Just why is El Paso so bad? It's a big city, nearly 500,000 maybe more. There has to be some talent, some coaches out there worth something? Permian, Midland, Midland Lee, all those west texas school have proven time and time again that there is talent out there and u can win. Why doesnt El Paso have one dominate team that can compete on every level, Dallas-Ft. Worth has SLC, San Antonio has SV, and Houston has Katy, whats the deal with El Paso?

Texas is big. Drive to El Paso from anywhere else in Texas to get a sense of how big. EP is out there on the other side of hells half acre all by it's lonesome. EP doesn't have the big suburban enclaves that other cities have. It is a big town surrounded (along the Rio Grande) by border towns that support trade and manufacturing in and from Mexico. There is absolutely nothing north of I-10 to the east for miles save a few trees and lots of rocks and cactus. El Paso has a beauty of it's own that more closely resembles what most people who've never been to think Texas probably looks like. I feel like John Wayne just bein' there.
I might have a hard time trying to keep my focus on football with all that vastness and beauty around me.

Same problem South Texas has... the majority of the population is Hispanic. I don't think I need to explain the relevance of that but if I need to... let me know.

OK, I'll say it. Your typically poorer districts and towns don't have the money support to have real good teams. We all know some people/races typically are better suited for certain positions than others are. The Hispanic towns don't have enough diversity to get the football players they need to win deep in the playoffs.

El Paso is not poor by any means or measure. The city is home to a wealth of businessmen who own and manage international operations. The school districts in EP proper are not short of funds and neither are the parents of the students who would participate in the football programs.
It has more to do with where, what and who El Paso is compared to the rest of Texas. No big blue collar in EP - that's across the border. It makes a difference because the attitude is different.

I would beg to differ with your assertion that "El Paso is not poor by any means or measure." El Paso county has a third of their households living at or below the poverty level. The median income is less than 30k a year (and that is 37% below the state average). Further more the median income level has declined 3 successive years. I can go on and on, El Paso in every since of the of term is poor.

The schools in the more affluent areas of town seem to do fairly well in football every year. El Paso Franklin has been to the playoffs 10 out of the 11 years since they started playing Varsity Football. They did fairly well this year, beating two teams NOT from El Paso in the playoffs. Montwood is another team which has historically been one of the best teams in El Paso. Now, to answer your question more directly...From 1980, when class 5a was formed, to 1999, only ONE El paso team (5A or 4A) was able to defeat a team from the Midland/Odessa or Panhandle areas in the playoffs. El Paso Andress beat Midland Lee on penatrations, after playing to a 21-21 tie.
Since 2000, El Paso teams (5A or 4A)have 8-9 PLAYOFF victories against teams from the Midland/Odessa and Panhandle area. Franklin even beat Mansfield Summit.
Baby steps...baby steps. Considering the football history in the city, I dont think you can expect a team from El Paso to be a state powerhouse in the near future....or ever.
BTW, El Paso Del Valle won the 4A boys soccer title last year. Brownsville Lopez won the 4A title in 2004.

What do you know, a thread that I can actually add something too.
El Paso is considered a poor city, some kids cannot really dedicate to football as much as they want to, but that mainly affects the 4A teams that are from the poorer areas of town and the schools from the towns just on the outside of the city. The schools from the more well off sides of town tend to do better. Another thing that I think adds to the problem is we have too many high schools too close together. You can be at one school and drive for less than 5 minutes and be at another. Although these schools are pretty much filled to capacity it does spread out the talent a little bit. The main thing that some people overlook, and I think is partially the reason we never made it far in the playoffs, is in all those years the first out of town playoff games put us against the LSWC back when it was in its prime (not saying they are bad now, but I do not believe it is as good as it used to be). Just give El Paso time and hopefully we will be more consistent in going deeper in the playoffs and fielding better teams.
Oh and epgridiron.com is a piece of crap site. All thats there are dumb players that only post topics talking S*** about other players or teams, no actual football discussion there. That is why I come here.

