Coach Dodge seemed mighty serious in winning - almost seemed a little weary or sad to me. You get the feeling he may have been thinking about alot during that final minute. Will he do some serious talking to Rice? Time will tell - stay tuned.

There was a small article in the Dallas Morning News about this issue a few weeks ago. Dodge said some colleges had contacted him about asst. coaching positions. He said he wasn't interested, however, he said Rice Univ. had not contacted him about a head coaching position, but if they do, he said he would be willing to listen.

Hey congrats Drgnbkr!! I looked for you today - but didn't see you - too much green. Great game for the Dragons. I'm sure all will work out just fine for the Dragons and Dodge and family - whichever way it goes.

Yes - watched the entire game on tv in Lufkin - too much catching up to do - plus a wet drive there kept me home - I sure hope to do it again next year.

I think Dodge went to Texas, not sure though. Can anyone confirm? I don't know much about Rice, not even sure what conference thier in. I know Rice has a good baseball program.

No, he went to Texas. Why be interested? Because it's a D1-A head coaching job. Even if he only turns them into a respectable program, that will turn a lot of heads and possibly allow him to make the jump to a program that has the potential to be a contender. The pay raise wouldn't be too bad either.

That said, I still think it's more likely than not that he returns.

Dodge takes the Rice job. Does he move in the Katy district bringing Riley with him to throw to Fuda next year:eek:

Riley and Katy? Katy's offense wouldn't allow Riley to play to his strengths. Riley is the quintessential spread QB. On the other hand, Katy's the best team in Houston, so that certainly makes them attractive.

One of the people we were sitting with at the game goes to school with Dodge's youngest. It sounds like Rice is a strong possibility. I am hoping he stays at Carroll until Riley graduates (2 years unless we can talk a teacher into flunking him;) ). We were discussing possible replacements if/when Dodge were to leave. Wasson at Fossil Ridge was the choice of the table. If that were to happen, SLC's last two coaches would have come from there. Of course, Wasson was at SLC before he took the FR job.

I wasn't aware that Dodge has another son. What grade is he in?

If we lose Dodge, not only will we lose a great coach, but also a great QB. Riley is going to be something. I hope we have another good one on the horizon.

Wasson and Florence would seem like the most likely candidates to replace Dodge. I can't imagine that we would hire anyone that doesn't run the spread.

I disagree with all of this speculation about Dodge at Rice because:

If you think about it, Rice could be the end of advancement for his career. He would have a very hard time bringing any semblance of SLC’s success to Rice. It wouldn't be his fault, most good coaches look bad at Rice. Currently they don't have the facilities, the fan base, or the money commitment to attract the best players.

Even if they committed to laying out the money to update Rice Stadium, the athletic dorms, the workout facilities, lowered their admittance standards, and got a great coach, they'll never have more than 15-20 thousand fans at a game, at least not fans supporting THEM... Today's best players, even those that can meet Rice's academic requirements, are looking for much more than what Rice can ever offer from a football standpoint.

This is the chicken and the egg argument, but SLC wins because they get the best offensive players AND they have a good coach whose system gets the most out of them. From what I understand, they had FIVE receivers that will be playing D1 college football and apparently they have QB prospects lined up in at every grade level. Taking nothing from Dodge, a lot of high school coaches in the state would have similar results with a stable of thoroughbreds like SLC has.

The ONLY advantage for Dodge might be the money factor. Certainly he could make 5 times what he makes now. I hope he's patient because it seems he has the mind to coach at higher levels... Just think him going to Rice is a longshot because one thing I noticed is he doesn’t make too many bad calls…

Since you can't respect that I might have an opinion different than yours without personally attacking, do you think Todd Dodge would say he's the only great coach in Texas? Do you think he'd say SLC's success is a result of his abilities alone?

Dodge and Duhon played for Port Arthur Jefferson in 1979 and 1980. In 1980 they made it to the state finals using a pass first offense rarely seen at any level at the time.

If my memory serves me, they were undefeated going into the final and took a 19-0 lead on Odessa Permian only to see Permian storm back and beat them by a couple TDs...

The two players continued from there to Texas, and both had good college careers.

If you go back & look at your post, you'll notice that your the one taking shots..implying that a lot of coaches could have done what he's done, with the talent...this is the same coach who has been begging recruiters to look at his "undersized, slow" players...it is because of him & the teams' continued success, that recruiters are finally taking notice of the Carroll players, not in spite of him...

