The Charger forum had a discussion about this mock alignment list about a week ago. My concern is that the Chargers would lose two of their biggest regular seasom opponents. (Yes, they would play Manvel.) Alvin may go 4a, or move to a district where they could have more success.

It is still all guess, but I have heard from a couple of reliable sources that Pearland, and Dickinson would likely remain in 24-5a. Travel would go up for Pearland and Dickinson if you moved to another district. If the schools get input in to the decision, I suspect Pearland, Springs and Dickinson would like to remain together.

Yes you are right on that, this district is better than 22 5A and thats what you want to compete in the playoffs

I've been digging into the Texas City and LaMarque situation and what I've heard from sources who have spoken with the Super as well as other officials is that it's a "NO GO". LaMarque will never do this unless the state makes them do so.

Okay so you have Pearland,Manvil,Alvin,Brazoswood, and 10 other 5A teams in the Fort Bend district that make two seven team districts right?

Then you have 4-5 Clear teams which seems to be an interesting note of who may be with that group? Could it be Dickinson and LaPorte?

Who knows...lol

CSF,

Yep,

Few days ago I talked with a Dawson "person" who has ties to LM and other stuff and he also said "NO WAY". The feeling seems to be based on the school officials as well as identity issues concerning LM itself.

The district is wayy out of money and fewer students and fewer teachers is what's on the agenda and it looks as if only the state could make the final decision unless LM decides to make financial cuts in the "FUTURE".

I wouldn't even go there. Paterno was a GREAT coach who chose to turn his back on the **** of a 10 year old boy to protect his program. He's a child molestor by association IMHO.

Trahan is a good...but not great...high school football coach who is guilty of nothing more than his team not making the playoffs.

I fail to see the comparison.

Hey dude,

Back your *** up and note the fact that opinions are just that and your not entitled to tell me what to think or print here.

If you think I'm accusing anybody of anything then show me the proof.

As far as the playoffs go it does not make him guilty of anything by not making them. You stated he was guilty of something not me. You assume to know things but should ask questions first.

Trahan is similar to Paterno in the fact that he has been around too long in many people's opinion including mine. Why pay six figure salaries to him when in the last three years he has a 17-17 record. Why would you care if we keep Trahan as coach? You would only benefit right?

He's not a good coach and his days are past him and the sooner he leaves the better off the football program will be. YEA!!! That's my opinion and you can bet your *** I'm not gonna be holding it back.

I have been hearing more and more that Coach Trahan is gone and this was his last year, I think getting young hungry coach will really help Dickinson, if the rumors are true I wish Trahan well in whatever he decides to do.

I apologize for offending you. I didn't mean to imply that you were accusing anyone of anything. I just did not think that your play on names was was fair grouping of Trahan and Paterno.

"Guilt" is probably a bad use of words on my part. My observation from the games that Pearland and Clear Springs played against Dickinson is that the Gators have a lot more talent than the season record showed. Better coaching would have won games that should have been easy. Trahan's record suggests that he was more sucessful as a 4a coach. I wish him well wherever he goes, but for what DISD is paying him, he is out of his league.

Why would you care if we keep Trahan as coach? You would only benefit right?

I disagree. My observation is that playing in a strong district improves a teams chances of making a deep playoff run. If Dickinson and Pearland get moved to the Pasadena district next year, the odds improve for the Gators to make the playoffs, but the kids will not have been sharpened by playing in a tougher district. I would rather see a team go to the playoffs with two or three losses to good teams than to be undefeated because of a light schedule. I actually want to see the Gators winning in the playoffs, (except when they play the Chargers). I would not be suprised if coaches Heath and Hartman are discussing potential games against Katy and Cinco Ranch. However, had the Chargers gone D1, it would have been game on like Donkey Kong between those two.

Good luck with your coaching situation! I hope that we are alll still in the same district next year!

CLS,

Okay I apologize if "you" were offended but again we all should know that truth is stranger than fiction and in most cases I have "never" used my sources and stated what real truth is in the matter of Trahan.

He is a good father and has three well rounded son's who were raised in a polite and respectful manner. The family is a good one and that's pretty much a given.

Those that supported his movement here from Bay City no longer support the effort they made for a long list of reasons. This has been the feeling for a long time. The reasons are eveident for those in the know of sorts.

When a coach makes 109,000 base salary and is given a new stadium as well as a state of the art weight room most people would agree that everything is in place to improve. In this case it's just the opposite due to coaching.

I won't even attempt to tell you what very good people have told me because it would be hearsay on this forum but actually it could all be proven. Truth is stranger than fiction.

