View Full Version : I had some serious explaining to do to Mrs. Bird

So I'm at the grocery store with Mrs. Bird. A nice looking, nicely dressed lady a bit older than me sees me and Mrs. Bird and says "Hi, Bird, how are you doing?"
I didn't recognize her and did the whole "Ummmm....hi....I'm fine how are you..."
After a couple seconds it clicked. She was a lady who is on the master's team I swim with and who often swims in the lane next to me. Except that every time I have seen her, she's been wearing a swimsuit, swimcap, and goggles and now she's made up, hair down (I couldn't have told you her hair color), and dressed in a nice skirt and blouse. The first words out of my dumb mouth....
"Oh, I'm sorry XXXXX....it took me a little while to recognize you with your clothes on.":D

That's a nice story, man. Very funny. Out of curiosity, what is the age range to qualify for the Masters Swimming Category? Dara Torres has gotta fall under that right? She wasn't the one at the Grocery store was she?
And speaking of Olympic Sports. Vancouver is just around the corner. You me and Favpack will be arguing about Figure skating soon. :D

To be a masters swimmer you have to be at least 18 and there is no upper age limit. You just have to be able to swim a length without drowning! At the last master's meet we had some 80+ guys out there, was very cool.
Dara Torres might be doing masters now and she might have done it earlier, but just because you are over 18 doesn't mean you go do masters. If you are someone who is seriously aiming and trying to get to the Olympics or on the world circuit, then you swim what's called the senior circuit in USA Swimming (the organizing body for the US Olympic team). USA also does youth. When Torres was qualifying and prepping for her Olympic bid she was doing senior circuit with the college and pro studs. I think she's signed up to be a masters spokeswoman now though.
For those of us who are not quite at a Walter Mitty level of delusion about our ability, masters allows us to have the team experience, stay in pretty good shape (emphasis on "pretty" good:D) and exercise some of that competitive drive without taking things too seriously. It's a step up from turning laps but not quite the commitment level of doing the senior circuit with USA swimming.
I would love to go to Vancouver, BTW. Mrs. Bird and I are also seriously considering Sochi 2014. But I hear Vancouver is beautiful.

I have enough frequent Flyer miles to fly to Seattle. Vancouver is another 3 hours by car. Thinking seriously about it. No North American Olympics anytime soon. Soonest possible is Chicago in summer 2016. Might be the last opportunity to go to one before I kick. :D

Sorry Bird, all I have to say is "Better you than me." I'm sure you had an easier time explaining that statement to your wife than I would have had trying to explain it to mine.http://smiliesftw.com/x/faint.gif

Good luck on your swimming. Today my belly dragged across the bottom of the pool because of the two donuts I ate earlier that morning.
Vancouver is where the first 4 or 5 seasons of 'The X Files' was filmed.
Mrs. Bird will get over it and there will be many more faux pas in your future. So says my crystal ball.
