Wow. What a reversal of fortune. Guess College Station is looking a bit better to him, huh?

It shows he found lightning in a bottle those years in College Station.
If you go to Kentucky and can't win....you ain't no good...period.

He'll pocket close to $8-10M for two years of trouble, but, yeah, he'd have had the Ags knocking on two more sweet 16 doors.

Billy Clyde is a damn good coach and only given two years does not seem like enough. It probably stung a little to see Tubby take Minnesota to the Dance this year as well as Louisville and the Blue Grass Savoir Rick Pitinio get the overall number 1 seed.
I keep hearing that former Wildcat Travis Ford will probably be the next coach. I cant see Barnes or Jay Wright leaving whwere they're at for the mess that is Kentucky right now. I do wonder though if Donovan will take a stronger look at UK this time now that UF has missed the last two tourneys.

The stock broker could be interested. Florida's taken a complete nosedive after the champs left.
The VCU coach, who was in line to replace him before he changed his mind on Orlando, would be the frontrunner to take his place at Florida.

:notworthy Perfect way to sum up Billy D. I had never thought of it that way but so true.
If UK does not get somebody like Billy D or possibly even Ford then whoever takes that job will always have to live in Pitinos shadow to those fans. Even Billy D and Ford will have high expectations but they may be given a bit more leeway. It just seems like 2 years for 1 coach and another who had won a National Title and had afew more elite 8 and sweet 16 apperances being shown the door may be a black eye to some. BUt then again it is UK. Not too many programs can match their pedigree.

This isn't the Oakland Raiders. You need to give a coach more than two seasons to get his own players and build up the program. If you can get it done at A&M then you can get it done at Kentucky.

I'm sure he knew they had a quick trigger finger at Kentucky before he took the job. 10M guaranteed was at the very least a calculated risk. He won't be singing for his supper any time soon.

Question is now, how soon does he want to get back into coaching. Does he take a year off and spend his time like farmer on the weekends and get hamemred or does he get right back into coaching?
Would he go to Tech?
UGA?
UVa?
If UK hires Donovan which I am reading is going to happen, would UF and Jeremy Foley take a chance on BG? He did have two 20 win seasons at UK which isnt much these days but his resume from stops at UTEP and A&M should outweigh that as would his time as an assistant under Self at Tulsa and Illinois. He is worth the money, just give the man time.

Nah....he had an NBA quality player on the team and a nice support group....over-rated, methinks.

If he left a perfect situation at College Station, I doubt he'd go to Lubbock under any circumstance. If the Gainesville job opens up for him, I believe he would seriously consider it. It has enough of the glamor ingredient he looks for.

I just really can't see UF and UK doing a straight up coach swap. I see the fans in Gainesville shrieking over that deal. I think he is either out for a year or so, possibly an assistant somewhere.
He is a good coach. Perhaps he is not elite level, but he is a quality coach that will make a team into a consistent winner and consistent tourney team. It's my understanding that his ......well....personality "quirks" played a huge role in this decision. A different personality would have earned another year with the same record, even at UK.

Apropos of the news and this thread, Ben Morris' The Ballad of Billy Clyde, which gets airplay in B/CS.
The Ballad of Billy Clyde
You leave to live under a shadow
Of a legacy 'twas built before your time
Had you stayed you'd be engraved upon a statue
But the bandit runs who's plotting out a crime
Tell me
Chorus:
Billy Clyde
What will you do?
Billy Clyde
When you find out you're mistaken
For the chances you've been taken
If your grass gets really blue- be satisfied
(It ain't green like you thought)
You're smiling like it is your birthday
But your devilish grin, well, it really says it all
Your loyalty is smaller than your stomach
But you'll Mark the day when you hear your momma call (Billy…)
Won't let you back in
Chorus
(Eat it up boy!) Solo
Bridge:
When every bridge that you cross could burn down, down, down (it could)
When every smile that you help make will turn around…UPSIDE DOWN!
With your wanderlust, your pride, your pure ambition
Don't you know they'll always fade into regret
When you always leave the ones who truly love you…
You'll find there is no one to love you yet…so…tell me
Billy Clyde
What will you do?
Billy Clyde
When you find out you're mistaken
For all the chances that you've been taken
And your own heart is a-breakin'
Your resolve visibly shaken
And the money you've been makin'
Might as well be forsaken
'Cause the grass was way too blue upon that side?...
Well the grass ain't blue in Texas, Billy Clyde.

UK lacked a good point guard and overall guard play, the depth was not quite there for him either. What he did at UTEP and A&M more than solidifies his position as a very good coach. I dont know how you can say he is overrated based on his resume both as an assistant and as a HC.

Taking a team from 0-fer in conference to the Sweet Sixteen in three seasons is an accomplishment, no matter what your roster. Acie Law was awesome and so was JJ, but BCGs efforts to make them into scrappy ball hawks and play together as a team was great coaching. He should get a gig somewhere else, but his personality needs some work.

Acie law IV was BCG's VY.
Don't want a guy that thinks he's too good for a school( what he did to A&M) to be at Tech any way.

BCG executed a similar turnaround without Acie at UTEP. After Acie left, the guy that took over A&M inherited a roster that kept A&M in the top half of the Big XII and took a #1 seed to the wire in the second round of the NCAA.
A player like Acie is obviously going to do special things, just like VY made it possible for MB and Co to do something really special. But even without those special players, MB and BCG didn't/don't put crap out on the field/court. What's more, with them you have a chance to lure the next special guy to play for you.
Your point about Billy Clyde's attidute and ambition is very relevant, however.
