I see that SLC "DB" Joe Agnew verbally committed to Tulsa. That makes two early verbals for SLC this preseason. Wr-Jacobsen (BYU) & FS-Agnew (Tulsa).
I still think that SLC will have about 6 maybe even 7 kids sign D-1A this season (2005). Along with the 4 kids they had last season. That shows that last years SLC team that won the so called National Title had some pretty solid talent on it along with alot of good team players that filled certain key roles.
Congrats to the Agnew kid. I thought he was a pretty hardnosed DB last year watching him in a few games.

Agnew is a great DB and an even better kid. Matt Moody and Trevor Ashlock will also be bouncing around at safety. and for yall that dont know, these 3 kids can hit... very hard.

Good to know.. Dont know alot about those other two kids. I dont remember hearing their names last season.
Didnt Agnew older brother go to the Navy Academy a couple of years ago ?

For a team arguably the best in the history of SLC to have 4 recruits - and to say this year will have 6-7 seems a bit of a stretch. I can certainly see Renfro playing - but a D1 for him may well be track. Not dissing the program - just wondering who the other 4 or 5 are when there were 4 last year. Of course, that 4 probably doesn't include Luna? I'm sure he could have played football somewhere :)
As far as Agnew - I guess you choose to remember what you remember - but the one play I recall in our tilt last year was his unfortunate meeting with Mr. Lane when he (Agnew) had no initial back-up help - which was unusual on that day since SLC held No. 7 to about 75 yards or so. Agnew did what any normal person would do - he grabbed and hung on - but it was really funny to watch Jorvorski literally piggyback him about 8 yards until help arrived.

Last year..
QB- Chase Daniel - Missouri
Ol- Mitch Enright - SMU
Lb- Pete Fleps - Navy Acdmy.
Rb- A. Luna - Rice ( I count him because his a D-1A level Back.)
2005 season:
Wr- Jacobson - BYU
DB- Agnew - Tulsa
Wr- Renfro - ** Know doubt his a D-1A caliber Wr.
OL- Prince - ** Great size, and great footwork.
DL- Boydston -
LB- Benoist
K- Ortega
**QB- Mclroy -- didnt start last season but his D-1A.
Lets just say I'll be very surprised if these kids dont get D-1A offers over the coarse of the year.
I seen J. Lane piggyback alot of players the last couple of season. Several of those kids Lane piggybacked down the field are playing D-1A football now.

The best team does not always have the most D1 Recruits. I bet Irving Macarthur had more than SLC.
So it is not a stretch to have more D1 Recruits but not a better team.

What would you know about it?? Renfro, McElroy, and Prince have multiple offers, and Benoist and James Allen have both been offered as well. Agnew and Jacobson have committed already, and Boydston will be offered soon as many schools have shown interest. Justin Drescher is one of the Top 12 Deep Snappers in the country (after great combine results, selected to participate in the elite 12 camp), and is being recruited by Oklahoma. Ortega will be offered as well as he has done extremely well in camps and has a reputation for being a clutch kicker ala Smithson Valley 27-24.

That,s great to hear that a lot of your kids are getting or playing at D1 schools. We had quite a few ourselfs. But we are not looking at the big picture. There are a lot of others schools sending there kids to D1 also.Lets see how our kids are two or three years from now. That will be the measuring stick to all of our bragging. But the most important thing is for them to get an education, because they are only one hit away from sitting in the stands, and that something they can use sitting on there duffs. :)

VB Pack.. I agree with you 100%. The biggest thing is these kids should get their education. I'm happy for the SLC kids ( I'm not from SLC) but I'm happy for their kids. I do think they have some pretty darn good skilled kids on the team that can play football at the D-1A level. Will they go to schools like Texas, Tx A&M, Miami, LSU or some other BCS Top echlon team ??
Who knows...
But, they do have alot of very scrappy hard charging kids that can play D-1A football somewhere and compete at a higher level.
I dont judge teams on how many D-1A kids they have on the roster. I learned about 15 years ago those things dont mean squat. I've seen so many teams with tons of College level talent not even make the Texas playoffs or get beat in the first two rounds by some team that only had 2 or 3 D-1A kids on the entire roster.
I'm happy that SLC is getting noticed for having several good athletes on the team. Coach Dodge himself has said , " His always shocked how certain kids on his team get overlooked for D-1A scholarships." Now it looks like SLC is getting some 2nd and 3rd looks from many college scouts.
Heck, I'm proud of every kid that gets a great chance like a football "ship". They get to continue playing the sport they love and work on an education.
I do however believe that SLC has about 6 to maybe 7 kids that will sign D-1A "ships" this recruiting season.

You have to add James Allen - WR, to this list...his size & speed will get him noticed this year in the "dodgeball system"

Ya, I also think his got some very good skill from seeing him. He looks like a big (6-3/185) type of kid that has some good wheels and great hands. I think he gets overshadowed alot by SLC other two stud WR's.
Heck, I think there is even 2 other kids on SLC that have an outside shot of getting a D-1A offer. The DT- Adam Powers. The only thing that may hurt him is his size. He looks like his about (5-11/250) approx. and they may scare off some D-1A schools. But, his a scrappy player and has a non-stop motor.

