Noah Cheshier, a tight end the last two

The 2009 fall football campaign got underway May 4 with the opening of spring drills.
The well-stocked Pirates reached the state finals this past fall behind the leadership of a hard-working group of seniors.
However, 2009 is most certainly not a rebuilding year. A bevy of familiar names from that state finalist team will fill the upcoming fall roster.
The group that heads into its senior season is accustomed to success. As freshmen in 2006, Wylie’s first year in 5A, they went 9-1 and finished atop the District 9-5A heap.
Seven players on that team jumped to varsity for their sophomore seasons and they should provide the 2009 Pirates with an edge in terms of varsity experience.
Head coach Bill Howard said the Pirates have depth in the skill areas, which should lead to another exciting season for the fans.
There are shoes to fill, but a significant number of the top athletes are back and looking to finish what they started.
And they are bigger, stronger and better with the added experience of the deep playoff run followed by hard work in the offseason.
Offense
Wylie returns their leading scorer in tailback Nick Knott.
Through 16 games, the junior accounted for 156 of the team’s 540 total points. He averaged eight yards per carry, rolling up more than 1,500 yards rushing and scored 24 touchdowns. He also had 256 yards receiving and two more touchdowns.
Howard said, “He has a lot of determination. He has great balance, and that’s the key for him, plus when he does get going in a direction, he’s very hard to catch.”
Knott is a solid blocker when he doesn’t get the ball.
Noah Cheshier takes over the quarterbacking reins. It is familiar territory for Cheshier, who ran the offense as a freshman.
Cheshier was an excellent blocking tight end the last two years. At 6-foot-4 and 235 pounds, he bulled through tackles for 10 rushing touchdowns last fall.
“Noah is a great football player. He will do a great job of leading the team. (Jerod) Monk was a very good operator. That’s going to be Noah’s biggest challenge — to become the operator that Monk was. He has the skills to do that,” said Howard.
The Pirates also return their top receiver, Colby Harper. Harper averaged over 11 yards per catch and recorded nine touchdowns.
He tallied 87 catches for 993 yards. Never one to shy away from contact, the sure-handed acrobat has added some weight to his frame this offseason, which should benefit him on those close encounters.
Howard said Harper is the undisputed leader among receivers.
“Colby brings a lot to the table. With the talent pool around him, I think he will have an even better year,” he said.
Knott, Harper and Cheshier were all 2008 All-District unanimous first-team selections.
Several roster vacancies need to be filled, but Howard said he has a good pool of candidates from which to draw.
Bennie Jones picked up real-time experience as a junior. The speedster has the versatility to play inside or outside receiver, as well as line up in the backfield.
Aaron Morris, an athlete with good size and speed, will take an outside receiver position. Jermaine Merdoch is another agile athlete pressing to take a spot on the receiving corps.
Other prospects include juniors Daterrio McClendon and Justin Johnson and senior Chaz Moncrief.
Chad Cole will line up at tight end.
“He has the right attitude to be another great tight end for Wylie. He has great hands and can play outside receiver,” said Howard.
Brian Williams has been designated the second back and, coupled with Knott, will provide a solid one-two punch. Both have exceptional speed, but Williams is more of a power runner.
Also returning is kicker Zac Ohannessian, the squad’s second-leading scorer with 100 points. He hit 14-of-19 field goals and connected on 69-of-70 extra point attempts. He will be a three-year starter when he suits up this fall.
Grayson Townsend, who handled the majority of kickoffs, will be back as well.
Defense
Linebackers should be an area of strength for the Pirates with three of four starters returning.
“This is a key position for our team,” said Howard. “We expect them to play at a higher level this year. Our district isn’t going to get any easier.”
Inside linebacker Toby Ball finished 2008 with 159 tackles, the second highest mark on the team. He recorded three sacks, two interceptions and was a unanimous all-district first-team selection as a junior after earning superlative honors as defensive newcomer the previous year.
“Toby should be one of the leaders on defense,” said Howard.
Both outside linebackers return for an encore season. James Carter tallied 113 tackles in his junior season. As a sophomore, Tyler Mathers had 78 tackles. They had seven sacks between them and each earned first-team, All-District recognition.
The opening at the other inside linebacker spot could be filled by Beau Cobb. However, Howard said there are others capable of sliding in there.
“Whoever takes this spot will have to raise their level of play quickly to keep up with the other three,” he said.
Howard said Matt Sandgren should provide a solid option.
The only defensive back returning, Zach Lowe, will take more of a leadership role.
Lowe, who will be a three-year starter at safety, tallied 83 tackles and had four interceptions as a junior.
“We have a very good young group of skill guys to put around him,” said Howard.
Chester Harris and Dickson Dickson step in at the corners.
Armando Cervera has secured the other safety spot. A couple of freshmen, Tyler Rice and Sean Watts, are vying to get into the rotation at defensive back.

