Dayton’s Dugat ruled out of Bowl
By Dave Rogers
Published June 12, 2009
Parade All-American A.J. Dugat of Dayton will be a spectator at Saturday night’s Nike Bayou Bowl.
The all-state wide receiver was ruled out of the Texas-Louisiana high school all-star game at Stallworth Stadium after struggling early in the week with the effects of dehydration and anemia, his high school coach, Jerry Stewart, said Thursday.
Dugat, who signed with the University of Houston, first suffered dehydration during an early-morning workout at UH Monday, Stewart said.
Tuesday, after arriving in Baytown for the Bayou Bowl, it was discovered he was suffering from anemia and he was held out of practices. Dugat said then he hoped he could recover in time to play Saturday.
“But he went back to the hospital (Wednesday) night,” Stewart said. “The doctors suggested he not play.”
Texas coaches feel out-of-state recruiting push
Utah made a big push in Texas recruiting this past year, but they weren’t alone.
“I think more people just found out about Utah because they did so well,” Southlake Carroll quarterback Kyle Padron said.
Besides Westside defensive end Eric Dago and Pearland safety Jarrad Stewart, both Utah signees, the Utes gained a walk-on candidate in defensive back Chase Maires of The Woodlands.
Others out-of-state FBS schools with one Team Texas signee include Oklahoma State, Boise State, Iowa State and New Mexico.
“I think there are a lot more out-of-state schools making Texas part of their emphasis,” said Deer Park head coach Chris Massey, whose helping behind the scenes for Team Texas.
“What I’m hearing from them is they think Texas kids are so far ahead of other kids, that if they can get four or five kids out of Texas, that’ll make them a better team.”
================================================== =======
Hey Cajun, I'm guessing that Deer Park HC Chris Massey wont be on your Christmas mailing list since he basically said the following to a reporter, " I think there is more Out-of State College programs making Texas recruiting more important and that they are saying Texas kids seem to be ahead of the power curve and College Football ready right out of High School."

Texas holds on for 17-14 Bayou Bowl win
By Dave Rogers
Published June 14, 2009
Time ran out on Team Louisiana at the Nike Bayou Bowl Saturday night.
After scoring both their touchdowns in the fourth quarter, the Pelican Staters were trying to kill the clock for a shot at a tying 40-yard field goal when the ball slipped from the hands of quarterback Blake Matherne before he could spike it.
Though Matherne recovered, time ran out before the field goal team could get on the field and Texas held on for a 17-14 win to take a 4-3 lead in the annual high school all-star game at Stallworth Stadium.
Matherne, the Belle Chasse grad who was Louisiana’s Mr. Football, led his team in rushing (23 for 83) and passing (4-for-9 for 57 yards) and ran and passed for his team’s TDs.
Louis Hollier of Westlake led Louisiana with three catches for 49 yards and a score and Acadiana’s Bradley Brown had three cathes for 23 yards.
Southlake Carroll quarterback Kyle Padron led Texas passers with 12 completions in 24 attempts for 123 yards and Elkins’ Nick Harwell set Bayou Bowl records with eight catches for 82 yards and a score.
The second-longest field goal in the game’s history – a 42-yarder by Clear Creek’s Tommy Henshaw – ended the first half and gave Texas a 17-0 halftime lead, its largest lead in the series.
Louisiana defensive end John Graf of Notre Dame made the play of the third quarter, leaping high to bat and intercept a pass from Texas QB Kyle Padron and then returning it five yards to the Texas 37.
It took 10 plays, six of them short runs by Belle Chasse’s Matherne to get on the board for the first time, with 11:37 left in the game. Destrehan’s Ryan Rome added the first of his two PATs.
Louisiana was back in the end zone with 2:57 left on an unlikely 37-yard hookup between Matherne and Westlake’s Louis Hollier where Hollier snatched an underthrown pass from between two defenders.
That score was set up by a Texas error, an offsides penalty on fourth-and-one and the six-play, 65-yard drive was helped by a 15-yard facemask penalty.
Team Texas wasted little time getting on the scoreboard, taking the opening kickoff and going 80 yards in 10 plays behind Kyle Padron, the Southlake Carroll QB whose senior season ended in October with a broken hand.
Padron hit four of five passes for 62 yards on the drive, the last a tough diving catch by high school teammate Ryan Walker for 42 yards to the Louisiana 3.
The quarterback sneaked it into the end zone from a yard on second down and Henshaw converted for a 7-0 lead just 2:31 into the game.
And then, as is almost invariably the case in all-star games in which strangers get limited time to work together, the defenses took over.
Louisiana didn’t make a first down in the first quarter and Texas didn’t make another.
Then, to open the second quarter, a turnover reared its ugly head.
Texas linebacker Tahare Ray of Spring picked off a pass by Belle Chasse’s Blake Matherne and returned it 13 yards to the Louisiana 28.
On the very next play, quarterback Austin Pugliese of Cy-Creek found Elkins’ Nick Harwell wide open in the end zone for a score.
That is, it was a score after Harwell bobbled it twice and finally cradled it. Henshaw’s second PAT made it 14-0 Texas with 9:49 left in the second quarter.
Louisiana put together a 12-play second period drive behind Barbe’s Eric Cutrera that went from its 11-yard line to the Texas 35 before running out of gas. Cutrera was 2 for 4 for 14 yards on the drive with the big play a 16-yard run by Westlake’s Terrence Cahee.
The star of the first half for Louisiana was punter Ryan Rome of Destrehan, who three times had boots downed inside the 10.
With Texas starting its final drive of the half at its 4, Louisiana’s coaches twice called timeout after short Texas gains to try to get the ball back in good field position before the half.
That strategy failed when Pugliese hit Harwell for a 25-yard pass to cross midfield. Then Texas called a pair of timeouts, the last with 3 seconds left to set up Henshaw’s kick.

