View Full Version : Why do kids go to A&M?

Now Im not actually trying to start a flame war. I just don't get it. Perhaps because of where my loyalties lie... But seriously I don't get why they still get good players to go there. Heck maybe I just can't right now because I've had a few...
I understand A&M has tradition and history as well as a loyal fanbase. But they haven't been good in a decade. I get that they can play the whole well Sherman coached in the NFL card. I get they can play that even though College Station isn't exactly an oasis that they are close to big cities.
I just don't see it.

It's the tremendous amount of student body support, alumni support and "prima donna" treatment that the players get.

Some of the best resources in the nation. Fan and alumni support. Pretty good new coach.

As much as it hurts to say, the naiveity (sic) of the fans here is good and bad. You could call A&M fans stupid or guilty of low standards, but the fact that fans will show up no matter last season's record can draw some athletes.

I'm not an Aggie fan or a Texas Tech fan. Personnally I dislike both schools about the same, although I will admit you can get one of the best educations in the state at either university. But for a Red Raider to complain about College Station is a major belly-laugh. I've spent time in both cities and I subscribe to the theory that says the "best thing about Lubbock is seeing it in your rear-view mirror." http://www.5atexasfootball.com/forum/vB/images/icons/icon10.gif http://www.5atexasfootball.com/forum/vB/images/icons/icon10.gif It gets COLD there during the winter. Yeah but I always here people slam Lubbock like you just did in your post. But College Station like I said isn't an oasis. It's not any better a town but that seems to be glossed over. Why is that? I mean I realize it's near Austin and Houston. But that doesn't change the fact College Station isn't exactly Disney World.

This is true for most people. A lot of recruits who hear Lubbock suck come and like it because they realize they were lied to about it being like a ghost town in the desert. But then you got the other people... Like that Grambling kid who committed to A&M he said there was nothing to do in Lubbock so he commits to A&M? What can you do in College Station that you can't in Lubbock?

I find it hilarious that anyone would consider Lubbock a step up from College Station. Not that either are "bad" places but I lose cell phone service driving to Lubbock. Yeah, it is that far away from civilization.
You don't have to to be winning to get recruits. How do you think programs are turned around? A prospective A&M athlete can be assured that regardless of how bad the football team is doing that stadium will be packed full of supporters who could care less. That is why someone might want to go to A&M. Oh yeah and they might get a half decent education along the way.

Because College Station is green. Lubbock is a pretty crappy place with really not that much to do and nothing around. At least CS is within a close driving distance of something to do.

Thats exactly the kind of ignorance that feeds the stereotype. When was the last time you were actually in Lubbock? I guess you choose to live in Abilene because its "greener" than other places.
Lubbock is the hub of West Texas, we don't need to be in "driving distance" of another town to have fun. We have everything a big city has. We are in a world of our own and it is truly unique. Like I said, you gotta be here.....

I've been to Lubbock 7 times this school year. And no, Lubbock doesn't have everything a big city has. I'm from Abilene so I know what it's like to have fun without there being that many attractions as there would be in DFW, Austin, or Houston. I'm just pointing out that people that are used to that sort of thing would find Lubbock very, very boring.

Lubbock is a great college town and it ain't like college kids want to drive in to Houston from B-CS every weekend for a night of fun. It's either a road trip for spring break, or stay around campus for most kids.
Been to both towns and I see how a kid could be happy at both.
West Texas is so different from the rest of the state, it either attracts folks or scares them away. personally, the prospect of not playing in sauna-like weather through October would be very attractive to me, as a player, but that's just me.
Comparing our crowds is just freaking nuts. have you seen any Tech games in lubbock in the past 2-3 years? It's a madhouse and the team loves it. Kyle field honestly just isn't that imposing any more, unless you're trying to kidnap a dog or protect your package...
Some of you folks bagging on the Tech crowd will be the same ones griping about how hostile it is towards visitors.

Exactly. Do you think that if you can have fun in Abilene (which isn't too far off from your view of Lubbock) that you can't in a giant college town in Lubbock? Lubbock is a very fun city and yes, outsiders would say it is boring but I guess they just come for sporting events....

Heres a post from raiderpower showing a campus tour.
Here is a new group of campus pics and shots from around the surrounding area that were taken during lunch today.
This group includes shots of North Overton, the Marsha Sharp Freeway, the pedestrian bridge near Jones AT&T Stadium, the Fuller Track and Field complex, the old location of Thompson/Gaston Hall, plus various other shots.
The freeway is close to completely opening from just west of Quaker Avenue to Avenue L. The have all the lane markings on the payment the entire stretch of that portion of the freeway.