AHMO hope they keep their hands to themselves;)
good luck to you boys!!!
Just what I like to see that Wylie will remain competitive in the district and may beat Plano this year? Not sure they will beat Allen but good chance if they keep improving? My prediction is Wylie 2nd in 8-5A and deep run if not to the state game again unless PESH and Plano make the playoffs. Then I'm sorry I think it ends for them at the Region I champship game.:D

This is good news. As evidence to last year, the stronger the district, the more big game ready you become. Being ready doesnt always equate into a win, but it sure helps a team's confidence when they are battled tested.
Man...Wylie is loaded....the rest of the state shouldn't even bother suiting up.

The biggest question mark for y'all is how do you replace Whitlock, Manchaca, and Jordan? Any of the three could dominate a game individually and they're all gone at once. Still, you have a great core returning and there's plenty of reason for optimism.

That's why the LB corp will be so important to this years defense. They will need to dominate games. We also have Zach Lowe returning at DB. He is a playmaker with speed who will be one of the leaders on defense.

I've heard Wylie will have some faster DBs than we had last year. Speed kills in the game of football. I don't think our DBs will be much of an issue. I'd think our biggest question would be whether or not our defensive line is worth a darn. Same with the offensive line.

Rumor is the "D" will run a 3-4. Still, I agree the "D" line will be the big question. I'm a little less concerned about the "O" line.

I agree, I have seen the oline this spring and they look pretty good. The OT's are not as big as last year but move much better. The Dline looks really good too as Whitehead looks 100% recovered from the knee injury. Last season the line was big and slow, this year they have much more agility as a group. I think the smallest lineman is 6'3 240 ish, but has really good footwork, great leverage, and good pad level most of the time.

I know what you're saying. Ringo is a good coach and he'll find a way to keep his players motivated. I'm sure one of his speaches will deal with how they were young last year and now is when they need to step up and show the rest of the world how last year shouldn't have happened. :)... but I think he'll have them ready.
What scares me most is that the last 2 years they only lost by a combined 8 points to us.

Agreed. The coaches at Plano have a lot of work to do. I saw some flashes, but they are SMALL. I missed the majority of the first quarter, the running backs for both teams are currently freshmen. Most of the OL and DL I saw were freshmen too.
This will be a building year, the following years will be really good.

From this board to the football gods ears!
I agree with the ringo assessment. That PESH team in 06-07 with Riko, Bush, Slater, Robinson, etc. should have made the finals. They knew Riko was just coming off the broken collar bone (not totally healed), yet didn't prepare the backup all week. Once Riko got hurt, they went with the same game plan and didn't adjust to the different stye of QB. That team was loaded and should have been in the finals.

I went to Wylie's scrimmage this morning since there will be no 1's versus 1's tomorrow night. I see a lot of promise from the team this year. Whether or not we'll have a true #3 receiver has yet to be seen - but we do have a solid #1/#2 RB duo. Harper had some nice plays this morning!
Defense looks good. A lot of speed out there and Toby Ball was putting the hurt on people. I'm looking forward to the spring game tomorrow night!

