Kirk Herbstreit Ohio vs. USA Challenge
Columbus, Ohio -- It’s “Friday Night Lights. . . Ohio Style!” when the defending big school high school football champions from Texas and Ohio square off in the inaugural Kirk Herbstreit Ohio vs. USA Challenge, September 9, 2005 in Columbus Crew Stadium, before an ESPNU national television audience.
Texas class 5-A Division One State Champion Robert E. Lee (Tyler, Texas), and Ohio Division I titlist Colerain (Cincinnati) meet in a battle of perennial powers, with national bragging rights on the line. Kickoff will be approximately 9 p.m. (EDT).
Both Robert E. Lee and Colerain enter the clash representing the storied prep football history of their respective states, as both Ohio and Texas have long produced many of the nation’s best grid programs and players.
The Ohio-Texas showdown is the second of two games of the Kirk Herbstreit Ohio vs. USA Challenge. The opener features another great match-up with a “North-South” flavor, as Central Ohio neighborhood rivals Westerville North and Westerville South kick off at 6 p.m. (EDT).
The Kirk Herbstreit Ohio vs. USA Challenge is being promoted by FSM Group Ltd., a Central Ohio sports marketing firm, in partnership with Herbstreit and marketing consultant Josh Johnston.
Herbstreit, a former Ohio State (1989-92) quarterback and now nationally-renowned college football analyst for the ever-popular ‘ESPN GameDay’ show, is thrilled to premier the event on the eve of what is perhaps the nation’s most anticipated college football game of the year, Texas vs. Ohio State.
“It’s Texas vs. Ohio, North vs. South, the tradition of Texas high school football against the tradition of Ohio high school football. It doesn’t get any better than that,” Herbstreit says. “And to be able to showcase two Central Ohio neighborhood rivals in the first game makes the evening all the more special.
“The eyes of the football world will descend upon Columbus, Ohio, that weekend, and I’m extremely thrilled to be part of it.”
The Kirk Herbstreit Ohio vs USA Challenge is expected to be an annual event, with a traditional power from the Buckeye State facing an equally strong foe from another state.
Tickets are $15 in advance, and $20 the day of the event. A ticket is good for both games. Ticket availability will be announced in early July.
“Tyler Independent School District (ISD) is appreciative of FSM Group, Ltd., for the opportunity to represent Texas High School Football. We are honored and are looking forward to our trip to Columbus.”
-- Danny Long, Tyler ISD Athletic Director
“It’s a great honor for us to represent Texas in such a prestigious event. Our community and our school are very excited about our participation. We just hope we can give Colerain a good game. Our team will be very young and inexperienced. However, we hope to be much better as we approach the game date. We are looking forward to our trip to Columbus.”
-- Mike Owens, Tyler Lee Head Football Coach/Athletic Coordinator
“Colerain High School is honored to be representing the great pride and tradition of Ohio high school football. We realize there are other schools throughout the state that are deserving of this opportunity, so we’ll do everything in our power to make fans statewide proud of our effort in the Kirk Herbstreit Ohio vs. USA Challenge.”
– Dan Moody, Colerain Athletic Director
“Ohio has such a strong tradition in high school football, we are honored to have been chosen to participate in this great event.