That being said the reason I love West Texas is because of the outstanding people I know and have met while I have lived here the last 16 years. I didn't slam Lubbock, I told the truth about it. I've been in both cities during the winter and there is no doubt, Lubbock gets colder. With the wind whipping through, I liked to have froze my you know what off. I don't like cold. I lived in Chicago for a total of 3 months, all during the blizzard of '70-'71. Chicago is a great town, plenty to do, wonderful people, but again, I almost froze to death. Like Lubbock, the only way I want to see Chicago in the winter is in my rear-view mirrow. Tech is one of the 5 or 6 best schools in the state. Lubbock is a wonderful town that offers it's residents many exciting and fun things to do. However no matter whether you accuse me of slamming Lubbock or not, if you are truthful you will admit, it gets COLD there. That was all I was trying to say. http://www.5atexasfootball.com/forum/vB/images/icons/icon7.gif

To answer the question, A&M sends plenty to the pros, has great academics (yes, there are quite a few who are concerned about it), has great fan support, great facilities, a nice stadium, etc.
Who did A&M send to the pros say last year and the year before it? Great academics? O come on. Some football players care about that but not all. Each university has the easy degree that athletes go for.... A&M is no different. Plenty of other places have great fan support, great facilities, and a nice stadium.
no. you're going to tech. that means you're stupid. and you're going to be a pizza boy. ****in' a.
My dad went to Texas... He gets my pizza for me and brings it home.
Man up! It gets cold but not for that long. Sure it has wind but you get used to it. I've waited outside in the snow and wind for basketball games. It isn't that hard. If people were going to school for climate there are plenty of better choices than say Texas A&M... any school in California, Arizona, Florida, or Hawaii leap to mind.
Same with basketball haha Did they even make the NIT? Oh, and it's hilarious they're claiming they're better at basketball when A&M beat them on their own court lmao. I guess when you're desperate.
Tech owns the all-time series vs A&M in basketball. Has more NCAA tournament bids... and maybe more conference titles. Im sorry but when did A&M basketball become the likes of UCLA, Kentucky, UNC, and Duke?

Recently there haven't been as many, but there have been many over the years. Martellus Bennet, anyone? Melvin Bullitt for example is shining. Terrance Murphy before his neck injury. Reggie McNeal. Jason Carter. Johnny Jolly. And further back are the likes of Shane Lechler, Dat Nguyen, etc. Sure, they had one year where they had nobody (under Fran's leadership)... And now a pro-style coach and OC will help.
And yeah, there are easy majors that most take... But I know quite a few who are engineering majors. And yeah, other places have the stuff too. So let me ask you: Why do people go to Tech? Or anywhere, for that matter? Different recruits have different reasons. Some like location. Some like the coaching style or philosophy. Some like the idea of immediate playing time. In some cases, they are legacies (Jeff Fuller, for example). Some like the facilities. Some have no other offers. Some want to go just because it isn't Texas (I know that's the reason that Malcolm Kelly went to OU...) Some go because they want to be a part of ressurecting it (Acie Law went because he wanted to help build a program, not go to an already established one... I know he's basketball, but I'm sure there are some football players thinking it). It just depends. Why do people go to Tech? For the same reasons.
And I didn't say we're with the likes of UCLA, Duke, Kentucky, etc. But in the past 4 years, we've been to 4 NCAA tourneys and won 5 games. Tech has done nothing of the sort. It's kinda the inverse of football (except we've actually won Big XII and SWC championships in football). We used to be really good but Tech has been better recently. In basketball Tech may have been good but now A&M is better. I mean, if you're going to live by that philosophy, I can say A&M leads the all-time series with Tech in football, has won a Big XII title and many SWCs while Tech has like split one once.

I don't want to man up. I'm old enough to know what I like and what I don't like and I don't like cold. And that "not for long" crap really blows. Any length of time in cold weather is too long for me. But you are right about the better choices. One doesn't need a "big city" to find stuff to do during college. Some of us prefer smaller college towns and the universities they host to the large urban universities. (I've done both.)