Yeah. They called it with about 2 minutes to go in the 2nd quarter last night. Basically how I see PESH this year is....
Their offense will be to basic - mostly bubble screens and highland parkish type curls/posts. They have some athletes, but I'm don't think that will be enough. If they can utilize their athleticism, I definitely see them as a 5-5 team. but if not... 2-8 is a definite possibility.

They do have Hoetger, Robinson, Kurchmeier (I know, spelled wrong), and the Skinner twins returning. Their JV was really good last year as well. I just didn't see much size on the line.

Regardless of how successful players in the skill positions may be, a team without a solid offensive and defensive line won’t get too far.
The Pirates are no exception.
Wylie sported a hefty offensive line in 2008 that provided good protection for the quarterbacks, while also punching holes in opponents’ defenses.
Two of the five starters — center Paul Finnie and guard Elias Umana — are back in 2009.
Over the last two years, the three-man front on the defensive side consistently shut down opponents’ running game.
Losses to graduation have been significant and include the No.1 5A defensive player in the state (Nikita Whitlock) as well as a unanimous first-team, All-District tackle (John Pittman).
Despite the losses, two regulars — Colton Whitehead and Devan Drake — will be back for another season.
Pirates’ head coach Bill Howard said, “The offensive line is going to be the key to our success and how far we go next year just like they were this year.”
Finnie (6-3, 290) will be the mainstay on the offensive line. The center was recognized with second-team, All-District honors after last season.
“He’s smart, and he’s developed into a great team leader. He’s done a great job of moving this team forward, and we are going to hop on his back,” said Howard.
Umana (6-1, 325) at right guard will be the other building block. The big man is coming off knee surgery, but the recovery is going well.
“The key for Umana to have a great year is to stay healthy. He understands the offense. All the wheels are clicking for him,” said Howard.
New faces on the line will include Ethan Lington (6-3 290) at right tackle. Howard said the talented young man has had a good spring and his confidence is high.
Protecting the quarterback’s backside at left tackle will be Jamal Jones (6-2, 250). Jones started 2008 on the JV Black but quickly moved up to varsity as a consistent sixth man.
Howard said, “He is very athletic and has long arms. He has good feet and has really developed.”
The left guard spot is by committee at this juncture. Chris Hill is one of several candidates, but he may swing over to right guard to split time with Umana.
Freshman Jess Crowley and junior Manuel Valdez are options on the left, as is Lucas Burns.
“There are a number of young men fighting for that spot,” said Howard.
Another factor on the offensive line will be tight end Chad Cole (6-2, 225).
Cole is smart and versatile. A good fit in the Wylie tradition for tight ends, he is an effective blocker but can also make some catches.
Even with the personnel changes, the defensive line should continue to play as a solid and aggressive unit.
Howard said, “I expect them to stop the run and control the line of scrimmage. All great teams start up front. It starts with Whitehead and Drake. It’s their third year on varsity. Drake started 15 games last year. Whitehead started 11 games as a sophomore while rotating with Drake.”
Expectations are high for Whitehead (6-1, 260) who will slide into the vacancy at nose guard.
Whitehead had a tremendous sophomore season and was rewarded with All-District recognition.
What began as a promising junior season ended with an injury in the opener at Hebron. Fully recovered, he is ready to jump back into the fray.
Drake (5-10, 230) is a talented and tenacious athlete. He garnered second-team, All-District recognition in 2008.
“Both have been big parts of our success,” said Howard. “Both are strong, both are smart and both are very good football players.”
Alex Wilkerson and Michael Wofford are competing for the other tackle spot.
Wilkerson played defensive tackle as a freshman but has focused on wrestling the last two years.
“He has a chance to be a really good player for us. There’s some rust, but he has a chance to be a contributor,” said Howard.
Wofford played running back for the JV Black last fall. The versatile athlete has bounced between offense and defense this spring, but he is solidly competing for a role.
Josh Jacobs is another player in the mix.
“They are going to have to step up and play. Once we get everything set, we can move some guys around to help our defense,” said Howard.

