I know of a team that will play them in non-district. How do they look this year? Will the game be worth our booster club getting a bus or two? What is it... 10-12 hour bus ride way out there:(...;)

Cooper should reload this year quite well. 8 back on offense including the QB. Tough stretch with Abilene high, Garland and Hebron in non-district, but Cooper held tough last year in all 3 of those games.

Come on out to Abilene! Only thing that would make it 10 hours would be all of the metro-mess traffic!

They took Hebron to OT last year before Hebron managed to put them away. We have them for homecoming this year.

The longest trip Garland will have after that( BEFORE THE POs) is about 20 min. over to HBJ:D

Cooper will be making the 300+ mile trek to Hereford this season! Cracks me up when the metroplex area schools gripe about having to go SO FAR to play.

Yep, growing up any time we had to ride a bus for more than an hour it was a catastrophe. I can only imagine the west Texas school's trips they make on a regular basis.

Maybe for the playoffs the Owls will get lucky road trips like we had in '04 - we played all 5 of our playoff games in Dallas county that year.

San Angelo Central took traveling to a whole new level the past few years. Multiple trips a season to the Panhandle for district is cold blooded. I can't imagine how the JV and freshman football teams felt about those Thursday games, getting home around probably 1 AM and then having to go to school on Friday mornings. Oh, and what about the baseball, softball, and basketball teams playing games on Tuesdays out of town? OUCH!

Garland and Cooper have played three times. Maybe a long distance rivalry starting. Scores:
2008: Garland 29-Cooper 14
1997: Cooper 15-Garland 10
1996: Garland 15-Cooper 5
Chance for Cooper to even things up?
BTW, again, those 97 and 96 games were played long ago. Touchdowns counted for five points, no extra points

Last years game was actually pretty close. Cooper led 14-3 going into the 4th and went for it at midfield on 4th down. Garland scored and then iced it late with a interception return for a touchdown.

Garland looks to be loaded. Man, you guys have really got some talent. What is it now, 7 Big 12 commits??

i bet its later than 1 AM...it would be about 6.5 hours? from Amarillo to San Angelo, so a game that ended at 9:00...would get back at 3:30 AM! and we all know that it takes a long time to get everything on the bus and eat, and make stops for the restroom, so probably later than that

I still think that was one of the stupidest things the UIL has ever done in sending San Angelo Central into that Panhandle district.

When I was in high school band in Robstown (near Corpus Christi) we had a few trips a year to the RGV. We generally got back about 2 am.

Wasn't that just for football though? I don't know why but I always thought that Central played in the LSWC in the other sports but I may have just imagined that.

Up until this past year when they moved the Odessa and Midland schools to the panhandle, that was true. The past like 4-6 years San Angelo Central played in 2-5A football, but 3-5A for all girls sports and every sport. No clue why.

Actually due to travel concerns Hereford petitioned the UIL and won the right to play in District 4-4A for football only and 3-4A for all other sports. Cooper makes the trek to Hereford this fall on October 9th.

I agree.....seems like it would have made more sense to put SA Central into the spot Abilene Cooper vacated when they dropped to 4A and thus keeping the old LSWC intact.

Central was gone from 3-5A football long before Cooper dropped down to Class 4A (last year).

Yeah.no s#@t. I'm just saying it would have made alot more sense to move Central back into 3-5A to take Cooper's spot instead of sending Abilene High east to the metroplex and putting Central and the Odessa and Midland schools into that 10 team super district that spans from San Angelo to Amarillo and only allows one pre-district game. ;)

Correct, when San Angelo was moved into a footbal district with the Lubbock and Amarillo schools, it was for football only and all other sports still played in the district with Abilene/Midland/Odessa schools.

Now that district 2 has been formed, the schedules are fixed so that Vball, BB, Baseball, Soccer, etc. only travel to Amarillo (or Amarillo schools only travel to San Angelo) on Saturdays. Still, it seems crazy to travel 12 hours round trip to play a volleyball game that may only last an hour:eek:

San Angelo vs. Amarillo High or Tascosa JV fotball games are played on Thursdays, but they begin at 3:00pm. This allows the teams to travel all day, play the game, travel home and still arrive home at a fairly decent hour (midnight or 1AM). This also allows the students to only miss one day of school instead of missing a portion of two days of school.

The reason San Angelo was orginally placed in a football district with the Lubbock and Amarillo schools is so that the Panhandle district would have 6 teams. If San Angelo would have stayed in the LSWC, the Panhandle district would have had 5 teams and the LSWC would have had 7 teams.

During the last realignment, the UIL had the same problem. Even though Cooper dropped to 4A and San Angelo could have filled that slot in the LSWC, the Panhandle district would only have 5 teams.

The UIL does not like to have a district with less than 6 teams, especially with 4 teams advancing to the playoffs. The UIL has had a 4 team district in 5A once before (and the East Texas schools hated it!) and have had 5 team districts in 3A (but only 3 teams advance to the playoffs in 3A).

The preference to have at least 6 teams in a district is the reason Hereford was moved into district with Cooper and Frenship.

Hereford was originally placed in District 4-4A for all sports and they petitioned the UIL to only play football in 4-4A and 3-4A for all other sports. Cooper has to make that long journey to Hereford this fall.

speaking of school size and dropping down. You realize that if they did enrollment today and The UIL didn't change the bump number Cooper would move back to 5A. They would return to being the smallest 5A school in the state.

I keep forgetting that you have to get all of the equipment on the bus. And, after getting back from that trip, you have to get it all off of the bus, and put it up.