Amazing when you can take a team predominantly from Houston and take it to a whole state.
These aren't really the big time kids on either side guys.

Texas took it to them for a while, but the defense was out there far too long last night. I was very underwhelmed with Louisiana; looked on paper like they had a lot of talent but the playcalling was less than compelling.

Just an All-Star game Cajunater. Dont freakaa Out.
Several of the Texas D-1A players on the roster didnt play apparently for one reason or the other at the last minute,, so dont sweat it.;)
Like most years with this game (Bayou Bowl). I could put together an All-Star team of Houston area kids that live no more than 1 hour from Baytown.
QB- Russell Shepard (5 Star) - LSU
RB- Christian Michaels (5 Star)- A&M
WR-Greg Timmons (4 Star) - Texas
WR- AJ Dugat (3 Star) - Houston
WR- Darius Johnson (3 Star) - SMU
TE- Barrett Matthew (3 Star) - Texas
OL- Clint Naron (3 Star) - A&M
OL- Travis Swanson (3 Star) - Arkansas
OL- S. Barrera (3 Star) - A&M (Played in Bayou Bowl)
OL- Ivory Wade (4 Star) - Baylor
OL- Bobby Janisch (3 Star) - Rice
DE- Michael Brockers (4 Star) - LSU
DT- Thaddues Randle ( 3 Star) - Nebraska
DT-D. Sims (3 Star) - Houston
DE-R. Scypion (3 Star) - Houston (played in Bayou Bowl)
LB- Justin Isadore (3 Star) - TCU
LB- Philip Steward (3 Star) - Houston (Played in Bayou Bowl)
LB- Malcolm Johnson (3 Star) - A&M
CB- Marcus Davis (4 Star) - Texas
CB- Andre May (3 Star) - Okie St (Played in Bayou Bowl)
S- Craig Loston (5 star) - LSU
S- Junaid Dele (2 Star) - Ole Miss
K- Dustin Hopkins (3 Star) - Florida State.
So spare me the "Studs from Texas" beat Southland Conf "scrubs" from Louisiana.;) Only 4 of those 23 players above played in yesterdays game.
I could put 2 and maybe even 3 Houston area All-Star teams together that were better than yesterdays Texas Bayou Bowl team.. alright;)

Oh Boy, your desperation is comical for sure. Again Cajunater, it was just an All-Star game so dont sweat it too much.
By the way, there was many Texas SLC recruits and other D-1AA players on the Texas roster.
Again ole Cajunater, there was probably close to a 100 D-1A and 30 D-1AA recruits just from the Houston area this year to pick from.
Comes down to the whole numbers game again which you clearly have no clue about. There is 5 to 6 in Texas for every 1 in Louisiana. Just a #'s issue that is way over your head.
That's why Louisiana College teams like LSU, La Tech, Tulane, La-Laf, La-Monroe and the Louisiana SLC teams recruit Texas like there is no tomorrow.
PS, who is your next big NFL 1st round prediction or kid that wont be a "high draft pick," since your obviously a master NFL Scout.
I might do another quick ( I do mean it's quick) search to find another big "Strike" on your great NFL draft predictions ole master of SEC NFL evaulator. "Ha-Ha-Ha-ha."

Calm down, cajun. This one all-star game of players thrown together with coaches they've probably never played under doesn't mean Texas is better than Louisiana.
The record of Texas schools vs Louisiana schools over the past few years speaks enough for itself. :D

I couldn't agree with you more. Very boring game, lots of big hits made it somewhat interesting, but neither offenses could keep me awake. It's unfortunate that Dugat kid couldn't play, I've heard tremendous things about him.