They'll eventually qualify and do fine at state. Cheshier was calling his own plays. Unlike most team where the coach calls 'em. The defense did fine for the most part, with the exception of nobody knowing when to take the deep middle - which lead to quite a few post route TDs by Plano and Pearce. I was telling coach to just call a cover-3 play and force them to keep it short... but he wouldn't listen :D.
Offense looked fine for the most part.
But... the two best offenses of the day - and equally worst defenses - belong to Richland and Guyer. 56-55 final in the qualifying game. Richland went for 2 as time expired to win the ball game.

Pirates’ head coach Bill Howard said he was pleased with the football spring training that culminated in Thursday’s annual Maroon and White game.
The varsity played 30 minutes of controlled scrimmage and then moved into 30 minutes of live scrimmage.
The first and second units rotated in and out to provide a look at all the players who will suit up for the Pirates this fall.
“Our No. 1 thing is we’re still growing together as a team with new coaches and some new players,” said Howard. “What we got out of the spring — we developed some depth, we stayed healthy and our coaching staff grew a little closer together.”
Wylie has traditionally built its program around a strong defense. Multiple high-caliber athletes are returning, but a few holes had to be filled with up- and-comers.
“We did a good job this spring of getting our new kids in the right positions,” said Howard. “From where we are now, we will only keep getting better.”
The Pirates have a solid group of receivers in Colby Harper, Aaron Morris, Bennie Jones, Jermaine Merdoch and Chad Cole, each of whom will provide an ample target for quarterback Noah Cheshier.
Running back is another strong suit. Nick Knott had a good spring and can be expected to put on a show this fall. The second back, Bryan Williams, looked powerful busting through the line for gains in the spring game.
Williams’ exceptional leg strength can be measured in his 400-pound squat capability.
Wylie’s summer 7-on-7 season, which began May 30 at Frisco Liberty, will provide additional time for the offensive skill players to work on timing and routes.
The Pirates host a June 6 tournament at Southern Methodist University.
They are scheduled for a June 20 state qualifying tournament at Mesquite and June 27 at Rockwall. Those teams that qualify will head to the July 10-11 state tournament.
Howard said the summer program will be another key to success.
“If our kids get out there and take care of business, they work out together this summer, and then when the fall rolls around, we’ll be ready,” he said. “For Wylie as a whole, all sports, boys and girls, we have to work hard to keep up with everybody else because they have more than we have. So we have to get more out of what we have.”
Howard praised the group of graduating seniors for their leadership.
“When you have a great group of seniors, they leave a legacy. That’s important because our kids know how to act, they know how to win, and they know how to do things right. Our seniors are going to be a big part of what we do next year even though they won’t be here,” he said.

Didn't get to see any of the 7-on-7 at SMU until the semi's, but I hustled over to see jesuit lose to a Garland school in OT and to see Birdville (?) beat West Mesquite. Jesuit's best WR was not playing (I'll find out why not since he was there acting as coach), and they were without a few boys who were taking the SAT. I heard they beat Wylie in OT and Grand Prairie, and I heard they lost by 5 to South Garland in a game that didn't mean anything, since Jesuit had already won their pool and since SG had already qualified for the tournament. I was impressed by Jesuit's defense, which kept them in the game throughout the semi-final game. Jesuit's offense wasn't clicking, but they had a chacne to win the game in OT several times. It was fun to see the boys out competing, even if it was very hot out.