Only really seen SLC once this year (on TV) but it looked like he had a fantastic QB, loads of size on the line, and 4 or 5 fantastic receivers... Also, I had read somewhere that SLC's winning ways started in the late 80's, long before Coach Dodge took over... That's how I concluded they're getting good players.

But you picked one line and took exception when that line was only there to make a point, which was: If Dodge coaches at Rice he won't have near the relative talent he gets now at SLC... Don't you agree with that?

Carroll has been winning for a long time, & the common thread for most of those years was that the other team usually had better talent, "we're just going to have to outcoach, and outhustle the other guys" That was the mantra...this year, we definately will have more D-1 commits than ever...and I say again, it's as much a product of Coach Dodges work for the kids as anything else.

rice and dodge would be a fairly rare situation whereby winning 6-7 games a year would be considered successful. his strengths include great organizational skills, extremely bright and dedicated staff, and very strong family values and christian ethics within his one of a kind motivational skills. he would automatically attract lots of kids who want to be playing in an offensive scheme that has been on tv as much as many colleges over the last 4 years. there are quite a few recruits who would consider transferring their allegiance, imo. rice's substandard facilities would be over shadowed by the phenomenally respected degrees afforded to rice graduates.

i personally would love it if he could take over my alma mater, but i really don't see it happening.

I'm still not sure he could get the players though... Ken Hatfield brought a heck of a resume to Rice and had/has all the attributes you mention... Even so, he succumbed to the constant swim upstream at Rice and in the end it tarnished that resume.

Since one in a thousand college players have a chance to earn a living as a pro, you're right that a Rice education should be a great recruiting tool, but it just doesn't seem to work out that way...

Again, I'm not doubting Dodge's ability... Just don't think Rice cares enough about football to give any coach a fighting chance...

good points, but disagree a little...hatfield is a great, great man and in my opinion a heck of a coach. But, he came in after a long feud with frank broyles and a fresh firing at the hands of clemson. rice was a rebound job for a fifty something coach. Dodge, on the other hand is at his peak...again 2 6 win seasons will catapult him into a national spotlight oc position or better!

two 6 win seasons will catapult him into a national spotlight oc position or better!Completely agree, just not sure its possible. First, the players AT Rice currently, including the QBs, are players recruited to run an option style system... So, I'm assuming it would take a few fresh recruiting classes to even have the skill people he wants to run his system... Secondly, Rice currently schedules non-conference games like Texas and UCLA for the money so they have little chance of winning non-conference games and their conference, Conference USA, is coming on strong...

Several of the teams, like Central Florida (brand new stadium coming, Hawaii Bowl), Marshall, Tulsa, and even Houston are committed as a school community to building a winning tradition. Will Dodge get such a commitment from Rice? Who knows, but he'll need it to even get 6 wins... We'll see...

htownfootball

that's interesting. He'd do well at Rice, they have some athletes. the basketball program has been on the rise; too bad they never made the tournament.
But I bet his son Riley would want to win another state championship father-son style. come on wheres the ridiculously good spread in Houston? Lufkin is hours north of houston on 59 so thats out of the picture. Katy won't expose Riley the way SLC would due to the offense. Riley COULD go to Elsik or North Shore and throw to those BIG tight ends and fast as heck wide outs but, us from houston, know that those aren't in the best areas.
The best situation for the Dodges would be that Riley plays, wins another one, and graduates from Carrol HS because, honeslty, there is no spread formation in the greater houston area that is so great like SLC that would expose Riley Dodge as the QB he WILL become in north texas.

how about the woodlands? seems like they threw the ball quite a lot. and kt had some pretty salty numbers this year. if coach dodge is at rice, i don't think there's going to be much of an issue with colleges for riley. noteriety won't be much of a problem.

htownfootball
12-22-2005, 07:39 PM
katy had "salty numbers" in the passing game because of Andy Dalton and the loss of Aston I guess forced them to feel compfortable throwing the ball since there wasn't another Aston there to convert on 3rd and long nearly everytime. But Andy Dalton is off to Dallas for TCU where his career ended on an off note (I know he got the TD but I felt bad when the game was ended on a sack, I mean come on now) at Texas Stadium.
Katy had it's year where they uncharacteristically put up SLC-esque passing numbers but next year I'm betting it'll be back to Katy Tiger football, run run run score.
Katy Times showed that the 3 previous state champ winning QB's from Katy didnt have crazy passing numbers but still got it down in clutch situations (bomb to Moooooooouton to upset SLC), etc.
Good luck Katy, let's see if your QB can't throw for over 1500 cause he can throw for 800 and it won't matter cause Dean is going to run all over Region III. oh and did I mention Fuda is back?

