Now I realize...that ESPN does in fact broadcast.....the Scrabble/Spelling Bee championships...as well as the "World's strongest man" competitions from 1978-present...and every worthless poker player in the history of cards........and horrible 'original' movies...and 24 hour coverage of the greatness that is THE University of Southern California.......

But ...........I say .......f'em............I am boycotting ESPN...as of right now.

They cover the College World Series.......so they have about 6 months to get their sh.. together....but as of right now..........

I am boycotting ESPN...........I will not watch it. I will block it.....and have one of my kids enter the password.....

I have always been a big ESPN fan. I don't watch any network TV. My TV rarely leaves ESPN. However, the events of the past month have left a very sour taste in my mouth. ESPN is going to have to work to get me back.

That being said, give credit where credit is due... Lee Corso. Sometimes he is viewed as the goofball that is there more for comic relief, but he has been saying ALL YEAR, since the Shoe Bowl in Columbus, that Texas is the best team in the nation. He picked Texas over USC before the game. Major props to coach Corso.

Chris Fowler is also one of the good guys. He's a closet Texas fan and also picked them to beat USC. Fowler has always spoken very highly of The University of Texas, Austin and Texas football. He has always proclaimed Austin the best stop on College Gameday's tour.

As for May, Herbie, etc., you guys suck.

I have always been a fan of Keith Jackson - love the sound of his voice calling a college football game - but last night, the bias coming out of that man was so clear it was making me sick. He clearly wanted USC to win that game - good thing he wasn't reviewing the plays!! Kirk H. was eating some major crow too - loved that. Corso has been saying all along - all season, in fact - that Texas is the team and I love him for that:) :)

I'm with you Wide. I rarely watch it anyway. A bunch of high school girls could give better commentary than that bunch of yeyhoos. I'm a firm believer in turning off the volume on your TV during a game and tuning into the radio station. Much better play by play and commentary that way ;)

No problem. I hope you know that I've been rooting for the 'horns ever since that Tech game. I said back then that I thought they were a team of destiny and I'm a firm believer that you have to root for the local teams. The 'horns aren't my favorite team, but they are from Texas and like a brother to the other teams in the state. When I see the UT players on TV, I see the guys we were watching in high school a few years ago. You can't root against them when they play outside the state. This title will make the whole Big 12 better.

You guys never knew I've been going back and forth with a USC fan from San Diego about UT-USC for the last 4 months. I think he played against Reggie Bush and Alex Smith in high school. He kept wanting to bet me about this game and I told him it wasn't right for a Senior NCO to take money from an airman!:p We were talking trash the whole game while we were working this morning. I told him before that Fresno game that they might give the Trojans trouble. Teams like Fresno don't have a big name that players gets up for, but they're good enough to scare and sometimes beat you.

As far as what you said, Wide, I can tone down what I say. I didn't see a great harm in my comment that you responded to, but I can agree with some of the sentiment that you expressed and others have said to you. Believe me, the only reason I said something was because I thought that might be something that went unnoticed and I thought it was a nice feat. We have a good amount of posters that are cocky in their own way and I don't think that's always such a bad thing. Praise is much better when it comes from others, but that's one thing we probably don't do enough as posters as a whole on the board. I think that's when posters decide that they're going to praise themselves (like you were doing earlier tonight:D).

Wide, congrats on getting the title you always wanted from UT. Finishing 2nd is nice, but nowhere close to as good as 1st.

I'm going to cut Jackson a little slack. He lives on the West Coast and does Pac-10 games. He's naturally going to probably like the Pac-10 team more. I know he's paid to be objective, but human nature takes over, too.

I didn't hear too much about "the interception" that was never reviewed. The ball was clearly caught when he hit the ground on his back.

You are absolutely on it with that call. Yeah, he was down and if they call it, they call it. It became a moot point because they they would have scored anyway. I saw lotsa holding on the USC o-line that was not called either and as you said, Drew Kelson was down when the ball popped out. Speaking of Drew Kelson, what an athlete he is. I remember he was on that Lamar team in 03 that gave Shore a hard time and scored more points against them than any team that year. Drew Kelson was a huge factor in that.

KT2000
01-05-2006, 08:33 AM
Good points on the Kelson play. I haven't seen any spot shadows for that one. Who knows how the game turns out if that play is ruled properly. Looking at a possible 10 point swing in the halftime score. 23-7 instead of 16-10.