Jesuit shouldn't have won the pool. There was an incorrect call resulting in a TD favoring Jesuit. It should have been a 4th down replay. So, I guess they could have scored, but it wouldn't have been a guarantee. That miscall by the refs shows the lack of quality in the Dallas Chapter. There were several times during pool play where the 3 refs got together to consult. Here's a post I made on TOC in regards to the miscall. Which was confirmed by another set of refs that I talked to after pool play.
But, none-the-less... Grats to Jesuit for qualifying. I really liked how Jesuit brought the intensity that Wylie did not bring. However, Jesuit needs to learn some new routes that aren't going to get them called for illegal screens.
"Jesuit was down in Overtime. The score was I believe 40-34. (Wylie missed their 1-pt conversion). 4th down, and Jesuit is on their 10ish yard line. Jesuit is flagged for an offensive penalty (illegal screen.) Jesuit's receiver caught the ball for the TD. After the catch, one of Wylie's receivers tried to strip the ball, but got called for unnecessary roughness as when he was going for the strip, he accidentally came across the face. The ref on the far side of the field said that the TD was good because the penalties offset. So, I was chatting with the ref after the play, and I said... and I quote "I think that it's a replay of the down when there's offsetting penalties." He said, "No - you don't know what you're talking about - go read up on your rules."
I refused to say anything and planned on asking one of the refs doing another game (afterward)....
I was talking to the crew that was doing the games on the east side of SMU's stadium (Wylie was on the west side the whole day), and I said "Hey, let me ask you something."
I proceeded to ask the 2 refs that were sitting in the shade what would happen if... and I didn't tell them how the previous ref had ruled the play (until after they gave me their answer)...
Both refs said "It's a replay of the down."... I said, "Awesome, that's not how the ref ruled it. He ruled it as a touchdown." Both refs then stated that it was an incorrect call.
The ref that made the "bad" call was a newer ref, and the guys I was talking to were fairly older and stated that they have been doing games for several years.
Well later on, during the Wylie/Grand Prairie game, there was a situation where GP was going for the 1-pt conversion. Wylie intercepted and ran it back. The refs looked at each other and said "is it 1 or 2"... Wylie's coach asked the refs what random number they agreed on and I said to coach "Don't ask him, he doesn't know... you know that!"... About 3 minutes later, the ref says "0 points for the return." I don't know if that's the correct call, and I don't really care. but long story short, they need to get these refs reading the rulebooks before these tournaments.

I would like to throw in there a couple of evaluations I have made on the team this year.
1 - The team needs to get into it. Not physically... What I mean is they need to play like they're nothing but scrubs. I think going to the title game last year has made the team think they don't need this spring stuff.
2 - QB play needs to tighten up. Noah is too lose and plays like Patrick Whit did a few years ago. Forcing the ball is going to cause too many interceptions. I believe Noah has thrown something like 9 interceptions over the last 2 SQTs.

I believe Noah has thrown something like 9 interceptions over the last 2 SQTs.
i bet thats the problem; the whole state saw how dirty the pile can get when playin them and now its just not the same unless you can throw a cheap shot.;)
hope toby put in boxin gloves away and puts on his shoulder pads; AHMO hate it if he gets thrown out of another game:D

You are absolutely right but intimidation does play a role as well
If it wasn't for Wylie's 12th man (ref) in our playoff game, you guys would have had a short run. Trust me, the bad taste from that game is all Hebron needs as motivation. :)
You can rest assured Hebron will not be intimidated and will be bringing a little extra wood to make up from last year.

While it will be a cold day in hell before that happens for the game vs my Eagles.... You mean the SEVEN time state championship Plano Wildcats. It is Wylie's homecoming, so there probably won't be any seating on the home side. But I'm sure you'll still get a good view of Plano raining on Wylie's homecoming parade yet again from the visitor section.

They should have won their pool the last 2 weeks. The 1st one, the ref called the result of the play wrong - as was verified by a few other officials. Last week, after going 2-0, they choked against Seguin.

Noah Cheshier is quarterbacking the
Wylie 7-on-7 team, which this past
weekend earned a spot in the July 10-11
state tournament.

