Where else but Texas? You just won the NCAA championship and you thought enough to recognize Texas High School Football in your acceptance speech. Nothing but awesome. Says a lot about the coach. Texas. And where Texas High School Football ranks. Anyway, I thought it was a nice gesture.

What an easy way to recruit, while your on the national stage. Every kid in Texas wants to go to UT right now. Have them come to you rather than you to them.

I had fun watching the game and noting how many of those players I saw play in high school. For one year, at least, no one it Cali can brag that their players are better...

Just wanna give props to Pete Carroll on a great coaching job..and the quick speech he gave about if he had to lose to someone he'd rather lose to mack brown than anyone else...
And i wanna say what a piss poor comment by matt leinart at the end saying quote "they had what it took tonight but we are still the better football team"
Face it matty yall lost and got outplayed tonight..
But great game by both teams...definetely one of the better college games i've seen in a while.

I was thinking the same as I saw quite a few. I hated to see Tarrell Brown go out with an injury, but at least it was toward the end of the game. That was nice what Mack said about Texas HS football - speaks volumes about him.

That was cool - way cool - and, no, I don't think Mack was on top of his game enough at the moment to say it was "free recruiting" - he sincerely meant it - almost every player on his team played hs ball in Texas.

Mack doesn't need to use TV air time to sell the University of Texas. Anyone who's been to Austin recently and seen the campus/facilities knows exactly why UT is able to recruit this state so well. It just took the right man to put everything together, and Brown has proven to be it. Previous teams were basically one game away from having an opportunity to play for it all, and it was good to see the '05 Horns break through and bring the crystal football to the state of TEXAS.

I agree with a lot of the comments :-
Pete Carroll did credit to both Mack Brown and did say Vince Young is an exceptional player, the likes of which he had never seen before.
Also Mack Brown did give praise to Texas High School Football, which does provide a fertile supply of players for the Texas universities. I think it shows great class to recognize this. There is no doubt that Texas is one of, if not the premier regions/states for football. Most of the UT players came from Texas schools.

I smiled when Mack said that about Texas High School football. Of course we all knew it, but now everyone else does too. :)
I thought that USC did a terrible job of using the clock. Their last two drives went way too fast. Although I was glad for the Horns, because it gave them the time they needed to win.

Yes - for sure - the clock worked in UT's favor -- if USC has a minute in the end there... who knows. And, did you see the clock still running on the next to final drive for UT after Sweed steps out of bounds? 45 seconds were lost - which again ended up hurting USC - not Texas. Fate can be sweet at times.

USC did not do a terrible job of using the clock. On their last scoring drive they got an extra 15 yards due to a late hit on Leinart, this took the ball from around midfield to the 35. A few plays later they went for what they felt would be the final nail in the coffin. In a game like that one was turning out to be, you score when you getthe chance to. On their final drive some could say they should have run the ball more, however Texas D was geared around Lendale, throwing the football in my mind was a smart strategy, at that point Leinart was something like 13-14 in the second half and had they got a 1st down would have been able to ice the clock, they didnt and looking back it is easy to say they didnt use the clock to their advantage. I believe they did, I also agreed with the call going for it on 4th down. The Texas defense just made the plays when they were needed.

Oh the 4th down call was the only thing to do. The Texas D stepped up when they needed to. But I still am glad that USC ran their last 2 drives like that. I think it helped the Horns big time. Had they run the ball just a couple of more times and used up say 20 seconds. Who knows what the outcome would have been.

Texas was geared to stop the run, they picked up a few first downs via the pass. Had they run 3 straight to open up that last drive, then tey would have given the ball to Texas with plenty of time remaining and just as good field posistion. I believe the play calling and clock management was handled in the right way.

Pete Carroll made a couple un-NFL like decisions and I think it came from the belief that they were just the better team and would win no matter what (overconfidence)... I say un-NFL because one of USC's big advantages the last few years has been the "professionality" of their system.
Not taking the FG up 7-0 in the 1st quarter was one, and even bigger was PASSING on 2nd down on their last set of downs before Texas' winning drive. The pass was incomplete and the play saved Texas either 30 seconds or a timeout. A run there may have been all USC needed whether they ultimately got the first down or not...

Texas would have used a timeout in that situation then and by the end of the game it was evident Texas did not need all 3 of their timeouts. How did USC convert on the 3rd down of that drive? they threw the ball. You could say they should have taken the FG early in the game, however you could easily say if they convert that FD and score to make it 14-0 then we may have a different ballgame. The only thing about that call I question was motioning out to run a sneak with an empty backfield. Had they pounded it with LenDale up the middle I think they would have had a better chance to get a 1st than they had with Leinart running the sneak. It is always easy to question after the play was called, however I give credit and thought it was a great call on Carroll's part to go for it that early in the game.

