View Full Version : In the locker room after the Rose Bowl

In a world where perspective is too often foreign, this is one of the coolest things I have ever read and one of the best quotes a head coach could ever give...
In the locker room, after all of the trophy presentations and the hugs and general mayhem, Mack Brown talked to his team for the final time in a locker room as part of the 2005 Championship season.
He did all of the usual things, congratulating them and again complimenting USC for its long accomplishment.
And then he said this: “Finally, this is the most important thing I want you to hear tonight. Remember that we love you. Be proud of what you have accomplished, and enjoy this moment. Let this be a great thing in life, but don’t let it be the best thing that ever happens in your life. Go on from here, be great husbands and great dads, and make a difference.”
The message was clear. The young men who had ascended the pinnacle of college football can say forever that in the year 2005, they were the best in America at what they did. But the beauty of mountain peaks is that when you have scaled one, there is another higher one, still just ahead.

Bill Belichick hasn't won a Super Bowl without Tom Brady...
Jimmy Johnson didn't win one without Emmitt Smith...
I guess they are not good coaches either?????
What's you point?

Mack recruited Vince and won the championship with his own players. Tressel did not do that, Stoops did not do that, Coker did not do that. I would say that Mack is a pretty good coach

he IS pretty good. I will concede that. A man named vincent made him great. As far as Mack recruiting his own players, well, he ain't call Mr February for nothing! One cannot deny the immensely talented classes he has CONSISTENTLY brought in.
I will continue to question his ability to execute to the level of his team's ability.
As a Red Raider fan, I sit here and watch the Steers come up short year after year when they have top 5 talent. I can only dream of even 1/2 of that talent ever coming to the SouthPlains. that's why we have to use the MacGuyver offense(bubble gum and duct tape,) to overcome the lack of consistent talent across every position like the Bevo's have. that's why when the rust lovers start crowing about how great they are, I just think about what a true X's and O's coach could do with players like they have.
As a Texas High School Fan, I honestly do not understand how he has not won at leat 2-3 MORE NC games. He gets #1 talent consistently, what do you have to show for it?, About 4 holidays bowls before Vincent took over.

so I guess Barry Switzer is great too?
Walsh never won without Montana... draw your own conclusion...
Jimmy built a team with Emmitt as a main ingredient.
Jimmy won at other levels, he could n't win in MIami (PRO)because Dan wasn't going to give up his team.
My point earlier was that what does Mack have to show for the years before Vince? It's not like he built the UT machine on his own. Immense talent and stratospheric resources have been pissed away in Austin for years. Mack, until the last 2 years, contributed to this trend.

One also has to note that in addition to this being Mack's first trip to the National title game this was the first year he has ever won a conference championship (as a head coach anywhere).

The man has more wins over the past 8 years then every other coach in the NCAA. He also has a BCS title. What more does he have to do to show you that he is a great coach.

did you know Mike Leach has beaten OU more times than ole Mack?
Not saying he isn't a GOOD coach, just that he wastes alot of what he has to work with.

Why is sand aggy even talking?
I see that the sickening amount of ***** envy is not limited to the Bryan/College Station region. It has spread all the way up to Nowhere,Tx.
Give me a freakin' break...
Mack could win the national championship for the next 10 years...and these idiots would still say he can't coach.
We are Texas..................deal with it.

If you think Mack is a bad coach I can only imagine what you think of Coach Fran - aka Coach Twinkie. That CPA look-alike has really lit it up at A&M hasn't he?
Mack could duplicate what he's done at every Big 12 school - folks forget how mediocre UT was before he arrived.

...for beating the land thieves little buddy. You can crow about beating this team more times or whatever, but for the big programs like Texas, BlowU, etc., all these games are just steps to a higher goal. I know it's a big deal when Tech beats the land thieves because it is a big win for the program and it's a signature game of the year. Even this year, with all the hype surrounding the Red River Shootout, beating BlowU was big for Texas simply because it was another step towards the national championship.
BTW, Darrell Royal is widely regarded as not only one of the best coaches in UT history, but one of the top coaches in college football history. DKR won a national championship in his 7th year compiling a 59-14-3 record (.776 winning percentage) during that time with 6 bowl game appearances. Mack Brown won a national championship in his 8th year compiling a 83-19 record (.813 winning percentage) with 8 bowl game appearances. Pretty amazing to see how little ole' underachieving Mack compares to one of the all-time greats.;)

I'm not envious of what's in your mouth
Mack won't win another NC, at Texas or anywhere else unless they pay Vince enough to stay.
You are Texas , and that IS your problem
I forgot to bow...

How does it feel to know that even if Mack never wins another title, he will still have more national championships than Tech has ever won or ever will win? :o

Slorch - I realize this is the off-season - but GET A LIFE. You've made 81 posts - 81 of which are suggesting that Mack Brown is an under-achiever. We get your point. Now go do something positive like iron you dinner napkins. Whether you root for Tech or A&M, or whoever UT is playing - they've all failed miserably at the past two years.

Tech is just fine. We are not miserable. We are not failing. Steady improvement is the evidence
honestly, I would love Texas ( the State) to be in the same shape as Florida with 3 top notch programs getting National Acclaim
Thank you for thinking I am civilized enough to use napkins, being from Tech, and all, I prefer my shirt sleeves, but I digress.
Lastly, most of my early posts were discussing SLC and Lufkin playing at SFA- which I supported! My kids will go to the Woodlands, so one of these days I may have to stop cheering for the Pack.
I am glad for the players and for the Big XII that the steers beat USC, but you can't just assume that we all love THE U of Texas or ole Mack.

Beating OU was big because it hadn't been done in 7 years.

Fair enough and I also agree that UT, Tech and A&M or whoever should consistently be Top 15 teams. I don't bleed orange, but was certainly ecstatic after the USC game. I have no doubt Mack developed a mental block with OU. They should have beat them in '04 and in Simms senior year. Too much internal pressure or something.

Wow Slorch.......if your kids are going to be going to TWHS are you ever going to be disappointed with an underachieving program and inept coaching. Just wait......you'll see! I do support your argument that TU has done less with more talent and I hope that TAMU and TT someday run roughshod over TU........would like to see the other D1's make some inroads into this group!!!
