I listen to Christian and non-Christian music. I like country, worship, pop, and the old light-rock style in both genres.
I don't listen to alternative, rap, R&B, or heavy metal although there are small pockets of each that I've found enjoyable over the years.

That's a great song. Keep in mind we have a bunch of carpetbaggers (I'll lay off of the followup joke) in the Dallas area. That's how you can go to a Stars game and see quite a few Dead Wings jerseys in the crowd. These people don't have loyalty to Texas or Texas traditions.

That's somewhat true. I was conceived here, born in Florida, but everything about me says I'm a Texan. Australia is a great place to find people who are Texan-like. Some of the other Western states are Texan-like, but the South isn't for the most part.
My favorite is hard rock. Also like blues, jazz, and classical a lot. Can't handle opera. I would say something about "rap", but this is a music thread.

Well, I just auditioned and won a spot in a local cover band here in the Houston area. We play Classic Rock, some Alternative and my first performance with them will be in February. I'm the rhythm guitarist and backing vocalist plus will also sing lead vocals on a couple of tunes. The lead guitarist in this band was one of the original members of Twisted Sister.
Anyway, if you haven't guessed, my favorite style of music is rock from the 50's to 2006. I also like the blues, soul, jazz and classical symphonic orchestras. I even like High School football Bands!! My favorite band...The Beatles.
Even though I was born and raised here in Harris Co. I have never developed a taste for Country music. Can't stand it when they sing with that nasaly, hick accent. It takes a lot of work to sing like that.
Punk and some of that really nasty, noisy Metal is irritating to me. No musicianship at all. Just power chords and screaming. Yuck!
Rap sucks big time.

I'd have to say hard rock and grunge. I grew up during the grunge explosion so it was mainly me, my torn jeans, and Soundgarden, Alice In Chains, Nirvana, Mother Love Bone, and Pearl Jam. I also loved and still love Smashing Pumpkins, Anthrax, Metallica (...And Justice For All and before that album), Dream Theater, Helmet, Led Zeppelin, Rage Against The Machine, Pink Floyd, etc. Recent bands that I enjoy would include Project 86, System of a Down, Audioslave, Tool, A Perfect Circle, Incubus, Foo Fighters, Deftones, and 311. There are many more, but those are just a few.

I'm a big fan of Christian music, but I must admit that I think some people do it for the wrong reasons or at least keep doing it for the wrong reasons. There are a lot of great artists out there who hold true to their beliefs, but some don't do that and I know they give others a bad name. I also know that the enemy fights against a lot of the people who want to do right.

My favorite type of music is that which has good guitar...I'm talkin' Classical Guitar to Heavy Metal. Alot of Speed Metal and Death Metal has awesome instrumentals, but the singers just ruin it for me. I prefer the guys that can sing, at least a little bit.
I also really like Classical music, Blues, and Jazz. Some Pop is bearable...as is some Country...and I like good Rap (that's not an oxymoron, I promise) more than either.
My favorite band is Dream Theater, and my other favorites don't come anywhere close. Those guys are simply incredible. I saw them live and I don't think I can ever go to another concert unless they're the headliner.
Other bands I like alot...in no particular order...
Tool, Godsmack, System of a Down, Pre-Re-load Metallica, Ozzy, Sevendust, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Jimi, Van Halen, Queensryche, Zakk Wylde's solo projects, Skynyrd, Led Zeppelin, Rage Against the Machine, Pre-GSTK but Post-Hair band Pantera, G 'n R, Creed, Pink Floyd, Skid Row, Disturbed, 3 Doors Down, and many others!

For the wiser folks out there...
Were there as many one-hit wonders back in the 50's-60's-70's as there have been in my generation? I'm thinking no, because I attribute the one-hit wonder phenoms to the expansion of mass media and, most notably, MTV and it's clones. I'm wondering if our generation has produced any transcendent music that will stand the test of time? I guess U2...who else from our generation will still be played decades from now?

I think there has always been a huge amount on 1-hit wonders. I'll say there are more now, because I think there are more record producers out there, people are more into fame, and there is better marketing of singers. We have more access to music now than ever and that has to lead to more 1-hit wonders. I don't think it's about quality or style and just a result of the numbers.