The real truth is the coaching stopped three years ago and lack of a coach to do the job has not been present. Now with a new Super and no more raises in the future it looks as if the money has dried up for the present coach. I'm assuming what he makes now is too much but a raise is what he would like to offset the economic hardships he's suffering in the new world economy.

Bottom line is he's not getting the job done with the talent he has and it's a sure bet he never will because he's not what he once was and never will be again.

Dawg,

You are correct in some probable coach getting the wrong message but actually we have no power to do anything.

Most of the posters support the Gators all the way but for years we have become aggrivated with everything.

We are just using our freedom of speech to show how we feel in an attempt to show why we want a new coach. We will probably not get anything and things will stay the same but we know that so it's a matter of dealing with what we have or rather what we don't have in terms of coaching.

Sometimes we as adults forget or fail to realize that the kids have little to do with the way the team is run. I do believe the coaches are the paid employees and do the decision making.

My apologies to anyone who I may have offended in terms of the "children" who play the game. My emotions sometimes fail to remember that it may concern a child who may be criticized by myself during the season.

My hope was to see a wonderful receiver who images Wes Walker of the Patriots as a receiver this year but he played QB. He did the best he could and kept many drives alive. His heart was in the game at all times and he is a true "GATOR".

QB.....My apologies to you for anything I may have infracted on the situation or anything I said that would make it appear I was not in your corner. I'm very proud of you in any case and you should try out for some colleges because you have all the ingredients.

One Last Note,

I was not asked to write this but I was emailed by someone who felt hurt about the situation. To that person I also apologize and hope you will forgive me if you feel it in your heart.

You are correct in that the kids come first. I have kids so I agree.

Dickinson football coach to retire
By Jordan Godwin and T.J. Aulds
The Daily News
Published December 14, 2011

DICKINSON — Dickinson Gators head football coach Warren Trahan has announced his retirement. Trahan made the announcement at Tuesday night's football banquet.

"It was a hard thing to do because these people have been so good to me for so long," Trahan said. "But I was ready to go and I couldn't be more excited."

Trahan's retirement is effective Jan. 30. He was brought to Dickinson in 2000 after previous years as head coach at Bay City and Cy-Fair.

Despite Dickinson's disappointing season where the Gators failed to make the playoffs, Trahan won his 200th game as head coach.

It should be pointed out that the kids receive the scholarships not coaches.

If the numbers are accurate? (see below) Dickinson's choice of coaches may have been OK but the numbers suggest the system is severely flawed. Odds say the school will make the wrong decision. I hope for the kids sake they make the right move.

I would consider three of these to have winning records, 53 & 52 are barely winning. What this means is that the coach selection process has historically had a 25% success rate. Clearly subpar. No wonder there has been such disappointment.

In the 73 years of DHS football, we have had 20 head coaches. 5 have had winning records: Gray 80% wins, Farris 70%, Loerwald (1990s) 64%, Ford (1960s) 53%, Trahan 52%

I would like to see a younger (late 20's to early 40's), passionate coach with a trendy outlook, take over.

A few names would be:

Thomas Rocco (DB Coach at Blinn - a defensive master-in-training and tough as nails kinda coach)
Craig Dailey (OC at Clear Springs - he's very passionate and knows his X's and O's)
Damion Hopkins (DC at Bellaire - the guy is very smart and will make things happen when he gets his chance)
Ryan Sewalt (DC at Tomball - the guy is young, dynamic, and knows how to get the players motivated), and
Andres Gomez (DB Coach at Klein Oak) - familiar with the talent in this area, has enough experience, and played for Katy HS - so he knows what a winner looks like)
Averion Hurts (Channelview's current HC - dude is the real deal and would LOVE the talent from the Galveston area)

Listen, if Lane Kiffin can be the HC for the Oakland Raiders at 31... any of these coaches could easily be the HC at Dickinson.

Dailey is the brains of the spread offense. He's also the QB coach and operates his QB School in the spring (early morning hrs). HC-Hartman is ALL defense! He played defense in high school and college (defensive back), and was a defensive coordinator for several years.. prior to becoming the HC at Clear Springs.

Hartman leaves the mega offense up to Dailey. Craig would be my #1 choice, if I were Dickinson.

Dickinson hires new football coach

By Jordan Godwin The Daily News

Published January 24, 2012

DICKINSON — A little more than a month after the announced retirement of legendary Dickinson football coach Warren Trahan, the Gators have found a proven leader to take his place.

The Dickinson Independent School District Board of Trustees approved the hiring of John Snelson as the new athletic director and head football coach for Dickinson ISD at a special meeting at McAdams Junior High on Monday night.

