If all the 5A teams in any district have to compete for one district championship, it makes no sense to separate them in the playoffs and have two 5A champs...
Having 4 teams qualify per district seems to have more upside than down...
If the UIL would: 1)Keep 5A at 32 districts 2) Allow the top 4 teams in each district qualify for the playoffs, and 3) create ONE super 128 team bracket seeded by district placing (1's play 4's, etc), then:
Upside
*good teams in very tough districts would still have a chance to make playoffs (Converse Judson obviously deserved to be in the dance)
*No District Champ would have to play another District Champ until the 3rd round. (Incentive to WIN district)
*Weakly supported schools could see more team revenue and interests by being in contention later in the season and potentially having a playoff game.
*Stronger supported programs could reap the revenues and rewards of having an extra game.
*ONE undisputed 5A champ.
Downside
*Unless bye's or a non-district game is eliminated, the season would last 1 extra week.
