for one of the smaller classifications.
The 02 6Man State Championship between Sanderson and Calvert.
When the teams went into the locker room at half, Sanderson only needed one more TD to "mercy rule" Calvert. BUT Sanderson's best player was injured just before half and Calvert came from behind to WIN!!
FINAL: Calvert 51, Sanderson 46

1992
Carroll 39
Vernon 35
The game featured the state's unanimous #1 versus the unrivaled #2. The two heavyweights slugged it out, trading blows until the absolute end. Dexter Butler was stopped at the goal line with little time left to preserve our victory. The game was played in front of a literally over flowing crowd at Pennington Field with people sitting on top of retaining walls, standing in the endzone and along the sidelines. It was a scaled down Carroll/Trinity from 06, only better, imo.

Liberty Hill and Gilmer 2007 state championship in Waco. Gilmer runs the opening kick off back and then Liberty Hill ran it down their throat all day after that. I like watching Liberty Hill over just about any other team out there. They are so refreshing to see in comparison to all the spread teams.

This!
And, you had a front row seat because, you were playing! LOL!
Mine is actually a tie! I got '92 Carroll/Vernon and '01 Everman/Forney! Just like Carroll/Vernon, Everman/Forney was a battle between #1 and #2. Not to mention, it was also played at Pennington, in front of an overflow crowd. DaBryan Blanton ran for about, 190 but, it wasn't enough. Everman won, 21-17!

Pennington is a great venue, though its getting a little long in the tooth. Back in the day, you put a full house in that sucker and you were in for a treat.

Either Gilmer vs Liberty Eylau in 2006 at Lobo Stadium (Eylau shocks undefeated Gilmer 39-36 despite Gilmer blatantly cheating at the start of the year) or Longview vs Waco Midway in the quarterfinals this past year.

Blanco and Van Alstyne state championship in Waco in the pouring down rain. Not the results or anything that made the game great but there were times you could barely see the field.

1980
Windthorst 8
Holiday 7
something akin to David and Goliath...
Windthorst is a town of (then)423 people, but somehow had 3 or 4 "really productive" years and we moved up to Class AA for the Fall of 1980. Holiday was the perennial favorite to win that District and always went on to be Pilot Point's first victim in Bi District. Holiday had some very good teams, but never got any pub because they always had to play Pilot Point first rattle out of the box in the POs.
Windthorst had a very scrappy team but was undersized and absolutely not picked by anyone to beat the Eagles. Windthorst went up 6-0 in the first half and in the third quarter, Holiday scored to make it 7-6, bad guys. Our offense had not done squat since our best RB went out with a broken leg, so it looked as if our boys might be doomed. Keep in mind this is when only one team went to the POs so there was no redemption found in second place.
Both teams traded possessions back and forth as the defenses just shut everything down. Late in the 4th quarter, a Trojan drive stalled at midfield and they punted. Holiday took posseession at about the 2 or 3 yard line. we were all thinking the same thing, the only way we're going to win is if we get a safety or a turnover right now.
1st down, Holiday ran into the LOS. No gain. 2nd down, QB drops back to pass:eek: and he gets sacked for the safety! It was BC over Miami! It was the Jets over the Colts! It was one of my favorite games ever!
That team had so much heart and grit. We went 9-1 that season, losing in the final game, 7-0 to a Billy Joe Tolliver lead Boyd team in a monsoon. It always made us wonder what they would have done in the postseason under the current system, especially with our RB returning in 2 weeks. We also wondered how we would have done if we had stayed down in Class A.

Dobie vs South Houston, both 4A schools, in 1973 for the District Title.
Dobie won 35-7(?).
SV losing to Denton Ryan, in overtime, in the 4A State Championship game in 2001 (is that the right year?).
Outside, Pourin rain, and a very good game, despite the outcome.
Took a couple of hours to get there, and about four days to get home, it seemed.

If we are talking sub-5A level, then the best "game" I ever witnessed was the Carroll-Vernon game at Pennington in '92. It was not so much a game, as it was a war, between two extraordinary teams. Fans 15 deep on the sidelines and behind the end zones, on top of school buses and sitting on the wall on the east end of the field. Just extraordinary all the way around!