I think you see one hit wonders as a subject of a great deal of disposable income by record companies. They grab an unknown, produce the crap out of their album (mainly the one song), give them all this airplay, make a lot of money off of them, and then shelf them for the rest of time. These artists back in the 50s, 60s, and early early 70s were signed to dinky back alley record companies that couldn't foot the bill to give them huge exposure. It wasn't until Clive with Arista and David Geffen came along that you start to see that. Thats when you see the super companies pumping money into the next big one hit to make money off of. But yes, you can attribute it to mass media. I'm sure Chubby Checker's start was largely word of mouth. Elvis, truth be told, wasn't exactly the greatest singer or guitarist. But he had a pretty, marketable face and he was one of the first to receive major major publicity via the Ed Sullivan Show. You barely remember those who were not on the Ed Sullivan Show back in those days.

As far as who will be played decades from now?....
Nirvana's reputation will always precede them no matter what and the fact that the release of Nevermind marks a VERY distinct end to hair metal and the ushering in of darker, brooding, angst-ridden rock.
Metallica will probably be remembered for a long long time.
U2 most definitely.
Tool is moving in that direction with how picky they are and how they truly do not put out crap
Smashing Pumpkins. Pretty much anything Billy Corgan touches turns to gold.

Excellent points Lonny and BigArab.
BigArab, I agree with all of your picks. Smashing Pumpkins didn't come to mind at first, but now that you mention it, I can definitely see that. Nirvana is a great pick. Pearl Jam had a good run too...maybe their stuff will endure. Come to think of it, Green Day and Alice and Chains might have some staying power too. G 'n R is a classic band too...I'm sure their stuff will last. I know Ozzy started alot earlier, but his solo stuff took off in my generation...and he had some monster hits.
I love Metallica, but they took such a seemingly big downturn and changed so dramatically after the Black Album, I'm not too sure what their legacy will be. Maybe everyone will just forget those other albums (Load was actually quite good...S&M was awesome) and the Black album will be the one that's played years from now...It definitely has some transcendent qualities. My favorite Metallica album is '...And Justice for All'. That one didn't have any 'radio friendly' songs (except for "One" but they rarely played the full version), but they were damn good. 'Puppets' was a masterpiece.
Tool are freaks and they make great music, but I wonder if their stuff isn't so far out there that it's brilliance will get lost in the shuffle.

He was the original Big E. I liked his voice and even went to the Elvis Museum in Los Fresnos and talked to the guy for about an hour who was friends with Elvis in the Army. He really likes high school football, too.

That's your only quote that's not on the mark. I'm not an Elvis fan because when I first saw him was when Hollywood was trying to turn him into Perry Como. I hated those stupid Elvis movies. In the 70's when 50's style rock was being revisited I listened to him. The man can sing and a lot better than most male rockers that have followed since.

A legend died today...
The man that brought us the hits "Mustang Sally" and "I'm gonna wait 'til the Midnight hour" died of a heart attack at age 64.
RIP
To the "Wicked" Wilson Pickett
I liked Pickett better than James Brown or I mean his tunes were more to my liking than Brown's.

yeah, we always listened to " in the Air Tonight" by Phil Collins before our football games. I know it sounds goofy, but next time you hear it, imagine a dark lockerroom and getting psyched up to knock someone's block off.
We were undefeated in district for 5 years in a row, so it was fairly effective...
Before a Katy home game at Rhodes, in the parking lot before the tailgate, I turn up 'If You Want Blood' by AC/DC in my car to concert hall pitch.
Yeah, that's the ticket!

All I am saying is that Elvis was a great entertainer and he benefited from the advent of television. If it hadn't been for that, you probably would've remembered him just as much as you would've remembered Chubby Checker or some other 50's musicians.
As far as Tool goes, I'm sure some people were saying that about Pink Floyd and thought they were a little too out there to endure, but they're legends now.

By the way, Master of Puppets is genius. When I first bought that album my freshman year of college I listened to Battery and made it my mission to be able to play that song end to end.

don't be so defensive, there is some wisdom in these here threads.
ms Kitty is just referring to the fact that a "cool" tat when you're 20 can end up being a grim reminder of "wild times" when you are 45.
Since my kids started asking questions, I have had to explain my USMC tattoo and why i got it and so forth. Nothing wrong with them at all. things can change later, so be sure you think it all the way through.
Nobody's condemning you or your tats. She was simply saying you might feel different about "metallica" later.
by the way, earlier, I wasn't accusing you of being on roids. i was saying you were touchy like someone with roid rage. I stand by that, and remember, we all have the right to joke around in here when someone is getting a little too serious.

That's a question I've always asked myself. I think about if I'm going to regret doing something and don't if I would and always ask if I'll regret if I don't do something and have almost always done something if I thought I would regret not doing it. I've pretty much always been happy about what I do and don't do.
