By the way, I read that Lubbock is the largest city in the world that doesn't sell alcohol.

Just so you knew where I'm at on this issue, I think of all the vices in the world, the cumulative effect of alcohol is the most damaging to society. Like anything else that has been declared illegal, people are going to get stuff somewhere so you don't ever really stop it. I still don't think that's ever been a good reason to legalize stuff, though.

It's funny that "The Strip" is fighting this!:D

No way.

Liberalism is far more damaging...

The same people that promote liberalism promote conservatism. They want each side to fight the other side. That's just like all the Jews that put Jewish Hitler into power to kill Jews.

I have always hated the strip and their oligopoly on alcohol sales in Lubbock. The biggest reason I think it passed this time is 1) all the surrounding counties were going wet, and Lubbock county recognized the loss of tax revenue, and 2) folks are recognizing that it isn't real smart to make a drunk drive 25 miles round trip to go get his/ her beer

What's even funnier is when those folks that own the stores at the strip make some emotional appeal about how they've served Lubbock all of this time and blah, blah, blah... IT's BS. they've held a market captive and profited nicely from it. i hope they all dry up and go out of business.

Being a dry city/ county is one of the dumbest things ever in an era where 20-25 miles of driving isn't going to impede anyone's consumption of alcohol. I never saw any proof that being dry made Lubbock County safer. All I saw was a system that funneled customers to about 10 stores that held the market. It is freaking insane. people that want to drink are going to go buy their alcohol, wherever it might be. At least now they can just go down to the local United or Town & Country and grab their 12 pack, rather than making the trek out to the strip.

I don't follow you... I have never voted for a liberal candidate in a political election nor voiced support for liberal causes...

I don't drink, but my demand for soda is partially influenced by supply!:D It's a good thing I don't drink because I'd be trying to set records and stuff.

I didn't figure you would. My post was a few sentences, but I could write for days on the basis of that post. I was just trying to say that not everything is as it seems to be. There are forces of darkness in the background pulling strings to create emotions in the populace of the world. Many people in this world are actually partners with the people who are supposed to be sworn enemies per se.

I drink because I like a cold beer after a hard days work. or I like a beer with some steaks I cooked for the family on the grill. or I might even have a beer during a ballgame I am enjoying on TV.

Where I bought the beer has nothing to do with when I am going to drink it!

although it could very well influence how much I buy at one time, or where I get it; which is what the stores on the strip are crying about- they are losing their legal protection and are in no way prepared to keep their customers that weren't rightfully theirs from the beginning.

i think the closer access = drinking more is absolute crap. I will tell you from my trips to the LBK this year that when we bought beer we bought A LOT (at least 90 beers per trip) because we didnt want to run out and have to go back drunk. However, down here I can buy a 12 pack and it will last however long I need it to, and its not as big of a deal to go get more because if I need to I can walk to get it.

I think this is a good thing for the city

It's about time. Really stupid. I don't know what the goal of a dry city is because whatever it is I can't imagine it is actually accomplished. If anything it makes things worse because people buy in much larger amounts because there isn't as much access. I feel the same thing about the drinking age. As a 19 year old you buy just about as much as you can possibly get at a time, and drink it. As a 21 year old you buy as much as you want, which is always substantially less, and drink that. I am a strong advocate of lowering the drinking age to 18.

I actually agree in that it should coincide with other adult responsibilities that are gained as an 18 year old: Voting, serving in the military, ect.

That's cool. However, don't everyone expect anything soon. The Oligopoly on U.S. 87 have already filed suit to delay the implementation of the proposition.

Something about the boundaries or some B.S. like that...

Either way, beer and wine will be sold in grocery stores, but the Strip will try to delay this as much as possible.

I was pretty sure that the proposition would win.

Very surprised by the margins, though. Didn't think it would be 2-1.

The strip has been ripping people off for decades and their attempt to sidetrack this will get derailed and I think it is about damn time. Lubbock has been a joke forever by staying dry. The strip will dry up and I will for one be happy about it. Coming up from Midland, it is the the first thing I really see coming into Lubbock and it reminds me of a cheap trailer park. JMO

I think the Strip owners knew this was going to happen. I think they already bought some land in the city but now the city is pushing to get that zoned land off limits to selling alcohol. Or, thats what I heard at least.

I'll tell you what it looks like.

It's just like Big Sandy on 155 to Tyler, 31 between Kilgore and Tyler, and 59 between Nac-a-roaches and Lufkin. In each case, the beer joints/strip joints are on the county line with a dry county.

It's going to cost them money, either way. They have to pay to move and they'll lose a lot of market share. That's a lot of money in a college town, especially for Tech, who is known for drinking.

since Lufkin went wet, amazingly most of the beer joints have closed down at the county line and out on 94 at the river.

The strip needs to do the same...

Here's a bit of a distorted pic of the Lubbock Strip in the day time. This is facing south, so just imagine an interstate highway( actually state hwy 87 I think) and feeder roads to the right of the lots in the picture. This road is actually the "strip road" on which you have your pick of about 10 beer/ liquor stores to drive through or go in. Then after your purchase, you hit the feeder road on 87 to go north back to Lubbock.