Nothing against the UT exeprience; although Austin is simply way too crowded for my tastes and has gotten far more so over the past two decades. As significant a factor as UT is in Austin, there is still a large city there with loads of other activities going on. Somehow state government comes to mind. That's why I have never thought of Austin as a "college town." Clearly the area immediately around the university has many characteristics, but just not the same as a town where the university is the identity of the town. There are few cities in the country that have more colleges and universities in them than does the Boston/Cambridge duo. You can't walk down the street without falling over a different student body (sorry for the pun), but I am not real sure that many folks think of Boston as a college town. But compare those cities to places like Chapel Hill, N.C. or Oxford, MS. True, the scale of the places is much smaller, but the dominance of the local university is correspondingly greater. Again, however, nothing against Austin per se. But along the same lines, I could easily see why someone might prefer a city like Lubbock or College Station to Austin.

I think this aspect often gets overlooked. Like you said, a large majority of the time it doesn't really matter. The city of Austin is great, but as it relates to most of my daily activities College Station is no different.
Many people also prefer a small town atmosphere to larger cities. Myself included. I grew up in Houston, and although I like big cities, there's something to be said for no traffic, less crowding, and other minor inconveniences associated with metro areas.
To answer the OP's question, there are tons of reasons to attend A&M, just as there are for UT, Texas Tech, Baylor, et cetera. You're taking the last 5 or 6 years as your only frame of reference. I could pose the same question about Tech throughout most of their history. They are a small college town, way out in West Texas, with bad weather and in a dry county. They have little football tradition, and are an historical also-ran. Why would a guy as good as Graham Harrell or Michael Crabtree choose Tech?
Well maybe they liked the coaches better, or saw an opportunity for more playing time, or wanted to be closer to home? Maybe they wanted to help build up the program, liked the campus and students there, or had friends going there? Maybe they got an early offer, liked the culture of the university better, or any number of other reasons?
A school as unique as A&M can attract just as many people as it puts off. Many people think the yells, traditions, and other aspects are silly or embarrassing, but you'll find a similar number loving what that brings to their college experience. I gaurantee that a young high school player will be impressed with the gameday experience of midnight yell, kyle field, and the enourmous amount of activity on campus during that time. It's something different and that can make for a very appealing draw for a large number of kids.

Huh? I don't get your point. You made this thread asking why kids go to A&M. I told you and now you're crying about A&M acting superior? I mean, I'm sure there are fans that do so, but wouldn't we have to beat tech of finish with a better record than them in order to be better? I only said we were better if we were going by the logic that tech is better in basketball because of what they did in the past.
Oh, and head to head in basketball, we won the series 2-1 this year. The tourney game was one game, we won here and there. And yeah, 06 we lost twice, but the years before that we swept. I'm not saying we're that much better historically. But recently, we've had more success while Tech has struggled.

Its my thread. Why can't I change the subject? I asked why people go to A&M. Because I don't understand how they still get good classes despite going through a bad spell. I still haven't received a good answer.
They got a loyal fanbase but a bunch of schools have good fanbases. They have a coach that formerly coached in the NFL. But they were putting together good classes with a coach who wasn't in the NFL. So I don't think it's the coach.
So basically it's all do to geography.... The fact they are close to Austin/Houston.

I think he gave a pretty legit answer and then you went off on how A&M people think they're superior... that came out of left field.
Let me just ask you a question. Do you think Aggies in general feel they are superior to Red Raiders?
How do you now understand it by now? Basically every reason any recruit chooses one school over another is given on here. Prestige, history, fan support, location, coach, education, etc. Is it so shocking that a kid that happens to be a pretty good athlete would want to go to Texas A&M University?!?
It's not so shocking. Now if this was 1998 I could understand it. But today? Not so much. I just don't think it makes sense outside of a few reasons that have been listed. Like geographical, legacy, etc... I mean you got Rivals articles saying if Sherman doesn't do well this season he could be in a very hot seat. If Im a recruit and I read that... I might look at other places.

Forget it! I've fought this battle a million times. In a few more post someone will try to tell you it's the quality of life thing. None can tell you what that means.