Pete Carroll didn't know that Texas wouldn't need all its timeouts. Its just like poker, if you have an advantage you keep the opponent under decision making pressure. By selecting to pass Carroll BROUGHT IN the possibility the incompletion, which would take the decision making pressure off Mack Brown and is exactly what happened. You can't be sure that UT would have stopped it at that point and/or that they wouldn't need that timeout if they got the ball back... As far as not taking the FG, again, keep the pressure on Texas and MORE IMPORTANTLY, DON'T give Texas the CHANCE to get the momentum back. A 4th down stop, however unlikely (it did happen), changes the momentum... Regardless, I'm not arguing that they made a difference in the outcome, only that they could have and were un-NFL like in that they went against conventional wisdom and could have been the result of Carroll believing his team was good enough to defy any backfires...

The odds were USC's favor to complete that pass, the way Texas defense was configured they would have man coverage and Lineart was something like 13-14 in the second half. He runs the ball he also chances no gain and just as much time running off theclock after Texas uses a TO. With the way Texas was moving the ball, they were getting a first down rather easily, with the clock stoping on first downs, the TO is not as big a deal in the college game as it is in the NFL. I know it is important to have and utilize your timeouts, however you have the luxury of stoping the clock by gaining first downs and with VY scrambling the way he was, he was getting to the outside and would have gotten out of bounds. Carroll looked at it as in getting a first down and possibly another score. Can't fault the play call, you simply dance with the one who brought ya, and leinart had been on fire all half. They get that completion I guarantee you are not questioning or bringing up that call.

I was 100% for USC going for it on 4th down. Texas had not stopped them very much and USC could almost run the clock out.

USC did 2 stupid things in the last 30 seconds. They burned that timeout on the 2 point conversion when they needed a FG either way. That Heisman QB should've thrown the ball away early on the last play to get another play before time expired.

You didn't expect the stop - I truly felt they would stop them earlier on a 3rd and 7 - but didn't. I agree with the call - BUT - Texas schemed correctly because Bush was next to Coach on the sideline and that was mistake - everyone and I mean everyone knew White was getting it up the gut - AND - USC got an unreal spot on the play - probably by a full half a yard - he was stopped a yard short and the chain almost got within 6 inches.

All I'm saying is you have to consider the effects if it DOESN'T work... I think not taking the three (giving Texas some momentum) and not forcing Texas to either use a timeout or lose 30 seconds were critical miscalculations.
Had they run the ball just a couple of more times and used up say 20 seconds. Who knows what the outcome would have been.

I caught the Texas High School appreciation quote, and loved it! It reminded me of the old Southwest Conference pride! It is beautiful seeing a team of mostly Texans takin care of Business! I was also happy as a Texas Alumni! Good God, My High School and College win in the same year!!! Those young men made me proud! In my opinion, this years bowl games were the best ever. An ironic thing here is that Reggie Bush or Leinert may become Texans next year.
I disagree with Bubba Coach about Mack Brown not being full of himself. I've met him several times myself, and I would say he is more on the arrogant side of things. But, I also think that these attributes can contribute to being a good leader. It is good to see that Mack Brown has given up his Micro-Managing ways with his quarterbacks!
I really hope more Texas High Schoolers aspire to become Longhorns! My youngest son wants to be. My oldest son "thinks" he wants to be an Aggie. Could be worse.

The way he handles things is what every coach needs. You would never see him uptight on the sideline screaming his lungs out like "other" coaches. With Texas leading, 23-17, in the third quarter, Carroll spotted John Saunders and Aaron Taylor of ABC and Mark May of ESPN on the sidelines. He went over to them and said, "We're going to be fine."
Said Saunders: "What other coach would come over and say hello to three guys right in the middle of a national championship game?"

I have read a few articles that said he was on a cell phone with recruits while on the field during the game. One even speculated it caused a TO to be called.
"Hey, come play for me. In a few hours, the media will be lambasting my play-calling, questioning my clock management. Uhhhh let me get back to you, number 10 for UT is making my defense look like the Village People."

yea, it's really funny to say this, but, i would trade a Longhorn national championship anyday for a Longview state title.......
I think I knew that. I guess that is why you bleed green and not burnt orange. I will say it now - best of luck to Longview in the '06 season. I will be watching the scores with much interest.

appreciate it, brother...don't look for much, though---we lost alot of seniors at valuable positions.....we will be playoff bound, of course, but not much further after that............

Where else but Texas? You just won the NCAA championship and you thought enough to recognize Texas High School Football in your acceptance speech. Nothing but awesome. Says a lot about the coach. Texas. And where Texas High School Football ranks. Anyway, I thought it was a nice gesture.
That was a class act and a very good recruiting move. But, I do think it was Coach Brown saying, "thanks Texas high school football" because that's where this whole story begins. On the Texas high school football fields.
