1. The 2005 version of the Dragons is the best team EVER in Southlake. (I've been saying that since week 5). They played as tough of schedule (or tougher) than any previous team but the scoring and yardage stats are the best yet.
2. The 2005 Dragons improved more than any Dragon team from week 0 to week 16. They made huge progress this year.
3. McElroy is a better passer than Chase Daniel or Chase Wasson. He passed for more TDs this year even though he was platooned for all 10 regular season games.
4. We've been saying all year that Tre Newton was a great back. He was young and inexperienced (and it showed during the season) but we knew how good he would become. His performance in the play-offs proved how good he is. Aaron Luna could not have done what Tre Newton did today.

tre had an awesome game, but aaron couldve done what tre did. in fact, he has done what tre did today. put up great numbers and come through in the clutch.

I was at the game and listened to the radio. The announcers said the 2005 SLC team had surpassed the Madison (Houston?) team for the most points in 5A history. That was Vince Young's team.
I also heard SLC had over 5000 yards passing and over 3000 yards rushing for the season. That is a pretty good split for the passing and running. It probably would have been even closer if Newton had not missed a few games.

I said even before the season started that this SLC team would be better than last and would probably be the best team SLC has had while in 5A. I kept repeating that sentiment throughout the year and now I know that I was right all along.

Luna was a fantastic high school running back. Great blocker. Good speed. Good power.
Newton is faster. He has better moves. A better pure runner. A much better potential Division 1 prospect. Newton is more explosive.
Luna was great and I cheered him for 3 years. Newton, however, will be a better running back. Newton broke several long runs today and had almost 200 years rushing. Luna could not have done that in this game. That's how I see it.

#1 way to kill Katy....
Shotgun- trap handoffs to the RB and draws. SLC and CF?(could be wrong about that one) were the only two teams to do it against Katy and both teams that used that offense were very successful with it.
Not saying this is how you beat Katy every year so don't take it the wrong way, but it killed Katy in the playoffs this year.

Tre will naturally improve and become a better RB as he gains experience. His size is good, but if he can add 10-20 pounds and keep his speed and agility, he will be one of the top RB recruits in the state, if not the nation.
I expect Tre to have some huge seasons at SLC, not just because of natural progression, but in large part because of who his QB will be. I think Riley Dodge with his running ability and athleticism will open some huge things up for Tre because defenses wont be able to key in on just Trey. Tre will benefit from Riley's presence the same way Courtney Lewis and Cedric Benson benefited from playing alongside Vince Young. I expect some big things out of Tre over the next couple of years.

will all the doofi who have been degrading tre newton please step up and explain his weaknesses and why he really isn't all that much. i especially want anyone to expound on his lack of ability to break tackles and how he doesn't get any yards after the first hit. i'm putting him at the top of the recruiting lists for the class of 07 footballers.

I don't think we'll be able to get rid of all of them. Some have too many posts to make me think they'll go away.
I know this is where some smart aleck wants to come along and say they haven't gotten rid of me yet!:D

I know Tre had some injury problems this year. I believe they were concussions. If that is the case, continued problems could slow him down. Maybe, as he gets older, his head will get harder.:D I know it has for my son.

I believe as the year went on, Tre developed from being a gifted athlete, to a developing running back and finally emerged as a gifted runner..he learned how to deliver the majority of the hits, rather than being the recipient....

I think a lot of the opinions of non Southlake Fans regarding Tre Newton are symptomatic of the mistake that just about all fans from all SLC's opponents (and non-opponents) have made all season and that is underrating the capabilities of the 2005 SLC team. How many times, no matter who the up-coming opponents were to be, did we see comments :-
“Tre Newton will not be able to run against ‘x’ (insert defender or team).
SLC wide outs will not have the space against ‘x’ (insert defender or team).
SLC has not faced hard hitting defenders like ‘x’ (insert defender or team).
‘x’ (insert defender or team) defenders will be in Greg McElroy’s face all game and force the interceptions.
SLC defense will not be able to stop ‘x’ running back, (insert player name or team.).
‘x’ (insert team name), will run the ball and eat the clock.
I agree with posters who have said that the 2005 Dragons have got better and better as the season wore on and with the route to the 2005 State Championship – this is the best of the four SLC 5A teams.

1. I still don't think the teams that they played were as tough as last year's opponents. I know the records were better but I do believe the teams were not as good.
2. The defense is the best that has been around here in a while
3. No arguements here
4. I would tap the breaks on him being better than Luna when comparing them as sophomores. I have said before and will continue to say, they are two different backs that are asked to do two different things. There are several plays this year that were either never called or seldom called with the combo of newton and mcelroy. For example, the tunnel play and the play where the qb puts it to the back and then reads whether to pull it or keep it was non-existant this year. Luna's soph year he played on a team that had 3 -1,000 yard receivers and a qb that had over a 1,000 many of the qb's yards came at the expense of luna carries. Tre will find this out next year with Riley at the helm. Tre will also, if you believe that we will not have as many great receivers anymore, be asked to stay at home and block more much like Luna had to do his junior year.

and one of the great things about tuna and tre both, is they'll do exactly what is asked of them, and never complain. tre learned a lot watching aaron play and conduct himself towards his teammates. he made it a point to go out and congratulate the ol after every extra point, just like tuna. if i had to bet, i doubt tre is a mouthy after big plays as tuna could be. not trash talking in a negative sense, but definitely not tight-lipped either. since i've never heard tre say a word, i've got to believe he's probably not saying much on the field either.

Tre impressed me more yesterday than earlier games. He has great moves, like Demitri Nance at Trinity. Everyone knows the offense is great. SLC's defensive line and Katy's penalties in earlier games is why I eventually picked SLC by 14. They stepped it up several times in the red zone. Also agree with how the team improved throughout the year.
I look forward to seeing Texas Tech and TCU in a few years.

This is'nt the thread for it, but it appeared to me that Dalton threw the ball a little bit flat, and that enabled the defenders to get their arms up and deflect several...how tall is he?

I'm still waiting for Nate from Argyle to chime in. He was always bagging on Tre(He always goes down on the first hit)
And wait till SLC plays a smashmouth team. They only play vs. spread teams. How are they going to react to when they git hit in the mouth. Well each time SLC was punched in the ol melon, they countered with a stronger punch. We are so spoiled in Dragon Land. This run has been incredible.
