View Full Version : Is this considered "sexist"?
For a restaurant to hire only women as hostesses? I imagine if they were only hiring men as hosts it would be considered sexist but is it sexist to hire only women?
The reason I ask is because my brother applied for a job today at the Oasis (he is 18 about to graduate high school) and was told he couldn't work there because he does not have waiting experience and is not a girl so he could not be a host. He tells me he was actually asked by the general manager, "are you a girl" and told "we only hire girls" after he responded with a no.
They obviously aren't trying to hide that fact but I think this is a pretty common practice. Is this not something that is considered sexist? If not why in the world is it not?

Most restaurants do have girls as hostesses. That being said a good restaurant would hire a guy and train them up to waiting tables. Sounds like this manager has issues. Tell him to keep going to restraunts to apply. I waited table all through college and made great money. Someone will be willing to train.
Yes, it is sexist.

I'm no lawyer but that sounds like a discrimination suit waiting to happen. Probably a non issue because no one has ever fought it but I bet the restaurant would lose if someone did.

It seems to me if you want to have an all female staff, you should, without consequence. However, if they're denying him a certain job because he is male, than yeah, that seems wrong.

if it's a specific restaurant type (like dicks, or hooters) i think they should be able to hire certain servers that fit the genre. but if they some sandwich shop, they need to hire anyone.

If it's a privately owned restaurant and does not receive taxpayer subsidies, the proprietor should be able to hire or not hire anybody based on anything they want to base it on.

Business people, who put up the money and run a business, should have the right to hire and fire any damn body they please.....if they want to hire midgets and cross-dressing males over 6' 5", that should be their choice and be damned if it's considered sexist or prejudiced or racist.
Those who put up the cash should make the rules...if you want to make the rules, get your own damn cash and start your own business that caters to restaurants that have guys wait tables in a "bubba" environment...it's called a modern ghey bar.....;) :D

Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 protects individuals against employment discrimination on the basis of sex as well as race, color, national origin, and religion. Title VII applies to employers with 15 or more employees, including state and local governments. It also applies to employment agencies and to labor organizations, as well as to the federal government.
It is unlawful to discriminate against any employee or applicant for employment because of his/her sex in regard to hiring, termination, promotion, compensation, job training, or any other term, condition, or privilege of employment. Title VII also prohibits employment decisions based on stereotypes and assumptions about abilities, traits, or the performance of individuals on the basis of sex. Title VII prohibits both intentional discrimination and neutral job policies that disproportionately exclude individuals on the basis of sex and that are not job related.

As it turns out, the LPGA is an American entity. It would seem like the law does not apply to them. But just like it's impractical for Hooters to hire dudes, I can certainly understand where the LPGA is coming from with this. Privately owned businesses or entities. As long as they pay their taxes, the gov't should stay out of it.

If they are only hiring girls as "hostess" then I would assume they would only hire boys as "hosts" so no, not sexist. That is to say, not sexist if they are hiring both types of workers.
YES it is sexist. They probrably shoudl call them all "hosts" or "greet and seat-ers" and then hire the best applicant for the job.
