200 players for the Paschal program is HUGE!
In tonight's game against Arlington Sam Houston, the Paschal varsity suited up 58 players!:notworthy Out of those 17 players that were playing for the Panthers the year before Cook got there, 9 were freshman. The next year, which was Cook's first year, those 9 freshman started as sophomores. In all, Paschal started 13 sophomores in Cook's first year, which was 2 years ago. That entire group is now seniors, led by returning all district RB Emmanuel Smith. Out of the 58 that the Panthers suited up tonight, 30 of them are seniors. Paschal hasn't had 30 seniors on one team in over a decade, let alone, 30 players on one team. Coach Cook has this team and program headed in the right direction.
I was at tonight's Paschal/Arlington Sam Houston game, before Mother Nature blew in an ugly storm before it even kicked off. I ended up leaving, as it got even uglier but, unfortunately, it decides to stop after I get to the house.:(

Hey, why not? Vols4Ever came up with it and, I decided to help run with it.:D I'm actually looking for the link for the article that was in the Star Telegram Sports section, that I spoke about earlier about the Paschal football program.
By the way, the Paschal/Arlington Sam Houston game is rescheduled for 7PM Saturday night.

great start for the panthers!!!!
The Panthers COULD make the postseason this year. They have a team that actually believes in themselves, as well as the coach and the system that the coach put in place. They haven't had that in a long, LONG time, right along with numbers and depth. They're carrying 58 on the varsity right now! The Panthers haven't started the season with more than 40 in almost about a decade and, a few of those years, they ended the season with less than 25.
I like where Coach Cook has this program going.

I am sorry my post is so late though. I have been a bit busy trying to help save our ice rink in Duncanville from closing.

I'm glad to see Paschal start off with a victory. I want this district to become one of the tougher ones in the state, just like the LSWC used to be. It can be done, I think; most of these programs appear to be on the rise with Abilene sitting at the top. Paschal may be turning things around, Weatherford appears to be improving and NRHR has a pretty good squad. If N. Crowley can find an offense they'll be deadly. :D
That being said, if I ever meet the punk who cheap-shotted Escobedo during the game last year, I will clean his clock.

No problem, handle your business!
I too, have been thinking playoffs for this squad. Thing about it, is that all of the teams from this district will be improved this year, including Haltom and Weatherford. Burleson will be better also and, North Crowley has always had the athletes and speed.
Richland will be tough as well! This district will provide some good entertainment when they face each other.

Coach Cook was just what Paschal needed. The thing about it, is that it's very difficult to get good coaches in the FWISD when it comes to football. And, if you do get them and they do a great job, it'll be difficult to keep them, due to other schools calling for their services with more money offered. See Bob Jones!
Coach Jones came to Dunbar in, either '99 or 2000, from Judson. If I'm not mistaken, he was the defensive coordinator under DW Rutledge. Anyway, Coach Jones had Dunbar on the right track and, in 2001, he led Dunbar to a 9-1 regular season record. That 1 loss was a 3 point loss on the road in Stephenville, where the 'Cats were defeated 24-21. The 'Cats started that season with a road victory over Abilene High at Shotwell.
The 'Cats avenged that early season 3 point loss to Stephenville, when they met them in the bi-district round of the playoffs, and beat the 'Jackets 35-21, behind Michael Turner's 294 rushing yards. I know that the Carroll faithful remembers this Dunbar team well, as the Dragons defeated the 'Cats 23-22, in the second round. Dunbar missed a go ahead field goal in the last few seconds of that game and, Carroll went on to the semis.
Coach Jones was at Dunbar for only one more season, before someone else (can't remember who) offered him alot more money.
FWISD is one of the least paying jobs around. If a man is good at what he does, then someone will offer him that cash to come do his job where they desire his services. Lets hope Paschal can keep Coach Cook around.

Beat me to it! It's all good!:D
They were very close to winning 3 or 4 district games last year. But, the thing about it, is that those 3 or 4 teams that they almost beat last year, are also better teams this year. Paschal is a better team this year but Haltom, Weatherford, and North Crowley are all better this year as well.
I'm also keeping an eye on the Elks! It seems that Coach Maxfield has the wing-T up and running down there in Johnson County. Y'all's game with Abilene will be for the district title, IMO.
This district as a whole will be very fun to watch.

You're right. The district as a whole is improved over last year, with the possible exception of N. Crowley- but they play a very tough non district schedule- maybe now we won't be called the weakest district in the state( wxcept for Abilene of course). I'm looking forward to the Abilene game, but first the Elks need to get some payback on Mansfield for the last two years. Paschal seems to have improved on defense some, need to get that offense fully untracked.

Yeah, North Crowley's non district slate has been a tough task.
Mansfield isn't what they were last year but, they're definitely still a tough bunch.
The game that Paschal had against Irving Nimitz, yuck! Nimitz scored on 2 fumble returns, and 3 other TDs were setup by Paschal turnovers that they committed inside their own 20. It was horrible! Turnovers will kill you in the worst way.

The folks that don't, and haven't seen the Panthers the last 3 years, doesn't understand how far this program has come. I have seen a big difference in Paschal the last 2 years. In 2006 & 2007, by the time we played them late in the season, they were down to about 20 players suited up, with about 10 more on the sidelines either injured or ineligible, plus who knows how many more quit. They were beaten before the game even started. They were better in 2007- Coach Cooks' 1st year, but didn't get any wins; last year they won 3 non district games, this year they won a district game. But even more than wins, they look like a team, they play hard, they have heart.

As an Arlington Martin fan I would just like to say I am excited to see that we are in FW Paschal's district for the next two years. Being an old guy and having followed high school football as a kid in the 40s and 50s, I can assure everyonr that Paschal has a very rich tradition, not only in football, but basebal, basketball, and track as well. I love going over to your school for basketball and baseball games. It's great to see their football team making great progress. Their baseball teams are pretty salty.
For the record, The Waco High Tigers used to scrimmage and beat the Baylor varsity team regularly in the 30s.
