SEOUL, South Korea – South Korean intelligence officials believe North Korea or pro-Pyongyang forces committed cyber attacks that paralyzed major South Korean and U.S. government Web sites, aides to two lawmakers said Wednesday.
The sites of 11 South Korean organizations, including the presidential Blue House and the Defense Ministry, went down or had access problems since late Tuesday, according to the state-run Korea Information Security Agency. Agency spokeswoman Ahn Jeong-eun said 11 U.S. sites suffered similar problems. She said the agency is investigating the case with police and prosecutors.
In the U.S., the Treasury Department, Secret Service, Federal Trade Commission and Transportation Department Web sites were all down at varying points over the July 4 holiday weekend and into this week, according to American officials inside and outside the government.

their 1 connection is controlled via a Chinese company.
And it's so slow in terms of cars, it be like comparing a nissan altima to a 1986 ford tempo.
And believe me with all the hackers in that area of the globe if north korea had any serious internet connection they'd be getting screwed with for ***** n giggles.

Thats, again, what you think. We don't know for sure. You maybe absolutely correct. Or you may be horribly wrong.
The Chinese aren't exactly against aiding the North Koreans, some don't rule anything out. I'd say there is more of a possibility of them having that technology than not.

hey guys, we are supposed to be worrying about Iran not North Korea, because Obama didn't come out strongly enough in support of the rioters.
But seriously, this is what I was talking about. N. Korea is the hottest place on the earth right now, geopolitically speaking. Next is Afghanistan/Pakistan, since Pakistan has nukes and terrorists.

North Korea is growing to be more and more of a likely threat each day. Kim Jong-Il understands that a shut-down of the internet, while no lives are lost, will spell economic disaster for the United States. If commerce websites had been hit instead of the government ones that were, millions of dollars could be drained from an already failing economy that would leave this country in shambles. In addition, a wormhole into the US government may mean that North Korea will attempt, and could have access to, government secrets that it could use against us in the future. The security of this country lies not in the surveillance of tea partiers and US veterans, but abroad, in places like Iran, and increasingly so, in North Korea.

Lehrer report had a decent report on this last night. Said it appeared to be old code from 2004, nothing sophisticated. Originated in S. Korea it appears.

The most likely scenario is that the North Koreans paid some people to do it for them. This is not a new or original thing to do. There have been some murmurings about the extent of the Russian government's involvment in DOS attacks gainst Baltic countries. The Russians, of course, blame overenthusiastic Russian patriots for them. I would be willing to bet that an outside bunch with some sort of ties to the PRK did this.

No, but they can cause significant problems and headaches for people who rely on the sites for their work. Especially if they are USG secure websites.
Estonia, one of the world's most wired countries, lost millions of dollars because of DOS attacks against their financial sites.
