Dan Burk with The Colony really earned his keep - he makes more than Todd and the team shocks the world with an 0-10 record. But, hey, they look great in the weight room.

Dan Burk with The Colony really earned his keep - he makes more than Todd and the team shocks the world with an 0-10 record. But, hey, they look great in the weight room.

The reason for his salary at The Colony goes back to the mid 90's. The LISD pays all coaches the same amount of money. Back in 94-95 Duncanville wanted Coach Gage from Lewisville, when our AD realized Duncanville would pay more he upped Gage's salary. However at this time both The Colony and Marcus were very good football teams, The Colony was 11-1 in 94 and Marcus finished 15-1 in 95. The AD of the LISD Neal Wilson, gave both Coach Tommy Briggs of The Colony and Coach Que Brittain of Marcus the same salary that he gave Coach Gage. In order to get the best coaches in this district or maintain the good ones we had, this process of paying all the head coaches the same salary was needed. It's something that is still in place to this day and something I agree with.

Jesuit's coach makes a little over $65,000. That does not include summer camps, which can bring in an extra $5,000 most summers. He teaches two English classes a day, and he is in charge of one pe class in the fall and two in the spring. Last year, Jesuit went 10 and 2, won their district, and made it to the second round of the playoffs (losing to a great Longview team). This year, Jesuit went 4 and 6. My guess is he is the lowest paid 5A coach in the area, and perhaps the only coach in the area teaching English. For those who were afraid Jesuit would become some powerhouse in the UIL, there is proof positive that they won't. Perhaps they have their priorities right, although I think he deserves a huge pay raise. But then, he's a good friend. I think coaches are well paid and some deserve it. I also think some teachers deserve more than they make, and the schools should work on fixing that. Just my opinion.

There was an earlier article in DMN that stated, UIL allows H.S. coaches a maximum of $300 per year in gifts from Booster Clubs.

This news story has been running 3 days straight in the DMN, and it is creating quite a controversy. But the bottom line is, high school football in Texas is king, and if anybody didn't believe it before, they can believe it now.

Not Texas, but High School Football in Texas. The salaries prove it. Your very fortunate to have a football championship at your high school. You are the envy of all high schools. They all want a football championship so bad, they're willing to spend the money to get it. Just like college and the NFL.

I have to question the accuracy of some of those figures. The DMN article uses the phrase "total compensation", but I don't believe that figure includes the stipends added to a lot of coaches salaries.

Texas Monthly ran an article on this subject a couple of years ago. At that time, Highland Park's Randy Allen was the state's highest paid coach with a salary of $100,000 a year plus a $16,000 housing allowance. That's a total package of $116,000 compared to the $105,652 quoted in the DMN article. I suspect that $105,652 figure is coach Allen's base salary before any stipends because I really doubt they have dropped his pay over the last couple of years. I have been told coach Allen's full contract is worth over $120,000 a year.

There have been some rumors that Sam Harrell's total package is valued at close to $200,000. I find that very hard to believe, but I also believe he makes a good deal more than the $106,044 the DMN has.

it is not free. It is still the Dealership's truck that he must give back every time it gets around 5,000 miles on it and get a new one. It is not a gift, because he does not own the truck.

Must suck to have to go get a *new* truck every couple of months. Must also suck to not have to worry about oil changes, tire rotations, tire changes, brakes, etc etc etc...

Here are the Booster Club guidelines from the U.I.L. and I don't think it involves paying additonal salary to coaches or new Dodge trucks. Katy found out in 1998 what the U.I.L. thought about parents feeding the team at Pizza Hut on a Wednesday after a practice. No playoffs.

There is a $300.00 limit per year per coach that a booster club can legally give a coach.

As far as local business compensating a coach, I don't know how those incentives are viewed by the U.I.L. Too bad the teachers don't get a car allowance or local businesses to compensate their pay when they do an excellent job teaching our kids math, science or english.

So I'm looking at these percentages of what the coach makes compared to a teacher.
That's just F-ed right up.. No other way to put it...

You'd think with all that money they could afford to buy their own cars/trucks. Or better yet, buy a teacher a car.