The board met with Snelson in executive session for less than an hour and passed the hiring by a unanimous 7-0 vote.

“Dickinson ISD has a vision to have top-notch facilities and a top-notch program, and I’m more than excited to help them accomplish it,” Snelson said. “Being the head coach of a one-horse town where everybody grows up wanting to be a Gator is a dream come true — it seemed like a no-brainer.”

Snelson replaces Trahan, who announced his retirement in December, and acting athletic director Tom Mooney, who has accepted the position of Director of Purchasing in the Dickinson ISD business office.

“We knew we needed to attract the best candidate possible,” Mooney said. “That’s our responsibility to make it the most attractive position available, and we added the athletic director title to do just that.”

Mooney spoke highly of Snelson’s leadership qualities and said he’s a likable coach who the kids will respect. SnelsonwasthePasadena Memorial head football coach from 2006 until the 2011 season when the Mavericks were 3-8 and 2-3 in district play, the first season he failed to make the playoffs as a head coach.

Pasadena Memorial, which began varsity play in 2004, went 43-37-1 in six seasons under Snelson. He guided the Mavericks to five winning seasons and five playoff berths, including a 2009 area-round loss to Clear Springs.

“I’ll bring an exciting brand of offense to Dickinson, but our goal is a 50/50 run/pass offense,” Snelson said. “I’m very excited about getting started.”

Snelson’s Mavericks won the Touchdown Club of Houston’s Class 5A Sportsmanship Award for the 2010 season, and he will serve as the offensive coordinator for the State of Texas in the Bayou Bowl under head coach Mike Jackson of La Marque.

“Dickinson couldn’t have possibly found a better guy to hire,” Jackson said of Snelson.

“He’s a great coach with a great track record for success.”

Snelson’s son, Bo, plays running back at the Naval Academy and will serve as the offensive team captain in the fall. Snelson played football and baseball at Southwest Baptist in Bolivar, Mo., and has been married to his wife, Mandy, for 23 years.

They also have two younger daughters, Clare,a freshman atthe University of Houston and Samantha, a sophomore who has a knack for hurdling at Pasadena Memorial.

Snelson earned an annual salary of $86,518 as the Pasadena Memorial High School Campus Athletic Coordinator and head football coach last year. Dickinson ISD Superintendent Vicki Mims said his salary at Dickinson has yet to be negotiated, but she speculated that it will be in the high-90s range.

“We wanted to act quickly but not hastily,” Mims said. “We think he’s the above-and-beyond candidate to take over our athletics program and football team.”

So they hired Trahan's buddy? Thats not the way to change the direction of the program. looks like the man who was screwing the program to begin with still has an influence. Why? One of these days, they'll find someone who puts the kids first and not the money and facilites. Someone who cares about the community, and goes above and beyond to help guide these kids in the right direction both on and off the field. Oh wait, there was that someone, but Mims wanted to go in a "different direction." Unanimous 7-0 vote? I highly doubt that. Looks like Mims has already been sucked in to the school boards dark ways. Thats disappointing.

The THEGREATONE TGO posted this about the new coach.....

I met Coach Snelson about 3 or 4 years ago. Good guy. Very passionate!!! Not an X's and O's book nerd, but he knows the game of HS football, knows how to motivate and can put the right people around him to make things happen. He's likely gonna emphasize attacking the perimeter and live with the Zone Read, offensively, and he'll implement fast defenses (33-Stack or 3-4). I know he said 50/50 run/pass (which I assume he means 55-45, run oriented), but his offenses lived on Zone Read and End-Around's. Dickinson's athletes will certainly be used... ALL OVER THE PLACE! He'll be strict with responsibility, fundamentals, and expectations. He'll run a clean program. He's a down-to-Earth kind of guy. The kind of guy that you can just shoot the ;) with on a Sunday afternoon!

Some of the best teams Katy has played in the past 4 to 5 years, during the playoffs, are Pearland (2010), La Porte (2011), Clear Springs (2009), Abilene (2009), and Pasadena Memorial (2007). That Pas. Memorial team (2007) was led by Bo Snelson and very good defense. If Bo doesn't fumble on the goal line (at Rice Stadium) on the Mavericks opening drive, Katy is in for a helluva fight. And THAT Katy team was a MONSTER!

I think Snelson will do well. He certainly has the respect of the teens, today. And, unfortunately, I do understand his move from Pasadena ISD to Dickinson ISD. Talent-wise/pedigree... Dickinson > Pasadena... and it's likely not that close! It is what it is!