gford@wylienews.com
For the last two seasons, Noah Cheshier’s primary responsibilities were blocking, running and catching.
As Wylie’s tight end in 2008, he did each quite well.
However, this fall his top priority will be getting the pigskin in the hands of others.
That’s because Cheshier will be doing something he hasn’t done full time since his freshman year: playing quarterback.
“It’s a little different, because every game I was used to hitting people,” Cheshier said. “Every play I would go up and hit somebody. Now, I’m just handing off the ball and reading linebackers and safeties.”
The incoming senior takes over the reins from Baylor-bound Jerod Monk, who guided the Pirates to a state title game appearance in 2008.
“That is a high standard to overcome. I think with the team we have right now we can get as far or farther and win it all. That’s what I want to do,” Cheshier said.
He took his first steps toward doing that during spring practice, and his on-field education continues this summer with 7-on-7 competition.
The league is a pure passing format, where the quarterback is allowed four seconds to throw and cannot run.
This past weekend, Wylie earned a spot in the July 10-11 state tournament in College Station.
“The one thing you can’t replace is reps, and he’s getting a lot of reps in 7-on-7,” Wylie head coach Bill Howard said. “That’s the purpose of 7-on-7. It really isn’t to go to the state tournament. It’s for the guys to build together and get reps.”
Cheshier added, “The first two (7-on-7) tournaments I was a little uneasy. Now, I feel like I have gotten back on my feet, because I haven’t played quarterback since my freshman year.”
He saw some time at quarterback last fall while backing up Monk. However, Cheshier notes he prefers tight end, the position he expects to play in college.
“Noah’s a winner, and he’s a leader. Bottom line, on Friday nights and into the fourth quarter he wants to win,” Howard said. “He knows he’s our best quarterback. He has a lot of God-given ability. He could go play quarterback at a lot of schools, probably at the D-1 level, but he’s chosen to be a tight end.”
Cheshier was a third-team, All-State tight end last season,
His 2009 task will be made easier by the return of several key skill-position players, such as running back Nick Knott and wide receiver Colby Harper.
“The greatest thing we’re doing now (in 7-on-7) is this is the part of the game where he can get better at, because it’s about timing at this point,” Wylie offensive coordinator Shanon Purcell said.
During the season, Purcell anticipates moving around the pass pocket to take advantage of Cheshier’s mobility, much like Wylie did with Monk.
On short-yardage situations, fans and foes can expect Cheshier to ram his large frame into the middle of the line.
“That’s good and bad,” Purcell said. “Next year, I’m worried about keeping him healthy, but on short-yardage next year it’s going to take more than one guy to bring him down. I’m not saying it was that way with Jerod, but Noah is a much more downhill runner, and Jerod was a much more elusive, shake-and-bake type guy.”
Running also will be an option when Cheshier’s receivers are covered.
When that happens, expect his tight end attitude to kick in, which means quite a bit of north-south running, and very little, if any, heading toward the sideline.
“That’s what we expect, but we have to be smart enough coaches to put him in a good position,” Howard said. “There are a lot of quarterbacks who make their living by running. He’s got to be smart when he runs the ball. He’s got to take care of himself. He’s got to know the down and distance too.”

Well if you promise that Wylie will lose to Allen during district play, I think I could move it up in the schedule...:p
So tell me about Wylie's QB situation. How much of their decision to use Cheshire comes from a lack of other QBs coming through the system? Are the other choices good but too short? How much of it do you think is Coach Howard's burning need to put a big man in the QB spot?

Cheshier was a QB on the Freshman team that went 9-1. I think that made Howard's decision a bit too easy. The other 2 backup QBs... I hope never see playing time.

That's a pretty emphatic statement on the backups. It is amazing what backups can do some times when they are under the gun and allowed to do it. No, I am not thinking about Tucker Carter although he certainly fits that description. All I am getting at is from my experience I try to never say never. :D;)
How fast is Cheshier? I see he has some real good offers and depending on his Sr. year he will likely get a bunch more.
I will have to check him out while I am working on the highlight video.

I said never... but what I meant is that I don't want to see them on the field this year unless we're up by 40 points at halftime. They are both undersized at about 5'`10" or so. One of them is really fast - D Alves fast... but, I'd rather stay away from an Alves type player. He really doesn't have much throwing power either. The other guy has a bit more power, but not any accuracy. So, either way... I'd hope that Cheshier stays healthy this year.

