View Full Version : Insignificant Games Can Have Significant Consequences - Just Ask SLC and ET

Now that the champions have been crowned, it is interesting to remember that the result of a relatively unimportant game - DR v. Keller Fossil Ridge - had a huge impact on the ultimate outcome of the playoffs in both Division 1 and Division 2. Because KFR beat DR in the last 5-5A district game of the season, SLC went to the D2 playoffs instead of the D1 playoffs. Had DR won the game (as most predicted they would), SLC would have gone to the D1 playoffs and played ET in the first round. As such, one of the current state champions would instead have been out as a first round loser. And, but for DR's loss to KFR, either Abilene, Plano, Lufkin, or Katy would today be hoisting the D2 state championship trophy.

Funny how small stones sometimes cause big waves.

I had a similar post. You are completely right. 2 State Champs living 20 minutes apart would have met in the first round had Ryan beaten Ridge. As it now stands, we have discussions about which State Champ is better.

I am glad that SLC went Div 2 because that is where most of the best 5A teams went.

Aside from the better teams, the 16th game allowed us to break our 31 in a row win streak record. 32 sounds better. Also 63-1 is better than 62-1. What a great year. Seems like Midland Lee in Abilene was just yesterday.

The best thing(s) about D2 was 1 extra game to watch. Playing 4 undefeated teams and handing them their only loss of the season. Going 16-0 in back to back seasons. Playing one of the past dynasties of Texas football - Plano. Renewing rivalries; I-Mac, Allen, Abilene, Lufkin and most of all Katy. D2 was definitely the best Division to play in this season. Thank you Fossil Ridge.

Trinity owes no one anything. Had DR beat KFR and SLC would have played Trinity, then the discussion of who would have won the game would have been answered without any questions. However, since obviously district 5-5a was so week outside of SLC I guess we should thank the entire district according to you. I'm sure if the SLC/Trinity game would have happened and Trinity played "up" for the game and "heaven forbid" beat SLC.. then what excuses would have been made? If Grapevine/Plano could compete, why is it so unrealistic that Trinity couldn't have done the same. Not even any of the dragon supports who continue to also put down Trinity and say we owe anyone can answer that with 100% certainty. Especially, after Grapevine played SLC so close and didn't even qualify for the playoffs.

Think about this if you will.. IF DR was so good in that district, Why weren't they good enough to beat KFR in order to make sure SLC went Div 1, thus giving DR and everyone else a sure chance of winning the Div 2 championship. Your second place team in the district couldn't beat a 5-4 team at that time, let alone where District 6-5A had 3 teams at 9-1. 27-3 district 6-5a overall record of playoff teams vs 23-7 district 5-5a record of playoff teams. And remember district vs district - 6-5a won 2-1.

Yes, Trinity lost a game during the year.. but remember, they won the 5 in the state Div 1 tourney which were the most important and are state champs. Just as SLC won their division. SLC has had 2 perfect seasons..no one can take that away from them. It would have been a hell of a game, but we'll never know will we.

Some great rivalries. Lufkin fans were glad SLC was Div.2. Its a game we look forward to. We want to be the ones who finally break the streak:D

when I mentioned two perfect seasons... I was referring to the fact that they've had two perfect seasons in a row. I'm not questioning their past and 6 perfect seasons is one heck of an accomplishment.

Trinity owes no one anything.Trinity owes SGP for taking away a bit of luster from their great season. Their season is like a diamond that has a spec in the middle. Not a perfect stone.

A fantastic team and season nonetheless.

SGP played a hell of a game and deserved the victory that night. Yes, we have a "spec in the diamond" if you will. I guess if anyone wants to say Trinity owes SGP, I suppose it would be that SGP made Trinity refocus as the previous victories to that point were far to easy. None the less, that blemish is insignificant in the whole picture of the accomplishments for this year. Trinity simply can't boast a perfect season as several other teams who won championships this year. However, they can boast "State Champion"... No matter how many speculations about div strengths, would have, could have, should have or anything else anyone wants to throw out there.

Trinity was a great team. I'm happy they won 5A D1. Another title for the DFW. Had they gone undefeated, more discussion beteen Trinity and Southlake supremacy would occur. Don't get this wrong, Trinity deserves all the credit for responding to adversity after the SGP game. As a Southlake fan, I would have loved to see these two play and decide matters on the field. Congrats once again to the Trojans.

My3sons, Thanks. It is nice to get the recognition for what Trinity accomplished with out the "However" that is tied to so many of the conversations.