okay...first off...except for the guy from el paso...all of you prolly never lived or played in el paso...take it from someone who did...individually there is no difference between players there or in San Antonio or Houston or wherever...I myself played for two seasons for EP Hanks then moved to Converse Judson...big change...but i went from a little sophmore de at Hanks to the starting Tight End at Judson in 2005...say what you want about those teams...i have some great memories from when i played on the fields with my friends and teammates...we went just as hard there as we did in Converse...and when we (Judson) played La Joya and Laredo Nixon, i could see myslef back then trying as hard as i could...i respect those players having to hear that the rest of Texas is better than them...yet they continue to play...to all those players from far West Texas and the valley...keep it up...

I myself played at El Paso Austin my freshman year and moved to Judson in time to get two letters and win state. I can tell you that El Paso isnt even as close to many citys. I think they might be able to hang with some valley teams but even that would be close. As for working as hard... I remember when I moved here, I absolutely hated Judson cuz we actually had to work hard here and then I realized why. Cuz we wrecked it on other teams. You can even ask Aaron bout it... he'll tell you the comparision as well.

I think there just wasn't much focus on football out there for a long time, but that's changing.
And to those who lumped Midland/Odessa in with El Paso - you realize Midland is just as close to Fort Worth as it is to El Paso? El Paso, while in Texas, has always struck me as being more like a New Mexico town. It is WAY out there.

Somehow he forgot about the original dominant team in SA. I think Judson had a pretty good year this year. How many teams have played in two 5A title games this decade:
SLC 4
Katy 3
Judson 2
SV 2
Westlake 2

I've been to El Paso at least 7 times, but I went 3 times in 2005. They have their better parts of town, but there is a huge amount of poverty there. I do think location has something to do with the qulaity of football. It's not a rich town in spite of some schools having more money than others.

In no way am I lumping El Paso with schools from the Panhandle and Midland/Odessa area. I was simply trying to illustrate how El Paso schools have performed against foes from "West Texas", and pointing out the significant improvements over the last 5 years.
Its simply very difficult for any school to gain statewide respect when every year El Paso schools were known for losing in bi-district, and in the 2nd round to schools from Midlan, Odessa, Amarillo, and on.

I'm not so sure that that is because the El Paso teams are getting that much stronger and more competitive but rather could just be that the Midland/Odessa and Panhandle teams have been in a relative slump since Lee won their last title in '00. In the 86 year history of the UIL playoffs an El Paso County team has played in the State Quarterfinals (i.e. Region I Finals) a total of 17 times with a subsequent 0-16-1 record (El Paso Coronado tied Permian 14-14 in 1975 but lost the tiebreaker). Only 3 of those appearances have occurred since 1980.
I'm sure that one of these days they'll break through though because they have had some pretty bad luck over the years losing to the eventual state champs 9 out of those 17 times which is statistically more than double the number you would expect just picking random Quarterfinal matchups.

As far as Dallas Carter goes... I don't live in DFW so I can't give you their story but....football is just as much about the coaches as it is the players... great teams have a mix of talented smart players and good coaching.

HOW do you KNOW its NOT the RGV's or ElPaso's COACHING!?!??!? i dont think the RGV or ElPaso coaches are on the SAME level as Coach Hill or Dodge....so IS IT COACHING!!??! wait, what about our INTELLIGENCE....since we are from SOUTH Texas and ElPaso...ARE WE STUPID!??!!? let me know...you SEEM to have this thing ALL FIGURED OUT..

it goes back to another topic....Seguin called us "MEXICANS" and "MINIS" and the ONLY sport we should be playing is "FUTBALL" crap like that doesnt fly!!!! i'm NOT dogging on White folks, i'm dogging SeguinMatador because he thinks that WHITE people are the ONLY ones who can win....I'm NOT the one making DIROGITORY remarks regarding race here....its Seguin...
Again with your spelling.
90 percent of the Valley is Mexican-American... what is the big deal? Some other Mexican guy came in that thread and acknowledged the same thing... are you ashamed? He didn't seem to be. White people don't mind being called Germans or Italians. I am lost on how that is offensive.
As far as me calling Hispanics small.. check it outhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Human_height It is closer to the bottom.

