Analogy: Dad buys his spoiled son a hot foreign race car. The son drives it around the area speeding and honking to draw attention. But people in the area have expensive cars of thier own(5a) and ignore the brat. So dad buys his way into the dirt track circuit. Son starts racing in rural areas (like the devils bowl) and the boy wins many races and is very proud of it. But the kid cant win the cup (championship) after winning the prelims. Seems that the country boys have better mechanics and drivers, when the money is on the table. But that dont matter, the kid wins many races, and sneaks through to win ONE cup over many many years.
Kid goes home, the dad buys him a parade, kid sits in the back seat holding up his ONE trophy. The expensive car has a big sign on it that says "WE BEAT GARLAND"

He broke his leg in the 2nd quarter of a playoff game and came back to play on it in the 4th quarter. He caught 3 passes while playing on that broken leg. He then came to school the next Monday in a wheelchair because it was so badly broken. Two years later, he broke his leg on a punt vs. Ennis. Again, he put himself back in the game to cover kicks later in the game with that broken leg.

The 63 and 64 Garland title teams were about the last bunch that could be called country boys. I mean, they were mostly city kids, but they lived in a city that still had a country mentality and country heritage...the town was growing up and leaving the country behind....those boys would still say to this day that they were a bunch of good ole country boys....but they were right on the edge of being city.

By the time I got to HS from 73-76, the country mentality had disappeared and was only a mirrage in the minds of us who actually grew up in the country and a faint memory of the rest of the kids.

I know HP considered us to be country in 64 and probably still does today, but I doubt that there is a single kid on the team now that has ever planted a vegetable, of any kind.

Garland did not play in a class, that went to the finals until 49, and lost to champs in the semis. Ennis and Stephenville have multiple championships in 4A since 98. Highland Park and North Crowly both have one.