That being said...

I hate to say it(currently they are in our district), but TWHS would be a great fit for Dodge's son. Great passing game program in an outstanding community. The commute wouldn't be all that bad either. However, I wonder how College Park HS will effect TWHS's talent pool in 2 years?

Getting quality players won't be a problem for Dodge. Think about it. I'm sure all the fine folks in Southlake would love for their sons to get a free education at Rice. Southlake could be a feeder school for Rice with both of them running the same system. From 7th grade through college in the same system! How could he go wrong?

If Dodge is considering an offer, Rice would be stupid not to pursue him. A great Texas high school coach. Recruiting the state of Texas would be easy for him because he has the inside scoop on all of the talent and it would allow Texas athletes to stay in Texas if they thought there was a chance to win. Not only that, if they have half a brain, they wopuld consider the upside of having that coupon hanging on their wall from Rice.

it would be a win-win situation for rice. they could be getting the hottest coaching commodity around, and one who could jumpstart a pretty lackluster program. and they wouldn't have to pony up huge dollars besides. the players he'd be recruiting have all witnessed several tv episodes of the xbox game known as the slc offense. lots of skill players might want to get in on it.

In efforts to repect Wides Wishes, i suppose i will post this here, it has a little bit to do with the rest of the thread...

FT. Worth Star on 12/22 published the 2005 Texas Sports "IT List".. Number 7, above Bill Parcells, Drew Bledsoe, austin resident Lance ARmstrong, and others was TODD DODGE... I thought it was impressive, If he is such a hit, then do you think that he will really leave SLC?

The LIst

1. Mack Brown
The Texas coach changed, eschewing pressure and listening to rapper 50 Cent on his iPod. He'd be listening to critics calling for his head instead if not for that teeny-tiny fact of having the Longhorns one victory away from their first national championship since 1970. Life is, indeed, Rose-y for Brown.

2. Jon Daniels

Daniels became the youngest general manager in Rangers history. Owner Tom Hicks tapped this kid genius to do for Texas what Theo Epstein did for Boston. For starters, we'll settle for him getting a little pitching.

3. Troy Aikman

Aikman is going to the Hall of Fame. It wasn't too long ago that fans were whining that he needed to retire. They are crying now, all right, looking for his replacement. Meanwhile, Aikman is doing just fine, thank you, with his job as a lead analyst on Fox, his all-but-guaranteed induction into the Hall of Fame and his dip into NASCAR with Roger Staubach.

4. Vince Young

Young finished second in the Heisman Trophy voting behind USC's Reggie Bush. UT's insistence that the quarterback is in greater demand than Drew Bledsoe might be self-important but, if he wins Texas a national championship, it will be accurate.

5. Jerry Jones

There's buzz afoot to name Jones the NFL Executive of the Year. The Cowboys' off-season was one of the best in the NFL. The only thing possibly holding him back is if coach Bill Parcells cannot get his talent into the playoffs. Who would have thought that sentence would ever be written?

6. Avery Johnson

Johnson has the Mavericks playing defense. If the Mavs' new coach can do this, is it crazy to think that he might just be able to help them win an NBA title some day?

7. Todd Dodge

Dodge has a real-life Friday Night Lights happening in Southlake. How does a high school coach make an "It" list in a professional market? He wins three state championships for Carroll in four years.

8. Bill Parcells

Parcells is the most hated and/or loved man in Texas, depending on Sunday's score. What other local sports personality has every single word he says broadcast by two radio stations? And while Parcells -- like his team -- seems to be trending down, he remains very much a hot topic.

9. Drew Bledsoe

Bledsoe has returned luster to the position of Cowboys quarterback. Seen by some as an afterthought during the team's flurry of off-season signings, Bledsoe has helped deliver them back to the cusp of the playoffs.

10. Michael Young

Young is better than A-Rod. The Rangers' shortstop beat him and all other comers to the American League batting title.

11. Lance Armstrong

Not only does Armstrong win the Tour de France, but he got the girl. Riding off into the sunset after seven consecutive Tour titles is sweeter when rocker Sheryl Crow is waiting.