BALL A KEY TO WYLIE'S DEFENSIVE SUCCESS
<TABLE cellPadding=2 width="100%" border=0><TBODY><TR><TD>Wednesday, July 22, 2009</TD></TR><TR><TD>http://www.wylienews.com/userfiles//sp%20LB%20toby%20ball.jpg

Toby Ball attempts to break up a pass
attempt during 7-on-7 action this summer.
During his first two varsity seasons, Ball
earned numerous accolades, including
being the district’s co-Defensive Player
of the Year in 2007.
By Greg Ford

sports@wylienews.com
Toby Ball remembers how last season ended.
He and the rest of his Pirate teammates departed Houston’s Reliant Stadium on the short end of a 17-3 score in the Class 5A Div. II championship.
That loss to Katy still sticks with the incoming senior linebacker, and it’s served to fuel his desire to return to the title game and this time walk off a winner.
“It’s been tough. We’re hungry. Our motto right now is ‘Win one more.’ That’s our motto for this year, and we’re going to go out and win one more,” Ball said.
To do that, the Pirates will need Ball, who for the last two seasons had been an integral part of Wylie’s defense.
In 2007, as a sophomore, he was the district’s co-Defensive Player of the Year, and last season he was a first-team, All-District selection.
The personal goal in 2009 is to repeat as first-team, All-District and perhaps earn the same honor at the state level.
“He’ll be crucial,” head coach Bill Howard said. “He’s the cog in the middle. Not only is he extremely smart, he understands the defense, and he’s going to make the calls. He’s our adjuster, so he’s very important to us.”
Ball’s success is due to his work on the field and off. This summer, he’s been playing defense in 7-on-7 competition, facing a variety of passing attacks.
Off the field, Ball has hit the weight room, adding seven pounds of muscle to his frame.
However, being physical and athletic will only be part of Ball’s game this season.
The other half will be mental, as it’ll be Ball’s job to call the defensive signals.
Not to worry; it’s something he’s has been doing since his sophomore season.
“It’s kind of just there, and I’ve got it all in my head now,” Ball said.
Howard notes Ball is a smart player, adding that his understanding of the game is continually improving.
“He’s matured over the last three years, and he’ll make a good leader for us, and with his work ethic, he’s a good role model,” the coach said.
Howard added, “He can be as good as any linebacker in the state.”
Wylie’s defense was one of the tops locally and statewide in 2008.
Part of the reason was nose tackle Nikita Whitlock, the top defensive player in Texas. His presence often occupied two or three blockers, which freed up players such as Ball to pursue the ball carrier.
Whitlock graduated in May and will attend Wake Forest University. He’ll be missed, but Ball believes there’s enough talent on the defensive side to once again be a force.
“We can be really good. We just have to have some players step up and do their jobs. We had a tackle (Colton Whitehead) who went out last year the first game, and he’s be back with us,” Ball said.
After this season concludes, Ball will look to keep playing at the Div. I level himself. Currently, he’ll likely either attend Baylor or New Mexico.
“I wanted to try to make (my decision) before football starts, so I can focus on my senior year and get my team ready to go,” Ball said.

Only reason you guys win any games at all is your ability to recruit and Garland ISD's open enrollment program. Good luck this year!

Really? You ever see East St. Louis play? They used to kick butt in Illinois.
To be honest, there were only a few teams who I even know who they were up there. The school I went to flat out sucked. I played baseball for them and baseball is a lot bigger up there than football is. I remember going to a game in Washington, MO and there being visitor stands... that amazed me! lol
The stadium only seated about 6500 people though. The school I went to was a 4A (approx 1100 students) and we we lucky to get 5000 people to a game - both sides included.
I really didn't enjoy football when I was up there. I went to the games to support the school (even though we lost most of them) and on ocassion I'd catch a Saturday game if a friend of mine was wanting to catch a game with me.
When I moved to Wylie in 2001, I realized what Texas HS Football was about. I caught the fever at a good time as Wylie was transitioning from a crappy 4A team, to a mediocre 4-6 type team, to a 4 round deep playoff team. I came in the year Wylie went 8-2 - losing the tiebreaker with Pearce for the playoff spot. Since then, Wylie has only had 1 bad season and one mediocre season. (2006 going 3-7 and 2007 going 6-5)... As they transitioned into 5A