Pilot Point vs. Celina. Back when both teams were good they had a big-time rivalry going on. Both teams were in the same district and both were undefeated going into the final regular season game. Game was played at Celina. Jerry Jones was the head coach at Pilot Point and G.A. Moore was the head coach at Celina. About 2500 people living in P.P., about 2000 living in Celina, and about 500 living between the two yet well over 7000 turned out for the game. Don't know how many the stadium holds, but I doubt it seats more than 4000. Had people 7 deep in the end zone, they pulled RV's next to the fence and put lawn chairs on top so they could watch the game. One guy even brought one of those sissor(sp) lifts and parked it outside the endzone to watch the game. The wind changed 180 degrees right at kickoff and blew at sustained winds of 40-50 mph all game. I don't remember which team, but somebody had a punt for -15 yds from where the punter kicked it. Tight game all the way and P.P. finally came out the victor to win district. P.P. was later upset in the play-offs and Celina went on to win the first of 5 straight state titles. Awesome game. :notworthy

I was there, I just didn't want to type all that this time....thanks for doing the leg work for me....;)
Celina in all orange and PP in all black...right before Halloween.....the greatest atmosphere for a game I've ever been at.
Remember the people on their roofs watching the game.....some people had 10-15 people on the roof.
Man that wind got cold.

I was in the press box, nice and warm where I was. That was the first time I'd ever seen a 2A team use a fogger (Celina) as their players entered the field and then the Pilot Point team all WALKED out in a single file, very business-like. Both teams trying to intimidate the other. Love 2A ball. Those stadiums are so small it almost feels like you are on the field itself. Up close and personal and man do those fans get into the game. Love it. :notworthy

I believe you are talking about 1998, Celina was not undefeated though. They lost earlier to Sanger in non-district. Pilot Point was upset in the first round by Howe. I remember the headlines in the DRC the Saturday after that first round game was "Howe did that happen"
I believe Pilot Point won that game pretty comfortably and that was the year they were led by Ryan DeJanet or something like that. PP I believe was ranked number 1 in the state in 2A when the season ended that year. It was alos the first of 4 straight state titles for Celina.

2006- When San Marcos knocked off Smithson Valley 35-34 in the first round of the playoffs. Nobody gave us a chance to win considering our record was 5-5 and we were playing them there.
2003- When San Marcos knocked off Westlake in OT 17-14. Lot of emotion in that game because that year we lost a great player to a vehicle accident. We ended Westlakes years long district title wininng streak and went undefeated in district. I was in tears at the end of that game.
2004-When SLC beat Smithson Valley in the state final at texas stadium. SV almost pulled the upset

Hey, that was 10 years ago. I'm lucky if I remember what I dreamed about last night much less what happened 10 years ago. This getting old crap really sucks. Still I was close. I didn't remember Celina losing to Sanger, but you probably know their record better than I do. Wasn't Sanger still a 3A school then? I don't remember how to spell his name either but that was the running back for P.P. I do remember the announcer mis-saying his name and calling him Ryan Degenerate. Got a good laugh out of that one. And if you say it was 4 titles instead of 5, I'll take your word for it. I wasn't a big Celina fan and I didn't keep track of their records. I do remember they were the second best team in the district but yet they won the state title while P.P.was already into round-ball season. :o

HAHA
It's cool man. I am getting older with each day too and I am finding my memory is starting to lack in some departments now as well.
You are right in that Sanger was a 3A then and they beat Celina by 3. I remember that because the school I went to, Liberty Christian, played the Bobcats the following week. They beat us 30-10 in a game that was 16-10 with 4 minutes left. You are right in that Celina did not win their district that year. In fact since 1994 I believe there has only been 3 years where Celina did not win their distirc, 98, 03 and 08. I do remember the PP RB Ryan Howeveryouspellhislastname was tearing people up left and right. They had another back in the backfield that was putting up huge numbers that year too. I had a buddy who started for that PP team at DE as a junior that year. I really wish we could have played PP and Celina while I was at Liberty.

The Moss Brothers, Chris and Jarvis, were pretty good as well. Jarvis was a first round pick by the Broncos!
The QB, if memory serves, was James Battle. He went to TCU, right?
And Yep, it was cold, especially if you weren't dressed for the rain. I was wearing a motorcycle rain suit on top of jacket, etc. It worked out good, cept for my dang shoes (which got SOAKED), and hands!

Either Gilmer vs Liberty Eylau in 2006 at Lobo Stadium (Eylau shocks undefeated Gilmer 39-36 despite Gilmer blatantly cheating at the start of the year) or Longview vs Waco Midway in the quarterfinals this past year.
Agreed on both of these. The Longview/Midway game was probably the most nerve racking game I've ever been to, up there with the Longview/Lufkin 3 OT game earlier in the year.
