It did hurt, he's lucky he did't get knocked out. A helmut to chin blow will get you 15 yards everytime in the NFL. The Big 10 refs really blew this one.

They showed the replay to that hit over and over again and every time my friends and i just laughed and laughed. Had nfl primetime gone on another week that hit would have been on "Jacked up"

If it had been a USC player hitting a Longhorn player in that same fashion, would you and your friends had laughed and laughed. Or would you and your friends had been cussing the ref for not throwing a flag.

Not a single USC player put any big hits like that all night.

That was a great, clean hit.and I'm not a 'horns fan
i'm sick of those who want to take the physicality( is that a word?) out of the game. If a player wants to risk paralysis, shouldn't it be his own choice( and is 15 yards really going to deter him?)
big hits are part of the game. Keep the skirts on the girls.

I recall a game several years ago, where a Detoit Lion tackler (don't remember his name) broke his neck in an attempt to break the K.C. Chiefs quarterback's neck. He was left paralized. Neck injuries are the saddest aspect of football at any level. Many careers have ended because of neck injuries. Most of those players were lucky to retain use of their limbs, others were not. It is a very sad sight to see a young strong man left in a physically vegetative state for the remainder of his life. As for the photo at the start of this thread, Cedric Griffin is fortunate he did not break his own neck, in his attempt to break the receivers neck. Unfortunatly, it is a part of the game, and as some of you have stated, "If a player want to risk paralysis, shouldn't it be his own choice," is a sad but true statement.

I said it "tongue in cheek" My point is that it was not a dirty hit. Trust me, I'm the last to line up to defend the Steers.
with 2 boys of my own, I already emphasize the need to "see what you hit"
My point is also that some are thrying to make it Flag Football( and it looked like USC's defense subscribes to this theory the other night)
Mike Utley is the player you are thinking of. His hit was not violent like many of the WR/ DB hits we see.

Yes, Mike Utley was his name, and he collided with his own teammate when the QB stepped up just in time to avoid the hit. What you are telling your boys is what I was told when I played youth football. My coaches always said "keep your head up, and see what you are hitting." That's good advice to give. I think alot of pro and college players today want to make the highlight film with big hits and they tend to forget the fundamentals of the game.
