No....I visted my cousins house not too long ago. He had a freezer full of them...the king sized ones. So I grabbed one and went sat in the garage. As I sat and began to eat it, he came out and said "What are you doing? those aren't for eating"....I asked what where they for and then he told me....I'll try to edit the story as much as possible so now is a good time to send the kids out of the room lol
Basicly, he said they are for pleasuring women.....and he get to eat it at the same time. He put's one end in his mouth....and well you know where the other end goes....lol He also said "When the peanuts start to cut her...she will let you know"
haha you went and sat in the garage

Fried Calamari :D
Squidman strikes again. Actually, two weeks ago my daughter ordered some calamari from Johnny Carinos in Katy and it was the best I ever had.
Mouth cutting foods? Anything dipped in wasabi. Not only does it cut the roof of your mouth but it clears your sinuses from the back of your ears to the top of your forehead. Brings tears to my eyes on the first taste.

Went with my daughter to Carino's at College Station. I like it a lot. Hope they do not go the same route as Chilis, PF Changs and a few others. Food is deteriorating along with the economy and the declining clientelle. The upside though is McDonalds and Wendys have picked up the Market share. Both 24 hr drive thrus I stop at on the way home from work has been considerably more crowded lately. Sucks for me.

This will only work if the assumption is that after the recession ends, traffic will pick back up at the regular prices. I think that's a stretch.

That is sad. I don't mind paying more for food if it is good. You get what you pay for at the Outback. But now that you mentioned that we went there about two Friday's ago and was able to get a table in the bar right away at 7:00. The wait was only 10 minutes. This Outback used to be crowded with 90 minute waits on a Friday or Saturday night.
Hopefully they will get through it. I also love the Macaroni Grill. Have you heard anything on them? Aren't they owned by the Chili's (yuk) people?

In all honesty, it never made sense to me to pay 15 - 18.00 for anything these places had to offer on their cookie cutter menus. I think all these franchise owners should reinvent themselves and establish independent type places with much more imaginative dishes. And much more personalized service.
There is a reason why people dismiss these places so quickly in hard economic times. Frankly, when was there ever a time when a manager or owner from Mac Grill, Chilis, or Fridays came to your table and introduced themselves and made you feel like a guest rather than just a paying customer. People just do not develop attachments to these types of places.

That, and the fact that they just aren't that great. When's the last time you really, really wanted something that those places serve? Places like Chili's and Fridays were always bubble businesses. They were the McDonald's and Burger King of the bubble era-- they served a wide array of unoffensive food in a setting that was kid friendly and guaranteed to be the same everywhere. People went there to avoid the stress of cooking at home-- keep mom and the buckaroos happy. You didn't go there because you really wanted to-- you kinda ended up there.
Now people have discovered that McDonald's is the McDonald's of the post bubble economy and I don't know if we will ever get back to where we don't balk at dropping 50 dollars (credit card, of course) for a average Tuesday dinner for four.

Thinking about it, I really can't recall the last time I was in one of those places. Chilis has some veggie burgers that Mrs. Bird likes during Lent, so we went once then, and she got a card for a free entree at Friday's so we went there. Other than that I can't recall of a time this year that I ate at one of those types of places. There are independent and local places that I go to instead for BBQ or a burger. I can make salads, seafood, and most sandwiches at home, though I do have a local sandwich joint. I make steak at home unless Mrs. Bird and I have a really special occasion, in which case I am not thinking Outback.
What else do you get there?

You guessed the secret word. They can't really do much else than what they are doing lest they violate their agreement. Not to mention the national label and advertising and such.
The people who can really cook and create an atmosphere where customers want to show up always have the best places. I have found that most of the time they are rag tag looking although clean. Hard to come by nowadays.

I think the big problem is the limited amount of walking we all do, both downtown and in our own neighborhoods. So the restaurant industry in this state has to cater to that. All we get are gawdy type places with ample parking. As opposed to other cities where the streets are lined up with neighborhood pubs and little eating places with blackboard menus. A lot more choices. A lot more places people can identify with and develop attachments to.

I like the steak (small fillet) at Outback. Their Salmon is not bad and I love how they do their fresh veggies. It is more of get out of the house type dinner for us. Same with Macaroni Grill. Special occasions we go to Pappa Brothers Steak House or we like to find out of the way local places.
As far as Chilis and Friday type places I can fix pretty much anything on their menu cheaper and better than they can. Why go? Our children are older so we do not need kid friendly places.

Not entirely. New York, San Francisco and from what I'm told, Chicago have some of those characteristics. But seriously, how many places around here would you want to refer to yourself as being a 'regular' at?

There's a couple. I am a shameless promoter of Blue Baker in College Station. Proof positive that independent and genuinely tasty and creative does not stand in opposition to clean and convenient. I have a couple of BBQ joints I eat at regularly. Koppe Bridge hamburgers. Square One Bistro in Bryan and Mi Pueblito for Mexican (also Bryan).

Yes a lot of College towns would be good for that. Especially around the immediate vicinity of the main campus. Austin certainly would have a few places I imagine. I remember a business trip to Gainesville when our hosts took us to a really nice place directly accross from the UF campus.
My daughter swears by Koppe Bridge as well. Have never had the opportunity to go there myself though. I must remember to do that on my next visit.

I have to admit that B/CS is far better than most towns of its size because of the college population. (As was Abilene, which is a great food town). Back in the valley I tended to end up at the chain type places more often than I would have liked.
Koppe Bridge out on 2818 is great. I am getting rumblings just thinking about it. Best burger that I don't cook myself and FANTASTIC fries.
There are some very good higher end places in B/CS that are not chains, but they are places I only frequent on special occasions or on someone else's dime.

I like Cheddar's on 6 and University as well. Particularly the cheese and brocolli casserole on their sides menu. They just recently opened one in Spring, close to The Woodlands.