I'll approach this in an analytical way:
Some people use the "Close to Houston" myth. I call it a myth because traffic isn't very good in BCS and although it's 100 miles to Houston, traffic will also make it seem like 200 much of the time.
Yes, kids will live all the activities and the big university. Some kids just hate Texas and want to be an Aggie. I'm sure the 'Fringe benefits" draw in a few kids.
The stuff you can actually do in BCS isn't bad, but it's no better than very many other places. Generally-speaking, once you get above 100K people in a metro area, there is very little difference between the cities for about 90% of the stuff. The main difference is bigger towns have more of the same. Malls are generally alike and although it seems like 8 malls are better than 1, the 8 malls will have most of the same stores and items for sale. I still don't know the great thing about all these different bars and clubs. To me, they're mostly alike.
West Texas is a big area. There is some desert, but they don't have a desert in Lubbock. Right outside of Lubbock is farming. Lubbock has a more inviting landscape than Odessa if you like more trees and green. When you drive to Lubbock, you feel like you're making history. There is a lot of open space and driver's driver's like open spaces to relax, look around, and listen to good music and talk. A drive to Lubbock makes you think about the frontier forts of the 1800's and the westward expansion of the United States.
Colleges are like military bases. They are their own cities and mostly alike. It doesn't matter what city they're in for the most part because most activities will be alike for the most part. The only thing that I will say that really varies between the colleges is the weather and some places are better than others. Within Texas, A&M and Tech both have weather advantages over the other. I'd take Tech in the summer and A&M in the winter. Tech during the day and A&M at night. I'd also take Tech in the morning and evening. I like the lower humidity of West Texas and they get just enough rain to grow stuff, but not too much to be a pain. I'd take the Tech and A&M campuses over Texas. My dad isn't a Tech guy, but he was looking at a picture of the campus on the internet one day and he told me that they had a beautiful campus and I agree. The funny thing about all the talk about how green stuff is goes back to self-effort. The stuff that looks the greenest got that way by being watered. It has little to do with natural rainfall. You can create green in the desert if you water it!:D
Football players aren't exactly the brightest and I do scratch my head at why A&M gets better players than Tech. A&M will always get players because the numbers say so, but I do wonder why they get better players (At least going into college.)

Geeze, I'd like to think that every student athlete would still make education a major priority when picking schools. Considering that aTm is one of only 2 public Tier 1 Universities in Texas, of course kids wanna go there.

I drive to Houston all the time, at least once a month, and it has taken me longer than 100 minutes to hit loop 610 only once. And that was because of an accident in Cypress. I don't know what the hell you're smoking. Traffic flow could be better in BCS but even so you're never farther than 10 minutes from highway 6 and freeway speeds.

i think he's talking about the business end for NFL prospects. i understand why your standard 3-2 star athlete would choose aggy over tcehlahoma if they have a major in medicine in mind, but for someone like 'tellus (HOLLA!), i would think a place like tech where he would have been utilized more as a TE would make more sense to me.

Good point. Martellus got drafted in the 2nd round as a junior. Who are those Texas Tech tight ends playing in the NFL?

exactly. no competition for 'tellus to take over that that offense. i'm not saying it was dumb of him not to go to tceh, i'm just saying i can see the point of view of playing for a team who "does more with less".

Tech's medical school is just fine. The education piece wouldn't factor in unless it was animal science:D.

College Station doesn't have drug dealers. That is a fact.

Lubbock isn't green?
http://techimpressions.net/082/tuition/images/schwartz_campus_000.jpg
Im from just outside of Dallas and I prefer Lubbock to College Station.
For a few years, Lubbock had been getting some more than normal amounts of rain. The Canyon Lakes area had lush grass and looked peaceful. The rains for the most part were not severe and were just right. Hell, I wish the weather was like that every year.
Now, it seems were in another drought, damn it. Someone said it was cold during the wintertime. It hadn't been these past two years. More often than not, the Winter temps were averaging 60 degrees during the day. It was good to play a pick-up game of football during that time. Oddly, it snowed more in Spring this year than Winter (don't even bother to figure this out--only in the South Plains/Panhandle :D ).
During May and early June we had some rough dust storms. What made it more shi:Censor:y was that those days were over 100 degrees. That totally sucked. It was odd because the dust storms rarely occur during the extreme summer heat.
So...what does this all mean?
The damn weather in Lubbock is unpredictable. However, it is actually quite nice most of the time. (The football games when Tech hosted UT had the best weather you could ask for in November.) Just when it's not...it's really sh:Censor:y and it's bad weather days stand out more than most cities.

What I would like to see a little more of is the neat Vintage Township that is being built on 114th Street and Quaker. For some reason it reminds me of the older part of Round Rock. I like that part of Round Rock with the older wooden homes.
