For those that follow Humble football, or just 19-5a....Humble held their first Scrimmage today against Wheatley High school. For those who weren't in attendance that follow the district closely, ill give you a little run down (as unbiased as i can make it, being an Humble fan)
Based off of what i saw, this is my projected starting lineup.
Offense:
QB- Javelle Allen (6'2 190lbs)
RB- Trey Ownes (6'1 200lbs)-DNP
WR- Darius Tubbs (6'4 205lbs)
WR- Xavier Maxwell (6'2 185lbs)
SE- Freddie Fox (5'9 170lbs)
SE- Dominique Stewart (5'10 175lbs)
OL- Chris Martienez (6'3 275lbs)
OL- Cody Cross (6'1 260lbs)
OL- Jeric Reynolds (6'1 220lbs)
OL- E. Robinson (5'11 270lbs)
OL- Dillon Mayes (6'0 265lbs)
Defense:
DE-Shannon Nettles (6'2 225lbs)
DE- Marc Armstead (5'11 215lbs)
DT-Paul Boyette (6'3 255lbs)
DT- E. Zorell (6'3 240lbs)
LB- John Walker (6'3 215lbs)
LB- Terry Diamond (5'11 210lbs)
DB- Alphonso Harelston (6'2 190lbs)
DB- Tim Stringfellow (6'0 190lbs)
DB- Devante Davis (5'10 185lbs)
DB- R. Dickey (5'10 170lbs)
FS- Brison Burris (5'10 175lbs)
KR/PR- Xavier Maxwell/ Tim Stringfellow
Offensive Line performance today: B-
They Line play is much improved over last year, They are blocking much better...and seem to have a little better grasp of the offense. Returning 2 of our better linmen from last year is helping. They aren't a very big bunch, but they are pretty athletic... They need to improve on plays that call for Runs up the gut. They are allowing holes to collapse much to quick, had it not been for our back's (Darius Lynch-All Purpose player) shiftiness...we would of been stuffed every play.
QB performace: C
I was thoroughly disappointed in the QB's today. For such a close competition no one guy set himself apart from the rest. JaCobe Green, Javelle Allen, and Marcus Ray are competing for the spot...and if i had to give a edge it would be a slight one to Javelle Allen (Returning Player) given that he was the most accurate today..But Marcus Ray is biting at his heals...If he stop slightly overthrowing the receivers...he is the starter...he also adds a running option the others don't really offer.
WR Performance: A
This is a truly special group of Wideouts. Tubbs and Maxwell are going to be a lethal combo on the outside, and Fox and Stewart are going to provide for some take it to the house moments. They just need one thing to round it all out, Consistency from a QB. We have 3 Qb's competting, all are very close....all are capable of starting elsewhere....but the lack of reps a single player should get is affecting the timing this WR need...hopefully we clear a lot of that up after the Katy Taylor scrimmage.
RB Performace: B+
Trey Owens was out for today, But APB Darius Lynch filled in nicely. He is a hard runner, with great vision...and some incredible moved. Due to his athleticism and superb balance gained by Gymnastics, he provides a challenge for most defenses to get a hold of...a simple arm tackle won't bring him down unless you are a lot stronger then his legs. However, he lacks the ideal size to pound the middle and be successful....We need Owens.
DEFENSE
D-line: A
Fast and Big. That is just one way to put it. The interior is still not set as far as a true starter goes IMO. Thomas Mosely(5'10 265) started today, but DT E. Zorell proved his worth in my opinion. He adds much more athleticism to the line, and we will need it with Soph. Kenny Brown (6'2 300lbs) out for the season. If they can get a solid production from the LB core, this defense may rival some of Humble's better defenses over the last two decades.
LB's: C+
They have great hustle, but the lack of Varsity experience for the LB opposite of John Walker is showing. A lot of wrong reads, led to plays for gain that should of never happened. They have some options their, but are still 1-2 weeks away from setting that position.
Secondary: B+
Has some work to do, but the overall performace was exciting. Wheatley didn't provide for much of a test however...the biggest issue i have with them is that the interior DB's failed to stay on assignment and it led to some big runs.
Overall: It was tough to tell how good this team is going to be, or how bad it could be....They suited up against a team that only had 27 varsity players, and Humble pretty much sent everyone in rotating 1st, 2nd out every other play....lots of mix and matching. Humble generally carries 45-50 Varsity players..
I think Katy Taylor will tell us a little more about which players will earn or lose their spots. They will have much more depth then we have, and will also test our conditioning...
How is everyone else in 19-5a looking?