However, some tough plays to rule on both sides. I'll be interested to watch the game back and see if Texas was throwing as many illegal blocks as USC was. It appeared to be all fair game in the trenches. Some very evident clips/holds not called. I guess you shouldn't expect those calls in a national title game. You'd think they'd be called tighter than a normal game but that's not the case from what I've seen in both HS and college. You should consider yourself lucky to get those calls in a championship game.

Favpack

Yes - Pac 10 Fouts reminded us of Vince's knee 50 times - but failed to mention the pick call.

The Kelson pick and the Jamaal 4th qtr. reception/fumble essentially negate each other - but I say the pick was clearly a pick - Jamaal's catch could have gone either way - and it went UT's way.

The game was relatively well called for college - and yes, thank goodness, the flags were not flying because I just get a feeling UT would have been on the losing end of it.

I've been a Longhorn fan since the 1971 season. They've never won a championship since I started rooting for them. There have been many let downs along the way and I'm certainly not as fanatic about UT as I once was... But last night was a thrill...

I'm confused on why there is so much animosity towards ESPN? USC DESERVED their pre-game recognition this past month because they had won 34 straight games and two National Championships. Until last night, and since 1970, Texas had been basically underachievers most seasons. Analysts are paid to considerer these kind of intangibles.

I hoped Texas would win but believed USC would. After watching the game I still believe USC has a better team and would beat the Longhorns 8 out of 10. But last nights game is all that counts, so congratulations to Texas, it's fans, and the state.

I would love to have heard what Mark May had to say after the game. All month long, he'd do his part about the greatness of USC. And when Holtz or someone else brought up a strength for Texas, he'd always have a retort for that person. I want to see him eat some crow.

If USC deserved the hype, then I expect the same thing next year when we go to the Fiesta Bowl with a 33 game winning streak.

a few points to ponder-

ESPN breaking up Patrick and Olberman was like Jerry letting Jimmy Johnson go, I've never forgiven either party for ruining a great thing.

Stuart Scott sucks. He is the Ebonic plague Before you call me a racist, I do enjoy Tom Jackson and even Michael Irvin at times, but Stu is like the kid who was always TRYING to be cool, and I forget which eye to look at when I am trying to pay attention.

I do like Mike & Mike in the Morning on ESPN. It is old school and real to life. And unlike some of the local radio shows in Dallas and Houston, they talk sports for the majority of the show.

Keith Jackson was terribly biased. It was like listening to the USC Booster Club broadcast the game. Almost made me cheer for the 'horns, but I was not drunk enough. It was amazing how he was wishing for the calls to go USC's way. It started for me when the FB for SC for leveled by the UT safety in a great football hit after catching the pass on the sideline( trust me, I'm not a 'horns fan, but I like great football) and ole Keith says, " he caught the ball and there was a foul that was not called on the tackle." I was like, "what the hell are you talking about? I guess he should go sit in the penalty box for making a great hit." It was as if he was offended that Texas dared to get on the field with his ole boys of Troy. Almost the same arrogance as some T-sips I know, but that is a discussion for another day.

The last thing on this rant is... the beauty of football is that you don't need announcers. Turn on some music or whatever, but don't let the bums in the booth ruin your game

I was wondering if I was the only one that noticed that. I was waiting for some of the bandwagon USC fans at school to say "Vince Young's knee was down" because I would have been, "What about the interception that was not called?" The replays were fair to both teams.

Was that interception by UT with the guy landing 1 foot on the goal line and the other hitting the pylon not beautiful?

The thing that I hated the most was that John Saunders presented Texas the Trophy. This year he said that Louisville was going to play USC for the championship, then changed to Virginia Tech. He also said that Mack Brown was classless by calling a timeout to kick a field goal at the end of the first half against Kansas.

Who else is with me on this???the espn sunday night football announcers were at their absolute worst last week. i would have given anything to have been able to reach into the set and throttle them. i won't be able to stand them on monday night football. they will destroy it i'm sure.

Funny overview of last nights broadcast:

That is very entertaining reading - a must read for a good chuckle. Amazing how the tide has turned against poor Pete Carroll though - what happens to Mack next year (or the next) without VY?