I have seen those teams play... there just isn't any talent or size out there. There are only a few top level coaches out there like Hill and Dodge... there area lot of good coaches all over the state.

This thread is old and I have made my point. I am done with this topic... you know how I feel. Good day.

to tell you the truth it has been brought up that the coaching is just as bad as the players in the valley that issue has been noted. and another note im half hispanic and what seguin says is true hispanc people are not that great at many other sports than baseball and soccer. dont take it to heart i dont. yes there are exceptions to this i was not all that bad in high school and my little bro will proly end up going D1. but in all reality not many hispanics will get a chance like me or him got. and one more thing what is with the the CAPS i know you have been on the forum longer than me but do you feel it gets the point across better for you ar something?

RGVBadBoy, why are you constantly attacking Seguin? I'm just curious why you are constantly on his case about what he says. You never provide any facts to ANYTHING, and if you look at it, the Valley and EP have not won anything recently. I know that when I feel Judson is being wrongly attacked, I throw out some facts to disprove what is being said. Now unless you provide to us some information as to why what he is saying is false, there is no point to your argument.

i dont attack him, i attack his statements....some of the things he says are pretty bad....i KNOW that the RGV is mostly Hispanic....i'm hispanic.....what facts can i provide, what stats can i give....all i can say is that Being MEXICAN or HISPANIC is NOT a bad thing....i know i WAS a pretty good Athlete back in MY DAY, i'm still pretty decent for being a little older....
as far as what has the Valley or EP won recently....NOTHING....so WHAT HAS SEGUIN WON RECENTLY?!?!?!

if you think that ONLY MEXICANS live in the RGV your mistaken again....i would say ROUGHLY HALF of the population 40 to 50% are anglo or WHITE FOLKS....with a RAPIDLY INCREASING NUMBER of African Americans....
dude make up your mind is there more white or hispanic people int he valley. and i ask again what is up with the CAPS

Luv rebels, Franklin didn't have a chance against ET. This game against ET was pretty much over in the 1st quarter. Don't know where you got they hung with ET.

the CAPS are to emphasize..thats all....chill...
as far as race %s in the RGV, they vary from town to town...i'm from Sharyland, when i was in HS, ALOT of the kids were white, i would say maybe 40%.....when you go to other parts like Brownsville or PSJA areas its better than 90% hispanic....i would say McAllen is another town with a large caucasion population.....but if you get into the RGV as a WHOLE your looking at probably 85% Hispanic.....but AGAIN as a whole

He never said being Mexican or Hispanic was a bad thing. He said they aren't the best athletes. He also never said Seguin was the best at football. You can try and go after my school, but I doubt you'd have much success.

The main thing that some people overlook, and I think is partially the reason we never made it far in the playoffs, is in all those years the first out of town playoff games put us against the LSWC back when it was in its prime (not saying they are bad now, but I do not believe it is as good as it used to be).
It's alright; you can go ahead & say it--the LSWC is not in its prime anymore. However, it did produce a great team in '04, Abilene Hi. Ab. was prob. one of the top 3 or 4 teams in the st. in '04 but couldn't get past SLC. EP Montwood hung w/ Ab. pretty well in a playoff game in that yr. for the 1st half or so. I think the EP fb problem has alot of variables that make it a complex thing to analyze. I know that in recent yrs. Andress, Montwood, Del Valle, & Franklin have produced some pretty good teams, but for some reason they don't advance very far in the playoffs. Generally over the last few yrs., EP is either getting better, or the W. Tex. teams that play them or getting worse (it could be a little bit of both some yrs. here lately).