12. Dirk Nowitzki

Nowitzki is the last man standing of the Big 3. He has handled being thrust into a leadership role with aplomb and success.

13. Gary Patterson

Patterson was one SMU victory away from having TCU become this college football season's Utah. If fans were unsure of his worthiness as Dennis Franchione's successor, beating Oklahoma, going undefeated in a new conference -- you get the idea -- did the trick.

14. Mike Modano

Modano learned how much Stars fans appreciate him. When management was talking about not signing the longtime Star, fans let them hear their displeasure by burying the Stars' front office with e-mails, letters and phone calls.

15. Tony Parker

Parker is a key cog in the Spurs' dynasty. Tim Duncan is a bigger reason for their success, but he is not dating Eva Longoria, a less than desperate housewife.

I still don't see this happening, but if it does then it's in the next couple of weeks.

Dodge would almost certainly want in on the end of the recruiting season... The clock is ticking.

I can see the mental struggle, coaching in college is a big deal, real big. But I think at this point it is clear to see that it is a family affair. I think that the ol' family first will keep him at carroll, mistake or not.

The Dodge-Newton era will begin in 2006, bringing with it a set of new faces and challenges for the Dragons.

"I've been waiting for this for a long time," Dodge said. "We'll probably start working when we get back from Christmas break."

Does this sound like a guy who is leaving? No. He would've have given anybody that quote if he was talking to ANYBODY about another job.

I think it'd be absolutely shocking if he took a job anywhere in the net 24 months.

Not if it's in the Dodge house. He was refering to Riley and himself.

A dad and son can watch videos together and play catch, right? ;)

Seriously, though, it's no different than any other dad working on football skills with his son.

yeah who's to say that Riley and Coach Dodge want to just play some catch in the backyard. And maybe Riley wants to invite over some 'friends' just play catch with them. But since the backyard is too small, they go play in the indoor. sounds like a good plan...

track is a good way to build up speed and endurance, both of which are helpful.

You should have become a distance man--they don't need a lot of speed, just a lot of work ethic.

Judging by the context of the article, I'm pretty sure that comment was from Riley, not Todd.

Imagine your salary times 5; what would you do? If it's offered, he's gone!

However, what price can you put on the 'once in lifetime opportunity to coach your own son for 2 years in high school'. The college jobs will still be on offer in 2 years time, but now (2006 & 2007) are the only years where Todd will have the chance to coach his own son at high school. I would guess that this is something he (Todd and I guess Riley) has been looking forward to for many many years.

Coach Dodge seemed mighty serious in winning - almost seemed a little weary or sad to me. You get the feeling he may have been thinking about alot during that final minute. Will he do some serious talking to Rice? Time will tell - stay tuned.

I don't see anything that would indicate they are interested in Dodge....see article below regarding possible candidates from a San Diego newspaper...

USD football coach Jim Harbaugh has had discussions with Rice University officials about the school's vacant head coaching position, sources said.

The Houston school finished 1-10 this season and is looking for a replacement for Ken Hatfield, who resigned Nov. 30.

Harbaugh's agent, Jack Bechta, declined comment yesterday. Harbaugh did not immediately return a phone call seeking comment.

USD Athletic Director Ky Snyder said "the university treats this as a personnel matter, and as such, I can't comment."

Rice officials could not be reached for comment last night.

Other possible candidates for the job are Texas Tech co-offensive coordinator Sonny Dykes and Texas A&M offensive coordinator Les Koenning.

My opinion is that Rice would not seriously consider any high school coach. I think everone learned from the Gerry Faust debacle at Notre Dame years ago.

yeah, i'm not hearing the same things. the know nothings on the rice forums aren't thinking rice would lower themselves to taking a hs coach. in reality, dodge would be taking a media hit to take rice. he has more nation-wide tv time in the last 4 years than rice has.

Any chance SL will bump up the $? Even if Rice doesn't interview him, others at different levels will be interested. SL would be wise to try to keep him.

Over the last two years he was given pretty substantial raises to make it his salary pretty close to what all other 5A coaches in the metroplex are paid.

With what he has done (63-1) they need to do more than just having him at other HS coaches level. He has basically cranked out pure magic.

dragonsdaddy

he is not in the top 1/4 of area hs coaching salaries. doesn't seem right, but that's the way it is. he has some supplemental incomes(camps, speeches, breakfast club meetings) that probably brings him up close to the top.
