Under Kiffin, Vols have lost 11 players

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- A total of 11 Tennessee players with scholarships have left the Volunteers football program under new coach Lane Kiffin, including four since the end of spring practice.

ESPN.com's Chris Low writes about all things SEC in his conference blog.
A team spokesman confirmed that wide receivers Ahmad Paige and Tyler Maples, offensive guard Darris Sawtelle and quarterback B.J. Coleman have left the program since the team's Orange and White scrimmage game on Apr. 18.

Kiffin, who was introduced at Tennessee last December, said during a Big Orange Caravan stop earlier this week that he only wants players who want to play for the Vols.

Tennessee is allowed a total of 85 scholarship players each season under NCAA rules.

Why are they leaving? grades? discipline? commitment? can't be playing time because the Vols haven't even played a game under Kiffin yet...

a lot of folks got ticked off up here when Leach showed up and caused some guys to leave, especially local favorite( Andrews, Tx) Shaud Williams.

Kiffin has the tools, now he just has to prove that he isn't one...

I guess in the Louisiana kid's case he was just tired of it...I didn't research the other 10...Seems like alot of kids though-11?...Looks like Kiffin was "ok" with him in this case...

(GoVolsXtra.com & Drew Edwards) -- Tennessee wide receiver Ahmad Paige will transfer to another program this fall.

Reached by phone Monday afternoon, Paige confirmed his plans to leave Tennessee, citing personal reasons.

“It's more of just a personal thing,” Paige said. “It had nothing to do with the depth chart, because that can always change. This is a tremendous place. I just want fresh start, and I look at it like I had to take a new journey.”

Paige said he spoke with UT coach Lane Kiffin several times leading up to the decision and that Kiffin said he would release Paige to any school he wished to attend.

“He's been really supportive of me,” said Paige, who did not catch a pass last year after redshirting as a true freshman in 2007. “It's nothing negative. He told me I was a great person and he'd support me.”

According to Paige, Kiffin offered to recommend Paige to any future coaches.
