so are the dragons national champs again because in the usa today they had moved to #3 at one point. just wondering if anyone knows for sure. there is no reason they shouldnt be #1 i mean they never lost from last year.

these politically correct nat'l championships give me tiredhead. who really cares what some eggheaded publishing group out of nyc, or whereever , believes will sell the most advertising. it is much less accurate and meaningful than the bscs rankings. make it go away, please. the state title is infinitely more meaningful.

yeah it's fun in the same sort of way as seeing the slc homecoming queen win a drawing naming her the best-looking hcq in the nation. fun, but meaningless.

Out of the six national high school polls (or computer power rankings) that I am aware of, SLC is #1 in all but one.

Poll:.....Calpreps.....iHigh........PrepNation...S tudentSports...TonyBianco...USAToday
Rank:........1............1...................1... ..............1................1...............2

the polls are always a joke. when we beat #3 Longview in 1997 we were unranked and then jumped to 7th

I wouldnt expect Southlake Carroll to get the national championship again. Not because they dont deserve it, but because it would show too much favoritism towards Texas to crown a champion twice in a two year span. I think they would rather give the championship to someone out of equity rather than give it to the Dragons again and anger 49 other states. Make sense?

Right now all of the big polls have us at #1 except USA Today who still thinks that we beat Plano LAST WEEK.... Pssssh....

Also, they say in their State Game article that Katy beat us 15-14 in 03.

Not that the polls mean anything (I don't think they do), but I would say that as far as Polls go, we are #1, simply because Texas is hands-down the top football state PERIOD. I guess that makes Katy, Trinity, Lufkin, Westlake, Plano, or Judson #2 nationally, huh? :D

Is this still hapenning ? I was sooo irritated when they dropped that banner on the SLC sidelines about national champs - Ridiculous - They should have been celebrating the State Championship which is real and tangible instead of focusing on the harry potter like national thing. I felt it was disrespectful to the state title. I too wish this national talk would go away. Irresponsible and silly.

Why let it bother you? Just sit back and laugh at the thought that it's ridiculous to argue over it all.

The kids thinks it neat to be recognized nationally as do many other people. I don't see what the big deal is. Let the kids enjoy the attention. I guarantee you they still know they're the state champs and have great appreciation of it.

national title talk around town has been relatively quiet compared to last year. i was shocked myself when we held up the banner, but i just went a long with it. i think people are starting to value the state title more, because they are catching on that it's some you can actually prove

They call it "mythical" for a reason.
Do you really want a championship with that word in it?

Would you still want it if they called it the Pretend National Champions?
Because that is basically what it is.

it's exciting initially because you are having your school recognized by people around the country. it wears off pretty quickly though.

The national title rankings have been around for a long time. It is nothing new. I am 100% sure that not one high school coach has one of the season's objectives "win the national title ranking". High school Football is all about winning the state championship. The national title is just the frosting on the cake and adds another honor to a very successful season; for whoever wins the national title ranking. Like it or dislike it - the national title ranking is here to stay - it cannot be uninvented.

It's just as much of a joke as the NCAA MNC. That's what they(and I until a playoff system arrives) call it in college too.

So Wide, you would rather not have a mythical national championship than have one? Believe it or not, but a national poll champion helps town moral and property values. I would rather be the champion, than not, but I am not going to lose sleep over it if Carroll was not champion.

I have to agree with you about leaving it off the rings. The publicity that it brings to Southlake though is great, except for it fosters a hate from many of our neighbors especially Keller

I think we deserve the "national championship" if only because we were #1 last year and did not ever lose. There's no way to determine if Lakeland is better, so the reigning champion deserves it. I don't think it holds much water besides bragging rights, but those are some good bragging rights to have!

It is all mythical but in my homer opinion Texas plays the best hs football so "usually" the #1 team in Texas is the #1 team in the nation in my mind. I really do think SLC would beat any team in the nation. But then again, I do not see all the other team's across the land.

I think the California powerhouses could give some of the Texas teams a run for their money. De La Salle, Matre Dei, Santa Margarita, Mission Viejo are all very good schools.

The difference, though, is that their competition isn't as good. It's much harder to go undefeated in Texas than it is in California. Apples to apples, the top teams are comparable. But comparing football as a whole between Texas and California, Texas will always come out on top.

I'd love to see an SLC game against Mission Viejo that someone else mentioned.

Also in regards to the National Champs, when I say my old high school Southlake Carroll is the national champion, many of the people here in Cali who follow football know what I am talking about! If Southlake were let's say 10th, probably not that many people outside of Texas would have heard of the school. It gives Southlake a national name, which is great because the kids deserve it and the high school is excellent both athletically and academically. Great recognition.

Springdale deserved it. They are splitting into two highschools and didn't have a close game all year(ex: Grapevine). It was their last chance and they had a very special season. I had the pleasure of watching them play and they would have been able to compete with Carrol no sweat. Damian Williams can do everything and obviously Mustain is a once-in-a-lifetime qb. Averaged a stomping of 36 points per game. Every time they got it to 35 they put ALL their backups in on offense and they continued to score. They really were an amazing team. They however, did not play the same level of competition that southlake did, but they were so dominant that it is hard to dismiss them.

I would vote SLC the National Champs as well, and that's from a Katy fan...

Question? Of all the top teams (in the nation who would claim a national title) how do they compare to SLC in wins and in state titles? Who would be their competition?

No matter how you look at it or what one thinks about SLC, they are a very good program with the record to back it up... I'm just not familiar with the teams from other states...

I know they do not have the competition that Texas HSFB does, but Charlotte Independence has won 92 in a row (current longest win streak & second all time to CA de Lasalle - 151). They have won the North Carolina state championship for 6 consecutive years in the largest division in the state. They have sent quality players to D1 like Chris Leake at UF. I noticed some of the scores in their games this year were a little closer than years past but they still keep putting up Ws in the Win column.

Here comes my Texas Homerism, but who do they play in NC. The standard of opponents is nowhere near to what you find in Texas. Even then, California, Florida, Ohio, and Pennsylvania are much better HSFB states than NC

I think I started my post by making that very same point.... but no matter the circumstances to win 93 in a row I feel pretty confident there were a few good teams along the way. NC has had some good teams but I agree with you the State would not produce as many nor would it be as consistently good year to year as TX, CA, FL, OH, & PA.

I guess that's my question as well... Is it more like Texas 5A's playing 3A's or do you just have a few schools that are that much better than the others...

Also do you think other States take football as serious as Texas? Or are there just a few dynasty's who seem to attract the better players and there are not that many kids who play in the first place?

I just don't know much about football in other states...

Thought some of you might think this is funny. I overheard some players from the 04 Dragons eating with some 05 guys. The 05 guys were talking about blowing people out and some of the teams they faced and talked about being named "national champions" like the 04 bunch. One of the 04 guys quit chewing and told them, "it's one thing to be named national champs in some polls, it's another to be unanimous". At that point the whole table started laughing.
