There is only a little over a year to go. I just have this feeling that South Africa will not be ready to host the event.

Aside from the fact, Stadium construction from various sites is still a problem, take a look at this chart and see the crime statistics of South Africa.

Now, I really do want to see the WC in 2010. I really would love to see the beautiful city of Cape Town and enjoy the games there. However, I would like the place to lower their crime! I would like a finished stadium. Yes, if I stay in the tourist areas, I should be fine. However, there is going to be a lot of people visiting Cape Town (a lot more than just a group of tourists) and the police may not be able to protect enough tourists and a signifigant portion of tourists may become victims of crime.

Yes, South Africa has hosted World Cups of Rugby and Cricket. Keep in mind, the amount of spectators for those events are far lower than what is expected at a World Cup of Soccer. Plus in the 2003 World Cup of Cricket, matches were also played in Kenya and Zimbabwe (why in Zimbabwe? Beats the hell out of me; no reason for that despiciable human being, Robert Mugabe, to be rewarded with a WC match and give him a setting to boost his image). New Zealand and England boycotted their matches due to safety concerns. The 1995 Rugby World Cup seemed to go off better but other sites were dropped because stadiums were inadequate and security issues.

The Confederation Cup will be the canary in the coal mine. If it is unorganized and poorly attended then the WC moves.

I just don't see this WC in South Africa panning out. And no, it's not like I'm hoping for it to fail just for the WC to come to the U.S. The World Cup of Soccer will come to U.S.; it's just a matter of time, and the back-up plan for SA might be England or Japan. It's not set in stone that the U.S. will be the automatic back up plan.

Seriously, though, I just don't see the World Cup being pulled off in South Africa. What y'all think?

I haven't been following it too closely, but knowing what I know about SA's institutional dysfunction, I would be amazed if they were able to pull it off without some serious headaches. It's really too bad, as SA should be a paradise on earth........

Germany has already been called the back up plan by Sepp Blatter.

They already have the infrastructure in place.

Cape Town is ridiculously scenic. It's somewhere where I would take a pretty lady to. Its national government, corruption and terrible crime holds Cape Town back and it's a damn shame.

(In fact, many countries in Africa should be a form of paradise or at least a place to see and thoroughly enjoy. Senegal is supposed to have beautiful coastlines. Uganda is beautifully green and don't forget about the Victoria Waterfalls. Durban in South Africa looks real nice.

Such a shame...

When would they make the call to move it?

I would think that would have to happen no later than this Summer.

The political atmosphere in SA is understandably toxic. The ANC is still living off their valiant efforts to end apartheid and is thus effectively immune from criticism and electoral defeat. Instead of ruling well they have put in line a string of leaders that are progressively worse in their pandering and corruption. Jacob Zuma is an atrocious person to lead one of the only countries in sub-Saharan Africa that even remotely functions. Many of the technocrats who could actually help them to put together a good, functioning government are still tainted by collaboration with the apartheid regime.

Truly a shame.

I would imagine they'll announce a replacement host in mid-July or August. Germany could be the backup but England and other Euro countries may hate that idea for it could push their bids back to 2022 or 2026. Europe would be hosting 3 of 4 World Cups if England gets awarded 2018. Hell, Brazil may not be ready for 2014.

If it is moved to German does South Africa still get the automatic bid?
Germany has already clinched and I know USA has too. Who else has?

BTW anyone see US Soccer's commercial's for the World Cup?
They are pretty sweet.
