View Full Version : UT QB Situation

I did not realize until this morning that UT only had 3 qb's on scholarship this year - Vince, Nordgren and Colt McCoy. Mack has been stacking up the rb's -- but has not landed many qb's lately. How might this change if Vince leaves? How about McElroy, Ponder, etc.? Kind of amazing that Tech has 2 studs supposedly committed and 2 good qb's coming back - and UT has 0 and 1 coming back right now.

Texas has two commits this year. Jevan Snead and Sharrod Harris. Both are excellent prospects and should compete with Colt if Vince were to leave. Snead is going to enroll in the spring and go through spring football.

Texas will have at least 3 scholarship QBs on the roster next year (4 if Vince stays)... all freshmen.

Obviously, I hope Vince stays, but I'm excited about the young guys. I think Colt has a slight advantage because he has spent a year learning and running the offense. Colt is really underrated. He doesnt have great size. Probably 6'2 190 or so... think Major Applewhite. However, he has all the physical tools to be a very good QB. He's also smart as hell.

I think any of the QBs will be in good shape because they will have so many experienced skill guys around them. Texas returns all of it's starting WRs and all of it's RBs.

I think we'll be seeing Colt McCoy starting next year. I don't think Vince is gonna come back. I think he would rather come back but I don't think he is.

I heard Mack Brown basically told him "your a ******* if you dont go."

Mack said the same thing to Cedric and Roy and Ricky. Say what you want about the guy, but he's honest. I'm sure he wants them all to stay and graduate, but he knows it's probably in the kid's best interest to cash the check while they can.

I did not see any Stephenville games this year, however from what I saw yesterday there is no question in my mind that this guy is a lot better than the Mustain kid from Springdale.
I was also real impressed with the Tibo kid who is going to Florida, looks like Stafford and Tibo are going to have some classic games in Jacksonville the next 4 years.

I'm excited about Snead also. I think he's one of the most under-rated of all the bigtime prep QB's this year. I wont be surprised at all to see Snead have a few great seasons at Texas. I'm just glad we got him at Texas.

I think Snead is a pretty solid athlete (runner), but he's got a nice throwing arm and is really accurate. With the athletic talent around him. Snead wont have to be a one man show but just direct a very potent offense and keep mistakes to a minimum.:D

Something exciting for Texas fans and the QB situation... Snead has already graduated and is enrolled at The University of Texas (as is LB Sergio Kindle). This means Snead will be right there this Spring battling with Colt.

Ya... he'll be on campus this Spring and going through Spring football. I wont be surprised at all to hear that Snead & McCoy are #1 and #1 coming out of Spring football.

The good thing is Snead comes out of the high powered offense at Stephenville and has directed that offense for I think (3 years). He's no slouch and I wont be surprised at all to see Snead running the Texas offense next season.

You can watch a lot of video of Stephenville and Snead here...

http://www.stephenvilleyellowjackets.com/footballvideo-g1s05.cfm

There are some very impressive plays there. I highly recommend watching the first play of the Everman game... you might see a hint of Vince there. Not only does he escape the tackle and roll out, he manages to throw a very good ball 40 yards off of his back foot no less.

The first thing I noticed about the kid is that he throws very well on the run. He can roll out or he can escape and still make a solid throw downfield. However, if he sits in the pocket and sets his feet, he has a rocket for an arm. It's been said that of all the QB recruits from the state of Texas this year, Snead has the strongest arm.

Now that Vince Young has declared.

I think it will be down to Snead and McCoy. I saw some highlights of Colt when he played in high school. He could run and throw the ball very well.

I was very impressed with Jevan Snead at the Army All American Game. He could run and throw. He stood in the pocket, and moved his feet around when he had to.He could take a hit, like when the East DL decleated him. Jevan got right back up and held onto the ball too I thought he was the better QB for the West. Even better then Mitch Mustain, who to me was overthrowing everyone in sight. Maybe it was nervousness for Mitch but I wasn't impressed.

It will be interesting to see who earns the QB job.

The reason he is not higher rated is his coverage reads. Good runner, great arm strength, accuracy is fine, and is a tough kid. But the kid has shown some trouble with coverage reads. That is why is not rated higher. UT will get him into spring ball and immediately start work on this. Also, he needs to learn film work almost immediately. This will help him with his coverage reads.

And finally, not sure what happened to Mitch during the AA game. Don't doubt the kid on one game however. Look at his highlight films and you will see he really is a top performer.

In regards to whoever asked about Sherrod Harris,

He is a mobile qb. We played him in our first game for the past two years. He manages to move out of the pocket and run a lot, he did quite a few big hits as well, and throws a decent ball. The team around him was pretty pitiful. They dropped about 12 passes in the game we played them.

Really, when looking at VY being a junior i didnt expect him to play at all next year, he might be good enough to get into the mix.. he just needs a little better ball. He's got pretty good field vision and is an excellent runner. With training, he might become maybe 3/4 of what Vince Young was. .

He's a really nice guy as well. Very much the leader of a lack luster team.

he has the credentials to do something big.

I never said I doubted how good Mitch Mustain is .... I dont judge players on All-Star games very much. You get to see some of the individual skill but the overall teamwork isnt in effect.

I've seen Mitch Mustain twice on tv (junior year, senior year) playing against Evangel and I saw enough in that game to know that Mitch Mustain is the real deal and loaded with tons of talent.

I do think Snead is one of the most under-rated QB's of the (upper echlons) prep QB's this season. I think Texas got a really good one in the program.
