I have heard that statement all of my life and have asked numerous people thier opinion. As such, the underlying important component there is that we will always need people that can teach others the fundamentals that allow them to go on and succeed. I know many great teachers that could have succeeded in the private sector but choose to the greater good of impacting young people's lives through teaching. However, the teaching profession is scarred by some that see the profession as a way to have summers and holidays off while having a powerful lobby to protect their "entitlements".

In my opinion, that is why this statement is interpreted so many ways.

I used to rodeo, but now I'm older, fatter, and a hell of a lot smarter so I don't climb on the back of a ton a beef anymore. However, I can still give a few good pointers to a young man or young lady that is still sowing his/her wilder oats and decides that they want to ride bulls in the rodeo.

I've used this funny old saying 100's of times and never once did I think it demeaned school teachers or any other teachers. I realize that it can be used to ridicule but I believe most folks see it as a testament to someones prowess and knowledge gained in their earlier years, which they now use to help others.

About a hundred years ago when I was still sowing my wilder oats, I participated in our local rodeo. Believe it or not, at 16 I still only weighed 117 pounds. I looked up and saw that bull coming at me, don't know how I did it, I know I didn't/couldn't jump that 8 foot slat-wooden fence and I don't remember climbing it, but I found myself on the other side of the fence thinking "I WILL NEVER DO THAT AGAIN." That was my one and ONLY bull ride. Funny that your post made me think about it. I did some really stupid things back then.

I had that damn hat in my hand and my spurs could barely reach his neck. I lasted through two bucking twists and on the third one he changed direction on his leap and sailing I went. Ripped my glove right off my hand and I landed a good 10 feet away. I looked up and saw that bull coming at me, don't know how I did it, I know I didn't/couldn't jump that 8 foot slat-wooden fence and I don't remember climbing it, but I found myself on the other side of the fence thinking "I WILL NEVER DO THAT AGAIN." That was my one and ONLY bull ride. Funny that your post made me think about it. I did some really stupid things back then.

I was 12 maybe 13 back then. Well I guess I had to be 13 because I had my motorcycle license. Anyway we were out hunting at the railroad tressel where it goes over the lakebottom. The tracks cuts the woods in half. Jerry and I were crossing over the tracks to get to the other side of the forest (we were squirrel hunting) when we heard all this pinging noise around us where something was hitting the rocks. We looked down the tracks and there was Jimmy and Rusty bent over laughing. We realized they had shot at us so Jerry pulled up his shotgun and shot at them. It was hilarious watching them dive off the tracks. They shot back and we dove off. We then sat there and shot at each other for 30 minutes or so.
Now I do have to admit that we had raided the local bootleggers cache the night before and between the 4 of us we had drank 13 or 14 bottles of Thunderbird wine. We were feeling no pain. That night when I went to sleep in my sleeping bag, I woke up feeling a burning sensation. Jerry and Rusty had picked up my sleeping bag, with me in it, and layed it across the campfire. I got out pretty quickly and the last I remembered before I passed out was watching Rusty, with a hatchet in his hand, chasing Jerry because Jerry had shot him in the butt with an arrow. It is amazing we all survived. I tell you, Jr. High never lacked for excitement. :cool:
