View Full Version : Kickers.....The unsung hero's of the game

They stand on the sidelines by themselves, they have less than 3 minutes of playing time in a game. Yet have all the pressure in the world on their shoulders when its time to win the game. Whether its a miss extra point or a chilly -dip on a fg attempt, kickers are a special breed. Talk about your kickers at your respective schools.

This is the difference maker between any two evenly matched teams!:)
Our guy Valadez brings confidence that inside the 40 yard line with no time on the clock.....we score.

Here are some sites of the 2 largest kicking camps in the US. There are many kids from Texas on here that are nationally ranked for 2009. 2010, 2011.

www.kohlskicking.com Look under National Rankings
Our man Cade, listed on both sites as a top prospect. A hell of a kicker and a hell of a linebacker. Commited to the Crimson Tide.

Wylie kicker Zac Ohannessian has shown himself time and again to be a valuable asset for the Pirates. Undoubtedly, his biggest kick of the 2008 season was the FG in OT to beat Hebron at Texas Stadium and advance Wylie to the next round of the playoffs. It was awesome! :)

Yeah and the fact that our kicker missed 2 extra points to cause overtime was a big factor, and then missed his FG attempt in OT.

Hi Mom!
Yeah, those were big kicks. Zac and Grayson (Wylie's Kicker's) have both been starting since sophomores and this will be their senior years. Great thing for us that we'll have 3 year starters both on kickoffs and FG attempts!

Jake Kane for Hightower is self taught. He has only attended 4 camps in his 3 years of kicking. Two of those were this summer. He will be attending the Kohl's National Scholarship camp in Wisconsin.
He has 3 game winning fieldgoals (all in playoffs) in his 2 years at Hightower. He absolutely thrives on the pressure. Should see much more from him this year because the offense will need to get ramped up.

Got to see the Pearland v Clear Lake Playoff game last yr. Dustin Hopkins, No.1 kicker in the nation ( 2009), going to FSU had a 25 yd chip shot to beat Pearland in OT. The Pearland crowd were starting to walk out the stadium knowing what was sure to happen. The snap went high and the holder couldn't get the ball down. He fumbled the ball and Pearland picked it up and ran for 75 yards to win the game. DH did his best to run down the kid but missed him on the 10 yr line. Although it was not his fault I bet Dustin would like to forget his last fg att in high school. U-tube has a clip of this but I could not link it. Good luck to Dustin at Florida State.

I was lucky to have been around two of the best high school kickers of all time at Lake Highlands, Phil Dawson and Matt Stover.
Stover was a few years older, but Phil was a good bud of mine and in my graduating class. He won more that his share of games for us with 50+ yard FGs in 1992. One to beat Richardson in a homecoming game and the other to beat Nacodoches in the state playoffs. Dude was awesome and the most clutch kicker I've ever seen.
LH has another good one this year in Jason Dann.

I agree, I have seen the kid, he is Gold! 50 yarder as a soph to win playoff Game against Cy Ridge. Is good from 53 yards out. Depending on the Hurricane Offense, he may be an all state candidate.

AND our All-Universe kicker missed a chip-shot in the 1st Katy-SLC game. If he hit it, SLC has 1 more and Katy has 1 less flag.
I don't think the fans from Longview see kickers as 'Heros'. A missed chip and botched attempt cost them 2 shots at a potential state title. I saw both and it still makes me ill, and I'm not a Longview fan!
Then again, kickers are tougher than I am. When the kids from SLC calmly walked out and hit a 45 yarder to beat SV in the title game,,,I don't have the cahonies to pull that off:)
It is most definitly a goat-hero position!

Good reason for it 99% of the time too......afterall; most times it is the sole purpose of the guy being on the team, so if he can't make a kick...................he's the only guy on the team that becomes "invisible".

It was 41 to be exact and Kevin Ortega said this after that game...
"It was the last game of the season, I wasn't nervous at all."
An exchange between Ortega and Chase Daniel.....
Ortega walked onto the field, and Smithson Valley called a timeout.
"They tried to ice him and he came to the sidelines laughing," Daniel said. "He said, `They can't ice me.' That little kicker has all the confidence in the world."
I couldn't do it.:)

The statement "Thrives on pressure" does not mean that he is perfect. He didn't back down and give up just because he missed a fg.
He had 92 points last year.
BTW, the first missed fg was a bad hold but all anyone sees is the miss and the kicker get the credit. Isn't your comment the whole point of this thread?

I like our guy at SA-Clark, Webb Williams - varsity kicker as a sophomore last year. Made solid kicks all year long. Decent range and good accuracy on FGs. Consistent with PATs. And had a good variety of kick styles for kick-offs. Consistent and just got better every game. And while he doesn't have great size or speed, he is not afraid to hit/tackle on kick-offs, if necessary. I expect this position to be a strength for us for the next few years.

Saw this guy at a Baylor camp this summer. Unbelievable. Don't know how he does in games but he should be #1 in Texas. Took a couple of D-1 signees to the woodshed with his kickoffs. Didn't notice him on too many lists but I'll be looking for him now.
Phil Dawson - still awesome and great guy. And kbarj, me likey Williams, too!.