I'm thinking the new coach can think for himself and coach the team the way he wants to right?

"Things Change" This coach has a track record of being a good person and a good coach. I doubt any former coach will make any difference is the big picture unless he's actually on the payroll right?

Coach Snelson will be the coach and the only head coach as far as I can tell and doubt some other former coach will be coaching him on anything more than getting him up to speed on the campus and facilities.

Welcome Coach !!!!

Who ever posted that is a moron, who cares that they were friends! Trahan had friends coaches all over the state.. I like the hire he wants to work on the bottom and work way up he wants to develope the JR high kids and get them ready for high school. Every great team does that Katy and Pearland are Examples! he also wants to encourage kids to not drop football after JR High that happens quit a bit here but he will change that! Look forward to him being here and I also have read many great things about him. Pasadena mem hated losing him but it's our gain! G.A.T.A!!!!

I can tell you that this coach cares about his kids and he will motivate them and bring them together. His son is an example of what he expects of his players. His son Bo could have gone to the Naval Academy on academic scholarship but went on an athletic scholarship. He runs a tight ship, he knows football both offense and defense, and he is a class act. You will be pleased when the 2012 season starts.

From the buzz I’ve heard around Dickinson’s new athletic director and football coach John Snelson, the guy is a winner.

“Dickinson couldn’t have possibly found a better guy to hire,” La Marque coach Mike Jackson said of Snelson. “He’s a great coach with a great track record for success.”

And it didn’t stop there among praise from Galveston County coaches.

“He is a great hire, a great coach and a great mentor for kids,” Clear Springs coach Clint Hartman said.

The people behind the hire couldn’t have been more pleased with Snelson.

“We think he’s the above-and-beyond candidate to take over our athletics program and football team,” Dickinson ISD Superintendent Vicki Mims said.

Snelson inherits a program at the perfect time.

He failed to make the playoffs for the first time in six years last year. The Gators had a similar streak come to an end in 2011. Their union could be just what the two entities need for success.

Leaving his hometown of Pasadena wasn’t easy for Snelson. People said he’d never leave Pasadena Memorial, and it was very emotional for him to come to terms of leaving. But at the end of the day, becoming an athletic director and head football coach at a program like Dickinson was too good to pass up.

Dickinson has some of the best facilities in the state, and there’s some serious talent on the way in the next few years. Snelson is poised for success.

Are you excited about the hire? I think Snelson is a coach — like Jackson — that the community can place its trust in and rally around. He’s replacing a 200-win coach in Warren Trahan, and he will coach his 100th game as a head coach at the end of the upcoming season. He’s sitting on 43 wins right now.

What’s the ceiling for Snelson in Dickinson? Better yet, what’s the floor?

I think he’ll be here, finding ways to win, for a long time to come.

We don't need to get into scheduling any top ten teams because we need to work on football basics first.

i, for one, am very eager to see whether having a good head coach can trump or overcome having ignorant, inept, unethical superintendent, board, administration and their cronies.

dhs got lucky to get snelson, but. . . sadly, i dont think he realized just what he was getting into. more pay, great facilities can seem great at first, but it'll be interesting to see where this goes.

any word on which coaches will stay? who's gettin the boot? edmonson now listed as "coach," not defensive coordinator. we know bennight is probably gone (hold your applause) unless he wants to go back to special teams coordinator.

i'm sure they'll keep hardilek, woods, douglas. what do y'all know?

Big poppa, for now we can only be optimistic, but time will tell!!! The Dickinson School Board has a way of dragging people to the dark side, but hopefully this guys track record on being a students coach is true. The school board will woo him and show him a good time, but hopefully he wont bite that apple. We are hoping Snelson can show them the good side.

If we finish next season with a positive reality that the community likes then you won't hear me talking about our record one bit. If we come together it will be better than a state title and the state title will follow just like it did in 1977-78 and almost another in 1983.

Was driving by the junior high today and noticed two kids walking towards the Valero store with backpacks in hand. These two guys were maybe 220 to 230 pounds and over six feet tall. Either 7th or 8th graders and with the physical build and height to be considered grown men.

I've been seeing a lot of this lately and wonder if we are back on the natural underground aquafers that were closed in the early 80's. My god man what's in the water?

The school colors were originally blue, white and red but black was incorperated and red was replaced. “I’m excited about it because it’s bringing back old school traditions.” said Mrs. Roque. Bringing red back will give our generation a new look for years to come. Andreus Bernard said “I really don’t know what to think about the color changing.” Most students really don’t feel affected by the color changing, but the athletes, the students most affected by the color change, are looking forward to the new color.