I think James Allen could be one of the most underrated receivers in the state. His size, quickness, great hands, and route running ability make him a lethal threat that tends to go unnoticed. With most of the press on Renfro and Jacobson, this could very well be his break out year which would make the SLC receiving core mere mortals among secondaries

SLC "LB"- Patrick Benoist verbally committed to Vanderbilt (SEC). His a heady "LB". Last year I thought he and "LB"-Pete Fleps (Navy) made a strong LB core.
That's 3 SLC players already verbally committed this season.
Wr- Jacobson - BYU
Fs- Agnew - Tulsa
Lb- Benoist - Vanderbilt
I still think this season that SLC will have at least 7 kids sign D-1A and maybe around 2 more. It's going to be a good year for SLC players moving on into the D-1A football ranks.

I agree 100%. They may not go on to win State this season (odds are with them though), but they will have the most college level talent on this team then probably any other SLC team ever.
I thought the Juniors on last season SLC team really carried alot of that team even over Seniors like Daniels & Luna. The Juniors on the 2004 team were really special in their skill level. :)
PS. Dont get me wrong. Daniels and Luna made that team a State championship team.. The juniors on that team made it a GREAT TEAM.

if what you intimate is true, look out for another title run and at least 32 in a row. the srs from 04 team made up in quality what they lacked in quantity(there were only 30 on the team, which is the smallest class in a while or probably for a while too.)

it may seem like overkill, but there's a darkhorse lb who may get some offers too. tre reese will be sam lb and has looked great in practice. he's about 6-1, 200 and has great speed. don't know 40 times, but ran on the mile relat team that went to regionals.

Ya, SLC seems to almost be at the reloading point. They just find some new kids in the program that play the game at a high level.
I'm starting to think that if you took SLC (freshman & JV teams) and took the top 25 players and put them up against the SLC varsity team in a scrimmage game. The game would probably be pretty good.
Basically SLC has alot of solid depth (freshman, JV and Varsity) in the PROGRAM.

i'm not sure that is the case, but dodge does have a nice pipeline going. the successes of the last 5 years have brought lots of athletes out for football that might otherwise have stayed in some other sports. his coaches and his system is contagious. the community has all caught dragon fever.

I don't think SLC can have any surprises at this point. We pretty much expect them to have many very good players to reload with.

The thing I remember most about Agnew's play was the hand strenth it must have taken to hang on like that...that's what we were all talking about...Lane had already been little factor in the game....

luna ran over cb ashford ayers. ayers was a qb the year before. he was not exactly a monster. lol on another note, that was the best i have seen anybody stop lane in any game. the only other game where he was very limited that i can remember was garland in 03. slc did a magnificent job against him. they tackled him perfectly. great gameplan!! lane usually has at least 3 or 4 runs where he breaks for 20 plus yards and runs over somebody. not that game!! i was impressed and honestly surprised. slc did not have great defensive numbers going into that game so that is why i was surprised.

scott made ayers look massive. the dc did a great job, and the kids knew what it was going to take to stop him and they bought into it. lots of bodies getting to him in a hurry made a lot of difference.

speaking of ayers, he was the mvp of some down under all star game just recently. it ws printed in the lufkin daily news. well i think it was for more then 1 game. he was the qb?? he received a scholarship to a juco as a db not a qb so that surprised me he played qb??
well here is the article that explains!!
Former Lufkin star wins MVP award
By JOSH HAVARD
Friday, July 15, 2005
Just two years ago, Lufkin's Ashford Ayers called the signals for the Panthers, leading the team to a 9-2 finish and a district title.
He followed that by moving over to the defensive side of the ball for his senior season, making 57 tackles, five of those for losses, with two fumble recoveries and two interceptions.
But he recently showed he still had plenty of talent at the quarterback position as he was named the MVP of the Down Under Bowl in Australia.
The Down Under Bowl is an exhibition series in which teams from the U.S. face off against each other as well as teams from Australia and New Zealand.
Ayers played on a team that was comprised of players from Texas, Arkansas and Ohio. Ayers was the only Lufkin player on the team, and other Texas athletes included players from Marshall, Sherman and Terrell.
Ayers' team competed against an all-star team from Idaho, Kansas and Utah, as well as one against Australia and New Zealand.
Ayers had an outstanding showing in both games to win the MVP award.
In the first game, Ayers accounted for 380 yards (230 passing, 150 rushing). In the second, Ayers accounted for 350 yards (150 passing, 200 rushing).
For the two exhibition games, Ayers finished with 380 total yards passing and 350 rushing.
Ayers was also able to see several different sites, including the Ayers Rock, which is a geological wonder that resembles a red mountain in the middle of the desert. Ayers Rock is a place that Aborigines go to as a sacred place of worship and honor.
On the return trip, Ayers stopped in Hawaii for a two-day visit.
Ayers is now preparing for his collegiate career, which he will start at Kilgore Junior College in the fall, where he will play defensive back.
