I'm no huge Colts fan but Peyton Manning is my favorite player right now and Dungy my favorite coach - but one has to call this what it is - the biggest choke job in pro football history - consider this:

-The first time in NFL history a team starts 13-0 and doesn't make the championship game. The first time since 1934 a team starts 13-0 and doesn't win the Super Bowl.

- The Steelers are the first No. 6 seed in to make it to the conference championship.

- The highest scoring offense in the league had 3 points at home into the 4th qtr.

- Were it not for 2-3 terrrible calls - calls that make you wonder if the head ref - Maconelli or whatever the heck his name is - is not the mayor of Indy - the game would have not even been close. The reversal of Polamalo's pick is the single worst reversal I've ever seen in my life.

Bottom line - the Colt should have never rested starters - they are too much of a finesse team to do that and still win. Dungy is not a good big game schemer - and, hate to say it - but Manning does not play his best when he has to.

All very good points. I don't know where to rank it.
Biggest choke game? no
Biggest choke season? maybe

The biggest choke game to me in any sport is still the Phi Slamma Jamma fiasco where NC State beats Houston in 1983 or 84 or whenever that was. I rank this pretty closely, however. I will say the Steelers are playing better now than they did last year when they made the the Conf. championship and lost to NE. Roethlesberger is on fire - his qb rating is like 125. But, still, Indy looked like chokers to me that got every break in the book just to make it close, too close. They were behind 21-3 into the 4th qtr. - that is pathetic.

in an interview after the game, manning said that "resting" had nothing to do with the colts loss. he said they continually practiced and were ready as ever. he also said that the people who keep blaming the resting for a poor game, it had nothing to do with it.

Peyton can say that until he's Colt blue in the face -- and he's still wrong. How can the Bengals score 17 against the Steelers with their second team qb in the FIRST HALF and then Indy scores 3 the first 3+ qtrs. with the greatest offense in the NFL? Something stinks in Indy.

Wide - they were only up 35-3 at halftime:) -- plus that was in Buffalo. I actually thought the Colts would come out smoking in the second half and score 4 second half td's - I was wrong by half.

You have to remember the Steelers almost always have great defenses that are capable of shutting down any team at any time. The Bengals did not score in the 2nd half by the way. Kitna has been a starter in the league for years and is a capable NFL qb. It was not like they had Babe Loserberg in there. Many do not realize how dominant the steelers defense has been recently. This was their worst year in a long time and they still were #4 in total defense and basically tied for 2nd vs the rush. They have been #1 in total defense 4 or 5 times in the last 10 years!! Getting James Farrior back and at 100 percent is huge for the defense. It never suprises me when the steelers shut down a team and destroy the other team's qb. They do it all the time except vs the Patirots. Wait!! They did destroy the patriots in the regular season last year and completely shut him down. different story in the playoffs though.

That guy has a few screws loose. He apparently said something to the effect that "God didn't watch over the Colts on that last play" Are you kiddin' me? How about just making the kick Vande.

You guys are asking the wrong question and focusing your attention in the wrong place. Instead of asking if the Colts choked, you should be asking why everyone was looking past a great Steelers team. Instead of looking at how the Colts lost the game, you should be looking at how the Steelers won it. I know about the lucky breaks in the final minutes, but as the old saying goes... good teams make their own luck and the Steelers are a damn good team.

They finished the regular season tied for the division lead with the Bengals with an 11-5 record. This is a team with arguably the best young QB in the league in Big Ben. A great "thunder & lightning" combo of the Bus and Willie Parker. Two of the best WRs in Randle-El and Hines Ward along with the best rookie TE I have seen in a while in Heath Miller. Throw in an outstanding defense with Casey Hampton, Joey Porter, Ike Taylor and arguably the best safety in the game in Troy Polamalu. Throw in the fact that Indy really hasn't played a game in over a month and I have to wonder why Pitt was looked over the way they were. The better team won last night... period.

Pittsburgh was just the better team. I knew it after the first Colts-Steelers game earlier in the season. With a healthy Big Ben, they would have beatin' the Colts then too.

Thank You jtk. Everybody was acting like Indy had just won 3 straight super bowls or something?? The Steelers were 15-1 (one of best records ever) last year with a first year qb. I am sick of hearing about the Steelers being a 6th seed and how that is supposed to be a big deal because a #6 seed has never beat a #1 seed in the playoffs. Anybody knows with common football knowledge that this was not a true 6th seed. First of all, In most years 11-5 will get you as high as 2nd or 3rd seed. The AFC was just loaded this year with very good records. Second of all, if Ben would have been healthy the steelers would have been at least 13-3 and possibly 14-2?? He makes a GIANT difference and Maddux lost a few games by himself. Ben has lost only 3 games in 2 years. He has only lost 1 time on the road. The Steelers are very very talented on both sides of the ball and this should not be that big of a shock. Many do not realize that James Farrior mlb, was 2nd in the mvp race last year on defense. He has been hurt all year and he is finally at 100 percent. He makes the already very tough steeler defense even tougher. You are right jtk Heath Miller is a big time tight end. He is just a rookie. I just love their style of play and always have. Mean, hard hitting, great defense, and very very physical football. That is the steelers. They even have the most physical wr in the league in Ward. He does it all with a smile. If the Steelers can win 3 straight road games to go to the super bowl it will be amazing. It is going to be tough and Denver is historically hell at home in the playoffs. If they are not ready they could get hammered. That was an emotional road win last week. I was thinking the AFC would be a heavy favorite no matter who the NFC opponent was but Carolina is looking very impressive now. I think Seattle is in BIG trouble. I do not bet much but i am putting some money on that one. Carolina is 4 point dogs in that one.

That was horrible to watch. That team had so much talent. The Oilers vs Cowboys would have been a great super bowl that year. They were easily the 2 best teams. The oilers were just the biggest choking team EVER!!

The Texans appear to be headed towards the same.

Get VY - It's a no brainer. If they don't - I would bet that he wins a superbowl before the Texans.

Yes houston had the biggest choke job ever, they knew that Dallas would have blew them out though;) ........As for the Colts, well they were the first team to win their first 13,and have the son of the head coach commit suicide, and disrupted everything, terrible roller coaster ride for Dungy, the staff, and players. And dont tell me that had nothing to do with it,cause it did.....

the suicide had a ton to do with the colts downhill ride at the end of the year. they were never the same after that. and you know that dungy is upset that they arent going to win the super bowl, especially after such a tragedy like that.

I have never heard so many excuses for not winning a game then i have from Colt apologist. (Well besides some Longview fans ;) ) Some act like the Colts have been to the Super Bowl lately? This is not ground breaking stuff!! This happens yearly. You would think the Colts were trying to win their 4th super bowl in a row?

The Colts never have and did not last week defend the 3-4 defense and blitz schemes.

Yeah and the Steelers have lost to that same partriot team twice in the last 3 years in the AFC championship game at HOME because the Steelers had the home field advantage and best record in AFC (even better then the pats) So do not play that violin with the steelers my friend. The steelers know all about the pats in the playoffs believe me. Hey i will give you a quiz?? What team has the best NFL record in the last 2 years and by far the best road record? I will give you a hint.... their QB's name is Big Ben. ;)
